'Love Notes' Newsletter #56 - Happy New Year 2008

"Love Notes" Newsletter #56 - Happy New Year 2008!

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I want to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! We are starting this year without the major medical problems we encountered last year. We pray God's very best for your families and your ministries in the coming year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we enter into this New Year, we suggest that it is time to raise the bar in your ministry activities at the nursing homes. During the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, many friends, relatives, and volunteer groups make special visits and presentations. Now that the holiday activity has ceased, it is now more important than ever to come along side the residents and be their "Faithful Friends". You will find some Christian New Years Resources at Annie's New Year Page.

Valentines Day, February 14, 2008, is an ideal time to show the residents how much both you and God love them. Visit our Valentines Day Page.

There you will find several examples of Devotionals and Cards that can be printed and handed out, as well as links to other useful websites. Make sure to read your group "The Father's Love Letter."

Since early next Month is Super Bowl XLII, try this Devotional on God's Super Bowl at your next meeting. Print some extra copies to hand out during your presentation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to highlight some ministries and resources we have located.

- Larry Stevens Nursing Home Music Ministry - This ambitious ministry travels across the country bringing joy and salvation to the residents through music.

- The Sharing Org by John & Megan Rock - This multi facility ministry provides weekly interdenominational services to 10 facilities each week and includes Adult Foster Care facilities.

- A new book by Missy Buchanan called "Living With Purpose in a Worn Out Body" should be of interest to our residents, their caregivers, and those in ministry. Missy also writes articles about the elderly in the United Methodist Reporter. Some interesting examples are at:

Her book will be released in spring and you may order a reduced cost pre-publication copy at:

- An online devotional by Dave Alter that has short devotionals indexed by subject, many of which might be useful in your ministry.

"Love Notes" Newsletter #57- February 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I are so thankful for all your thoughts and prayers. We have just been appointed Co-Chairmen for the NC Kairos Torch Prison Ministry which involves incarcerated juveniles 25 years and younger. Since this is just starting up in NC, we are asking for prayers of discernment, encouragement, and support. We were very involved with this ministry when we were in Florida. We are thankful to Eric Watson at NBC-17 TV in Raleigh for airing this interview over the weekend.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We also want to express gratitude to the following people and organizations for their generosity over the past year.

1. Bill Goodrich at God Cares Ministry for a generous donation of books and money.

2. Diana McMahan of Musical Medicine for the Soul for a large donation of Musical Medicine Tapes.

3. Terry Lessig for a donation of multiple copies of the Audio Book My First 100 Years.

4. Audrey Altman of WRMB Moody Radio in Boynton Beach, FL for several radio interviews about nursing home ministry.

5. George Carden of UNI News for several nursing home ministry interviews.

6. Mark Shadduck of Contegra, Inc for a donation of "multiple copies of Luther" DVDs.

7. We want to thank everyone who has purchased materials from our Online Bookstore. We have set up another bookstore that has listings for out of print books like the Seniors Devotional Bible and for the Song for Grandmother Video.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we begin the Lenten Season and approach Palm Sunday and then Easter Sunday, we would like to encourage you to use this special time to focus the attention of the residents on the Cross of Jesus Christ.

Our Easter Season Web Page has information and resources for Lent, Palm Sunday, and Easter Sunday.

The residents will certainly appreciate a service with elements of the rich Christian Tradition in which they were raised. Consider bringing in a large wooden cross and giving out fresh palm items on Palm Sunday.

This is an appropriate time to consider using a Christian Hymn as the basis of a short Easter Sermon. Check out our Special Web Page to help you in this regard. You may want to consider using the hymn "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross".

We suggest that you utilize the book The Final Week of Jesus by Max Lucado in your program. It is available at:

"Love Notes" Newsletter #58- Happy Easter 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I are so thankful for all your thoughts and prayers. Please continue to pray for our involvement in the Kairos Torch Ministry and that many of senior friends will find salvation during this Easter Season.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We again want to emphasize using this special time to focus on the salvation that comes from Christ alone. We have updated our Easter Season Web Page which has information and resources for Lent, Palm Sunday, and Easter Sunday.

We just added two Good Friday Handouts that were supplied by Tom McCormick. You can print them out at:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to highlight Our Favorite Evangelistic Resources, many of which can be printed and handed out during one of your services.

Our all time favorite is "I Stand at the Door and Knock."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is an appropriate time to consider using a Christian Hymn as the basis of a short Easter Sermon. Check out our Special Web Page to help you in this regard. You may want to consider using the hymn "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross".

Review this Devotion on the Hymn "And Could it be."

Take a look at this Devotional on "The Old Rugged Cross."

We suggest that you utilize the book The Final Week of Jesus by Max Lucado in your program. It is available at:

"Love Notes" Newsletter #59 - April 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I are so thankful for all of you. It is because of your prayers that the Lord continues to bless us and lead us to opportunities to serve Him. Please continue to pray for our involvement in the Torch Juvenile Prison Ministry. The start-up of a ministry involving government agencies is a slow and tedious process and we ask that you pray for patience and diligence for the volunteers involved. Also, please continue to pray for a family member who needs a fresh touch from the Lord.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

National Nursing Home Week will be celebrated this year on May 11-17, 2008. This is a great time to start planning some activities during this period. Please visit our Special Web Page that has a link to the official web site for this holiday.

You will find many suggestions and links to help celebrate this special time both with the residents and in your community. This would be a great time to promote your ministry by sending a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to your local media. Please feel free to use the sample from our web page. Also, you may download the PSA as a Word File at:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to recommend a web site that presents a different Hymn each week, including the words, music, and history. These can be used as a semonette for your regular meetings. This week's Hymn was "My Jesus I Love Thee", which is one of our favorites.

We have also highlighted this idea on our Hymn Based Sermonette Page.

You can download a large print handout for this Hymn at:

"Love Notes" Newsletter #60 - Happy Memorial Day 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, we would like to wish you all a Happy and Solemn Memorial Day. We have a special prayer request for our family. We need prayer for our 32 year old twin sons, Adam & Matt. Over the years they have had some problems with the muscles in their hands and recently Matt's problems have extended to his legs and feet. Matt went to a neurologist several weeks ago and they diagnosed him with a form of Muscular Dystrophy. They said that he could probably work for another 5-10 years. Adam is having similar problems but not as severe at present. The good news is that Duke has a clinic that focuses on MD and provides free care along with their research. Please pray for God's healing and care for them both. Also, the Kairos Torch Ministry has been given the go ahead in NC and we meet with the Chaplain at a local juvenile facility next Tuesday.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memorial Day is celebrated this year on May 26. We would like to share our Memorial Day Page which has some Online Resources that may be helpful in a Memorial Day Presentation

At most facilities we have visited, there are usually a few residents who have served in the Armed Forces. Also, there are many of us who have lost friends and family in the active duty of serving our country. This is a great time to remember how we obtained the freedom to worship our Lord today and to pray for those brave souls who are still protecting that right. Bring small flags for the residents and tap into their huge reserve of prayer power.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Father's Day is celebrated the third Sunday in June each year. We would like to share some Online Resources on our Father's Day Page that may be helpful in a presentation.

At most facilities we have visited, we have not found there to be a large number of fathers. Because of this, we suggest that you review the Text Version of a Father's Love Letter and use all or part of it in your presentation. It is a love letter from your heavenly Father and should have a powerful effect on the residents.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We have been reviewing a new devotional written especially for residents of nursing homes. "Living With Purpose in a Worn Out Body", by Missy Buchanan is now available at our Amazon Bookstore.

We believe that this book should be of interest to both nursing home residents and those who minister to them. Missy also writes articles about the elderly in the United Methodist Reporter. Some interesting examples are at:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure to enter our June Drawing for resources on the Home Page of our Website. We will be including the Seniors Devotional Bible and Missy's Book. As a special incentive for our "Love Notes" subscribers, we will be including an excellent and inspirational DVD entitled "Luther".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to share on our favorite Evangelistic Handouts.

It is located on our Favorite Downloads Page.

"Love Notes" Newsletter #61 - Happy July 4th!

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I have been in our new ranch home for about a year and are so thankful for your prayers during our transition. We love our new home and have made many new friends in our neighborhood. Many of our neighbors are our age or better and several have physical problems. Please pray that we might be a light for Christ in our new surroundings. Also, please continue to pray for our twins sons with their medical situation. We are making progress with the Kairos Torch Prison Ministry, but summer is a tough time to get contracts signed. Please pray for the Kairos Torch Training here in Raleigh next weekend.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Fourth of July is a great time to celebrate our country, our heritage, and our freedom. We would like to share some Online Resources that may be helpful in a presentation.

At most facilities we have visited, there are usually a few residents who have served in the Armed Forces. Bring small flags for the residents, play and sing lots of patriotic songs, and use their huge reserve of prayer power to pray for our nation. You may find some additional resources on our September 11 Tribute Page.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some Patriotic Holiday Program ideas from one of our web site visitors.

* This was very easy for Memorial Day. or could be used for any patriotic time. allows you to create and print out military i.d. tags on paper. I chose this text: Remember Jesus Christ Raised from the dead 2 Timothy 2:8, and a second tag with Jesus Christ Savior of the World.

I laminated the tags, cut them out and put them on split rings (i didn't have ball chain, which would have been better) I like to have a small token with every lesson for the residents to take back to their rooms.

The Bible lesson used Psalm 103 (forget not his benefits) so we had two scripture references for remembrance. We remembered our war dead, thanked God for the vets who were present, and talked about the greatest soldier to ever walk the face of the earth. The one who vanquished the foe once and for all.

I did not have any appropriate music - so i found some great songs on itunes (which i am new at --- how fun!!) Over There, Tie a Yellow Ribbon, White Cliffs of Dover. The residents enjoyed that, and I was glad to have such an easy source!

* Since I am a lady, I like to play a cassette recording of a man reading the scripture. I personally love to hear a man reading the Word, and think the residents like it too. I used an old KJV cassette Bible, but I think i should invest in a CD bible.

* We have our church service in the dining room, starting with music while the people are finishing up their Sunday noon meal. (We used to go at 2 pm, but found many of the folks napping.) It works very well in the dining room, as we sometimes capture the attention of the staff and any visitors. We capture many more -- about 90 percent of the residents, and they are feeling content and comfortable.

I am so very thankful the Lord is blossoming a love in my heart for this outreach in our town. It is so precious to worship with these folks. I find the ideas for sermons and tokens and songs come very easily. I have struggled over the years to find my place in the church.... and planning lessons and meetings for kids, adults, teens has always been a challenge. But when I am thinking about what to say to the elderly, it is just so easy and quick. I must give God all the credit. You all are a part of what is happening in my ministry life.

Please take a look at this short video. It might make a powerful activity for your group visit at the nursing home.

Take a moment to consider what your sign would read!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We would like to remind you of a new web page for an active and well thought out nursing home ministry in Oregon by Christine Leasure. Christine has done a great job of sharing useful information about her ministry and we feel it will be an asset to both those getting started and seasoned ministers alike.

The Sunday following Labor Day has been designated National Grandparents Day. This year it is celebrated on September 7, 2008. We want to lift up and honor all grandparents, but especially those who are confined in Healthcare Facilities. They need our love, compassion, and time. Take time today to go out of your way to wish a dear elderly person a hearty "Happy Grandparents Day!". It may just make their day, and yours also! This Holiday is a great time to promote your nursing home ministry and to celebrate the wonderful grandparents at the facilities you visit.

Please visit our special National Grandparents Day Web Page.

"Love Notes" Newsletter #63 - September 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners,

We are so grateful to all of you for your support, prayers, and friendship. We have just finished our second training meeting for the first Kairos Torch in NC, which will occur on Oct. 24-26 at the CA Dillon Youth Development Center in Butner. We are blessed to be sharing this ministry with 25 other team members and 21 residents at the institution.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This year we were again blessed to be interviewed on radio during National Grandparents Day. George Carden of UNI News interviewed us over the phone. He then sends selected portions of the interview to a large number of Christian Radio Stations.

The Akers Family were our August 2008 Drawing Winners. Their ministry to the elderly is as follows:

"Most of our nursing home ministry is through the music programs that our children take to the residents. So far we have provided entertainment for eight different nursing homes and retirement facilities. Locally, our daughter also does manicures for the ladies. We read to the residents, mostly personal mail, and occasionally write letters for them. We sometimes have opportunity to help with their Sunday worship services, and are always looking for new ideas. We also help elderly people who are still in their own homes with such things as yard work, household repairs, and transportation. Your website is a great resource for us. The one thing we find challenging is getting other people involved in nursing home ministry. The more we do, the more unmet needs we see. "

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We had a request for resources that could be used in a drama presentation at a nursing home and suggested these sites:

- The Interview with God

- The Lord's Prayer with Drama, best done with two people

- A short sermon by Rev. SM Lockridge. You can hear what it sounded like at:

- This one takes about 3 min and is really powerful

- A powerful devotional with a prop and some drama

- This one is good for all audiences even us!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In our search for special occasion days in September / October we found these web sites, which may be of some use in planning your presentations.

- Healthcare Recognition Dates

Also, the first week in October is National Letter Writing Week.

This would be a great time to write some personal letters to the residents at the facilities you visit. We have some printable cards on our web site that also could be used. You can locate them by Holiday on our Seasonal Page:

"Love Notes" Newsletter #64 - Oct 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I would like to wish you all a very Happy Fall Season. Please continue to pray for our 33 year old twin boys who are in the initial stages of Muscular Dystrophy. We have just finished the training for the first Kairos Torch in NC, which will occur on Oct. 24-26 at the CA Dillon Youth Development Center in Butner. We are blessed to be sharing this ministry with 25 other team members and 20 young men under 16 years old at the institution. We have provided a printable Prayer Chain Sheet for the retreat at:

We make a chain of individual links signed by those praying for the weekend. Then we drape it around the chapel to show the boys that they are being bathed in prayer by people they have never met. If possible, please print the sheets out on colored paper and mail to Larrry & Sandy Wasserman at 4610 Ivy Blossom Lane, Raleigh, NC 27604. If you feel led by the Lord to make a tax-deductible donation toward the weekend, please make the check out to North Carolina Kairos Torch and include with the prayer chain. Thanks in advance for all your thoughts, prayers, and support.

We have received some materials from Richard & Diana Walters of Chattanooga, TN. They have a ministry to Nursing Home Residents with Dementia and are developing some evangelistic resources, which we believe to be the only one of their kind. They present the Plan of Salvation in a multi-sensory booklet. Their ministry web site is at:

We have looked over the prototypes of their materials and were very impressed with them. They are interested in getting these materials into the hands of people who could evaluate them or try them out in their ministry.

You can browse one of these online at:

"Love Notes" Newsletter #66- Merry Christmas 2008

Dear Friends and Ministry Partners, Sandy and I want to wish you the most blessed and Merry Christmas ever. Our lives have been blessed and enriched by all of you. Your friendship and prayers are really appreciated. Please continue to pray for Adam & Matt as they face the challenge of dealing with progressing Muscular Dystrophy. Also, please pray for healing for the adult daughter of friends from Florida, Kristin, who has been battling AML, a form of Leukemia, since April of this year. Our 2008 Christmas Letter is available online for those of you that may be interested.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Christmas is a time of giving and showing God's love to others. What a better time to focus on our needy friends in the nursing home environment. At this time of year they are experiencing both loneliness and depression. We have a Special Christmas Page that will help you in planning your visits around the Christmas period. On this page we have compiled many suggestions, resources, and links. Check out the gift ideas and printable materials.

While it is true that many groups and entertainers make the rounds during the holidays, it is the simple things from people, who see them regularly and care for them individually, that mean the most to the residents. For many, we are the only family they have. Won't you consider to bring each one a small gift and a card, give them a hug or a kiss, and tell them that Jesus loves them and so do you!

You may want to printout the Christmas Card we are giving to the residents along with a small gift.

We have used the "Is Someone Smiling Devotional" in our scheduled visits to the nursing home. We would like to challenge you to try printing out extra copies of this inspiring message and giving them to those people you meet in your everyday travels between now and New Years. We have seen some amazing things happen when we did!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now is a great time to enter our December Monthly Drawing. As a special incentive to our "Love Notes" Subscribers, we are offering in addition to the award the multi-sensory materials from Alzheimer's Ministry.
