What is a Graphic Novel?

• A graphic novel is a story told through both pictures and words.

• It is not a comic book, but its format is like that of a comic book.

• It is not a genre, but a type that encompasses several genres; for example, mystery, adventure, romance.

• Some graphic “novels” are non-fiction.

• Unlike a comic book, a graphic novel has a plot with a beginning, a middle and an end.

• It will also contain character development, and very often strong thematic value.

• It can be an original work, but is sometimes taken from a pre-existing text.

• Graphic novels span all cultures and have international appeal.

Why bring Graphic Novels into your school library?

• A reluctant reader is a child for whom we haven’t found the right book.

• It is our mission to look at this format as an option for students who may find this type of book engaging.

• This is a format that is certainly gaining in popularity with children and young adults, so it must be appealing for

many.

• Last year over 100 million dollars worth of graphic novels were sold.

• It is a hot market for teen reading and continues to gain an audience of all ages.

(Information: Shelley Gaylard)

What do you have to watch out for?

• Your own bias! Many teacher-librarians are avid readers and consequently, don’t like the degree/styles of

illustration that appeal to the reluctant/disengaged reader.

• As with any literary work there is a wide spectrum of quality.

• The material is very contemporary and the content can be controversial: sex, nudity, violence, etc. .

• Teacher-librarians must choose carefully, knowing what is appropriate for their school population and

community.

• However, do not let the content of a few graphic novels close your mind to the benefits of the many that are

excellent tools for engaging reluctant readers.

• Many avid readers like these books as well.

How Can You Use Graphic Novels?

• To encourage pleasure and leisure reading for all students.

• As part of the research collection.

• As support for units of study, both fiction and non-fiction.

• As a wonderful resource for Visual Arts courses.

• As a way to profile the library’s support for literacy, differentiated instruction, and curriculum coverage.

Thank you to the following teacher-librarians for reviewing the graphic novels listed below:

An account of life during the Balkan conflict, and a behind-the-scenes look at the profession of war correspondents and their search for the truth. Mature Teen

Notes From A Defeatist 1560975105 $29.95

This early work by the famous award-winner author includes short satirical pieces, a lengthy chronicle of Sacco's days as roadie and resident cartoonist for a rock band touring Europe, and cynical reflections on his unhappy stint working in a public library. Other pieces presage his mature, politically oriented work: a history of aerial bombing that targets civilian populations, the story of his mother's harrowing childhood experiences during the World War II bombing of Crete, and a mordant and, unfortunately, once-again relevant account of his increasingly distraught state during the lead-up to the Gulf War. Zolok’s head can hypnotize people. And there’s a mad professor who guards the head. The professor, the floating skull and the Weezer all end up being the same person. And whenever she’s bored, she takes a stroll, which inevitably leads to a run in with Justine (a masked rival who is out to get her), witches, ghouls, zombies… but no matter how much danger she’s in, she always escapes unharmed. Peculia is very curious and seems oblivious to the dangers around her. And through all of her bizarre encounters, she walks around shoeless! Mature Teen

| |BROWN, CHESTER. | | | | |

| |This comic-strip biography recounts the life story of Louis Riel, the Metis leader whose battles with Ottawa ended with his execution in 1855. Although |

| |taking liberties with some of the events in the Riel saga, Brown’s work is thoroughly researched and any deviation from recorded history is carefully |

| |footnoted at the end. While he strives for historical accuracy, his characters are deliberately cartoonish. EXCELLENT |

| |SACCO, JOE. | | | | |

| |Joe Sacco has often been called the first comic book journalist. In this graphic memoir he presents images and impressions gathered in the early 1990s |

| |during months of research in the West Bank of the Gaza strip. He was interested in the plight of Palestinians who were living under occupation. His text |

| |and drawings cover a myriad of activities from the front lines about ordinary civilians trying to cope with their situation amidst shooting, tear gas, |

| |roadblocks, and confrontations with the military occupiers. In 1996, the Before Columbus Foundation awarded this book the seventeenth annual American Book |

| |Vladek, a Holocaust survivor. The graphic form compels readers to imagine what is not explicitly set down. Volume 1 begins in pre-war Poland, tracing |

| |Vladek’s marriage, his experiences in the Polish army, time spent by the couple in the ghetto and their attempted flight. Part 1 ends with their arrival at|

| |THOMPSON, CRAIG. | | | | |

| |This long graphic autobiography renders a passionate and moving account of Thompson’s upbringing in a religiously strict household by parents who viewed |

| |his love of drawing frivolous and dangerous. He and his younger brother are the objects of taunting from cruel classmates who mock them. He recounts the |

| |painful experiences of first love with a girl he met at a church camp who lifts him from his sense of being socially unfit and confused. His sense of loss |

| |when they are separated foreshadows his later loss of religious faith. Thompson’s vision of high-school romance is romanticized yet level headed. This is a|

| |deeply-moving story that contains some explicit nudity. EXCELLENT |

| |PEDRO AND ME |9UP |TP |18.36 |SSG010 ___ |

| |WINICK, JUDD. | | | | |

| |In this moving and dramatic graphic novel, Winick, a member of MTV’s The Real World, recounts his reactions and experiences living in a house with a |

| |roommate who is HIV positive. Through his words and powerful drawing, he tells first of his reservations and later his bonding and genuine compassion for a|

| |man who became an important part of his life. His friend Pedro became a devoted HIV educator shortly after being diagnosed, travelling across the nation to|

| |warn youth about the dangers of unsafe sex. Winick and his girlfriend were so inspired by his work that she took time off work to care for him while Winick|

| |ANDERSON, HO C. | | | | |

| |This is the long awaited second volume of the graphic biography of Martin Luther King Jr. by the comic artist Anderson. It begins when King wakes up in |

| |hospital after being stabbed by a deranged woman. The book explores the intense divisions within the budding Civil Rights movement, capturing the emotional|

| |stains this put on the struggle for equal rights. Some of the great moments of the movement, such as the 1963 march on Birmingham and King’s famous speech |

| |at the Lincoln Memorial are covered, accompanied by intense visual illustrations. Anderson includes supposed reservations by JFK and others in the black |

| |community about King, as well as King’s personal failings, especially allegations of womanizing and domestic conflicts with his wife. RECOMMENDED |

| |KING: VOLUME 3 |11UP |TP |17.15 |SSG012 ___ |

| |ANDERSON, HO C. | | | | |

| |The conclusion of Anderson’s three-volume graphic biography begins with the assassination of President Kennedy and then switches to Chicago where the |

| |non-violent civil rights protest philosophy of King is being challenged by the rise of the militant Black Power movement. Ending with King’s own |

| |assassination, the book explores how far America is from achieving the goals to which King so passionately devoted himself, and the Civil Rights movement. |

| |As with the other two books in the series, Anderson intersperses researched history and King’s own words with speculation about what might have been done |
