TI-82/83 Graphing Inequalities

Example

Graph the inequality y 2x 7 using the shade function.

STEP 1: To graph an inequality, first enter the

STEP 2: The calculator cannot draw dashed lines. It

equation as an equality. Press Y= and enter y

2x 7 as Y1. Press

to see the screen.

can only draw solid lines. Press the shading command.

STEP 3: Shade from the bottom of the screen by

pressing

1 4 to enter Ymin. Shade to Y1 by

pressing

[Y-VARS] 1 1 (TI-83:

1 1). Press

to see the graph.

STEP 4: (TI-82 only) To use a lighter shade, first

erase the old shading by pressing [DRAW] 1.

Then press [QUIT] [ENTRY]

.

TI-82: Shade( ( [DRAW] 7) uses three inputs:

minimum function, maximum function, and shading

level. Enter the inputs in order. Separate them by

commas ( ).

From the bottom of the screen: Select Ymin by

pressing

1 4. Enter the inequality and the level

of shading. The level of shading can vary from 1

(darkest) to 8 (lightest).

From the top of the screen: Enter the inequality.

Select Ymax by pressing

1 5. Finally, enter the

level of shading.

TI-83: Graphs can be shaded from the function

screen. Additional shadings will be drawn at one of

four different angles.

From the bottom of the screen: Enter the

inequality on the home screen. Press Y=

to move the cursor to the graph type. Press

3 times.

From the top of the screen: Enter the inequality

on the home screen. Press Y=

and

twice.

EXAMPLES: ? To shade y 2x 3 (as Y1), use Shade(Y1,Ymax,1). ? To shade y 0.8x 1 (as Y1) and y 2x (as Y2), use Shade(Y1, Y2,1).
