Course Description
This course begins a demonstration and examination of various concepts of basic algebra. It assists in building skills for performing specific mathematical operations and problem solving. These concepts and skills serve as a foundation for subsequent quantitative business coursework. Applications to real-world problems are emphasized throughout the course. Specific applications to disciplines such as statistics, accounting, finance, and economics are demonstrated and discussed. A variety of other applications, such as geometry, personal finance, science, and engineering are also presented. This course is the first half of the college algebra sequence, which is completed in MATH 209: College Mathematics II. Math is a language of logical thinking
using symbols and numbers to quantify.

| | | | |
| |Using the readings in Ch. 1, identify and explain at least one real-world application of | | |
| |mathematical concepts covered in the text, for one of the following areas: business, health | | |
| |and wellness, science, sports, and environmental sustainability. Do you think it is easier to| | |
| |relate this concept to one of these areas over any other? Explain why. | | |
| | | | |
| |What is the difference between prime numbers and composite numbers? How are prime numbers and| | |
| |composite numbers related? Prime numbers are often used in cryptography. Why do you think | | |
| |prime numbers would be more useful for the creation of codes than composite numbers? | | |
| | | | |
| |What are the differences among an algebraic expression, an equation, and a formula? Under | | |
| |what circumstances would you use each of these? Why do you think these are sometimes | | |
| |confused? | | |
| | | | |
| |What is the multiplicative inverse or reciprocal? Why is it useful to know what a reciprocal | | |
| |is? How might you explain it to a child who does not yet understand multiplication? | | |
| | | | |
| |Why is it important to follow the order of operations? What are some of the possible outcomes| | |
| |when order of operations is ignored? If you were to invent a new notation where order of | | |
| |operations was made clear, what would you do to make it clear? | | |
| | | | |
| |Explain the main differences among integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and irrational | | |
