CURRENT RESEARCH
"From Crops to Craps and Beyond: Casino Gaming and Community Development in Tunica County, Mississippi." [Field study of the rise and decline of a planter county "addicted" to casino tax revenues.] I have finished my field research, begun in the fall, 1996, with my only Professional Development Assignment, studying the changes in the county and the town accompanying the evolution of the casino gaming industry which opened in October, 1992. My field research covers an 18 year period during which Tunica County became debt free, experienced a rapid growth in prosperity and investments in projects designed to enhance and support increased gaming revenues, and subsequently returned to indebtedness as a result of the financial crisis in the first decade of the 21st century, the Mississippi River flood of 2011, and the growth and expansion of competing gaming jurisdictions in 23 states, seeking the same revenue source as an alternative to increasing taxes. As time permits, I plan to write either a monograph or an extended essay or perhaps a book manuscript with the title above.
