Summative Assessment Task: Exploring the Person Behind the Name

Places all over Canada are named after historical figures. Some believe that these people did great service to our nation. However, others

question honouring some historical figures because of those individuals’ actions or attitudes toward groups of people.

One example of a controversial historical figure is Bishop Vital-Justin Grandin. He founded a number of towns, churches, hospitals and

residential schools in Alberta and Manitoba during the late nineteenth century. When a mural honouring Bishop Grandin was installed at a

transit station in Edmonton, some people questioned whether an individual who established many residential schools, which negatively impacted

thousands of First Nations people, should be honoured in this way.

This example brings forward an important question for Canadians: Should we revisit history and question honouring controversial historical

figures based on our current understanding?

You have decided to prepare a speech that will be delivered at a citizens’ forum on this issue.

In order to prepare your speech, you need to do the following:

Describe multiple perspectives

Using Bishop Grandin as an example (or an individual of your own choice), describe the multiple perspectives surrounding this historical

figure.

– Why would some people agree with honouring this controversial historical figure?

Why would some people oppose honouring this controversial historical figure?

Identify opportunities and challenges to promoting national unity

Explain how an issue such as this:

provides an opportunity to promote national unity

provides a challenge to promoting national unity.

State and support a position

Consider whether Canadians should revisit honouring controversial historical figures based on our current understandings by:

stating your position on the issue

providing specific reasons and examples (evidence) to support that position.

You may choose to deliver your speech to a live audience or post it on a blog. Share the perspectives, opportunities and challenges, as well

as your support for your position, in a manner that will engage the audience.
