Charles was the eldest son and second eldest of 8

siblings.

His father struggled with debt and in 1824 was

sent to Marshalsea Debtors¡¯ Prison in Southwark

(southside of London). The prison was an

informal prison where families often lived right

alongside the incarcerated father. This was true of

Dickens¡¯ family, except Charles found lodging

with a friend and visited the prison on Sundays

only.

Charles, then 12, went to work at a blacking

factory gluing labels on bottles. Although he

worked for less than a year, this time in his life had

a lasting impact on him. He HATED the factory.
