Family Tree

|Procedure 1: |Introduce the topic of family by explaining that learning about our family is a great way to better understand |

| |ourselves.  Family stories are a wonderful way to better understand our differences as well as our |

| |similarities.  Patricia Polacco is a writer and illustrator who has learned about herself and her family |

| |through listening to others and then writing and drawing pictures related to those stories.  Tell the class |

| |that today they will learn about Patricia's family and then learn more about their own relatives.  Show the "A |

| |Video Interview with Patricia Polacco" video (see Resource section). |

|Procedure 2: |After listening to the Patricia Polacco interview, ask the students to think about their own family culture.  |

| |Ask them: |

| |Do your family members look the same? |

| |Do your family members think and talk the same? |

| |Do your family members have different jobs? |

| |Do they have different levels of education?  |

| |Do your relatives like to play different games? |

| |Do they like to eat different foods? |

| |How are your family members different from you? |

| |How are they the same as you? |

|Procedure 3: |Look at the Family Tree template. Give an example of how to fill it out. Every student will do a family tree.|

| |Challenge students to be as creative as they want, using pictures they have at home. |

|Procedure 4: |Share with classmates at a later date. |
