Title: 4-H Youth Development Professional – Community Central program

Reports to: Associate Professor, 4-H Youth Development, Cumberland County

Purpose. This position will provide educational leadership for 4-H Youth Development in the greater Portland area. 4-H is a non-formal, experiential education program for youth, and adults working with those youth, to develop life skills necessary to be self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. A priority will be to strengthen 4-H clubs for teens in the Greater Portland area in partnership with organizations including Portland Housing Authority, local schools, non-profits, and other community based groups.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate and manage the 4-H Community Central education program for Cooperative Extension in Greater Portland, taking advantage of the concentration of businesses, non-profits and transportation options found in the urban setting.

• Manage teen clubs in conjunction with Educator, community partners, and volunteers. Teen clubs include Portland 4-H, Deering 4-H, and four short term workforce 4-H clubs for teens (Social Justice, STEM, Teaching, and Food Science). Includes service learning, teambuilding, Aspirations Trip, Summer of Science, applying for scholarships, applying for 4-H award trips, and applying for 4-H@UMaine. Also includes reporting, fund management, and marketing.

• Provide STEM learning activities for Front Street Study Center twice per week in conjunction with Portland Housing Authority. Also includes reporting, fund management, and marketing.

• Seek creative ways to reach under-served and under-represented youth while ensuring compliance with affirmative action, equal opportunity and civil rights guidelines.

• Support grant managers to secure external grants, funds and contracts for program expansion and sustainability.

• Develop and manage program funds to support educational programs in 4-H youth development.

• Enroll 4-H youth from CYFAR clubs in the 4honline data system as necessary.

• Share new educational materials used in programming with Extension colleagues across the state and nation.

• Use educational technology to enhance program expansion and reach new audiences.

• Refer clients to other Extension programs and/or other service providers as needed.

• Provide timely and accurate information in response to public requests.

• Develop and sustain a professional development plan in support of one's Plan of Work.

• Participate in UMaine Extension Cumberland County staff and Extension Association (twice a year) meetings as a member of the county staff as appropriate.

• Develop and maintain professional relationships that reflect courtesy, civility, honesty, purposeful work and mutual respect.

• Connect with other CYFAR funded positions on a monthly basis to assure that project outcomes are being achieved.

• Build productive relationships with internal and external constituencies.

• Commit to organizational improvement by identifying opportunities to improve and recommending possible alternatives for a situation.

• Utilize coaching and mentoring methods that provide an environment that is anticipatory, supportive, and encourages constructive feedback on performance.

• Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

• Manage teen clubs in conjunction with Educator, community partners, and volunteers. Teen clubs include Portland 4-H, Deering 4-H, and four short term workforce 4-H clubs for teens (Social Justice, STEM, Teaching, and Food Science). Also includes reporting, fund management, and marketing. (70% of time)

• Provide STEM learning activities for Front Street Study Center twice per week in conjunction with Portland Housing Authority. Also includes reporting, fund management, and marketing. (30%).

• Other reasonably related duties as assigned.

This position requires

• Bachelor's Degree or approximately three years of related work experience.

• Experience working with youth.

• Experience working with diverse audiences and supporting equal opportunity, affirmative action, and civil rights goals.

• Demonstrated skill in designing and delivering community-based educational programs with an emphasis on youth development.

• Demonstrated management and organizational skills.

• Demonstrated facilitation skills, which includes the ability to handle conflict.

• Demonstrated experience in prioritizing and managing logistics of events, conferences and programs.

• Collaborative work skills with other agencies and organizations.

• Demonstrated effective communication using oral, written and electronic methods. Demonstrated experience with computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

• Ability to travel both in and out-of-state, usually requiring a valid driver's license.

• Independent as well as teamwork skills; must be self-motivated and directed with the ability to achieve measurable results and manage multiple tasks in an autonomous work environment.

• Work schedule flexibility depending upon the needs of clients.

• Ability to occasionally lift 30 to 50 pounds.

This position prefers

• Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development, Education or related field.

• Fluency in one or more of following languages: French, Somali, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, Lingala, Swahili, or Kinyarwanda.

• Experience working with adults (volunteers, teachers, parents, community members, etc.)

• Experience with science, technology, engineering, and/or math education for youth.

• Demonstrated proficiency in developing, implementing and managing program funds.

• Grant writing experience.

• Community education/teaching experience.

• Successful supervisory experience.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Work Environment: The 4-H Youth Development Professional is expected to work out of the UMaine Extension Cumberland County office in Falmouth, Maine. A majority of time will be traveling to work with client groups and to achieve work goals.

Work Year: Full-time, fiscal year.

Work Schedule: Normal University of Maine Cooperative Extension office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Schedule adjustments, including some evening and occasional weekend work throughout the state, will be necessary to meet the needs of the program and its clients. This position requires hours spent in after-school programs.

 

Position Type: On-going, full-time, grant funded on annual basis.

Schedule for Evaluation: In the initial six months of employment then annually thereafter in accordance with UMPSA Agreement.

Salary Range: $37,000

All UMS employees are required to comply with applicable policies and procedures, as well as to complete applicable workplace related screenings, and required employee trainings, such as Information Security, Safety Training, Workplace Violence and Sexual Harassment.
