Modern History of Hawaii

The Greatest Person of Hawai’i Project

Through out the history of Hawai’i, there have been many Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians that contributed to the betterment of our society. This term, as a class, we will determine who the greatest person of Hawai’i is. Which individual made lives better for the people of Hawai’i, or possibly the world? Who helped inspire others to strive to reach their full potential? Who represented Hawai’i and the culture that we have. Who has had the biggest positive impact on our society? At the end of this project, we will see who is the greatest person of Hawai’i in all-time!!!

Some suggested people are mentioned below. The only Hawaiian that is off limits is Kamehameha the Great. Your group may come up with its own person from Hawai’i. First come, first serve. Once a group has decided on an individual, another group may not take that person. Groups are no more than three.

Princess Ka'iulani Don Ho Haunani K Trask

David Malo John Waihe’e Henry J. Kaiser

Larry Kimura William Richardson Queen Emma

Nainoa Thompson Daniel Akaka George Ariyoshi

George Helm BJ Penn Duke Kahanamoku

Jonah Kalaniana’ole Bernice Pauahi Bishop James Campbell

I. Argumentative Essay

Each person in the group will type an argumentative essay about why their individual is the greatest. I will choose one of them to grade. Please underline your thesis. Thesis and transitions will be graded along with the voice and tone of your paper. Your paper must make a convincing argument that your individual is the greatest. This is NOT a biography, every aspect of this paper needs to be convincing me that your person is the greatest of Hawai’i. The research paper must be typed, double spaced, using “1 inch margins, in Times New Roman font, 12pt size. The paper must be 3-4 pages in length. You must have a works cited page at the end of your paper, this does NOT count as being a part of your 3-4 page requirement.

II. Cultural Artifact

Your group will make a cultural artifact that best represents your selected person. Whether it be an ipu, ki’i or a model, your group will make an artifact that represents your individual. For example, if you chose Nainoa Thompson, you may want to make a mini-model of the Hokulei’a. It should be made naturally and if possible, make it as “Hawaiian” as possible. I will be looking at its relevance to your person (you must be able to explain in detail its relationship to your individual), creativity, as well as the effort put into its creation.

III. Persuasive Presentation

Your group will present a PowerPoint presentation to the class about your individual. It should have between 6-9 slides minimum. Please present pictures and reasons why they are the greatest on your slides. This is not a typical presentation, you must convince your classmates and I that your person is the greatest. Sell it. If you are not enthusiastic, reading the slides, or making an argument for your person, it will affect your grade. Everyone must be present and participate in the presentation. Words should be big enough for everyone to see. Must be persuasive, clear, and performative.

IV. The Musical (MTV Baby), making a music video

Now is your chance to make a music video. You will create a script and compose an original song and produce a choreographed and professional music video. The content should be an ode to your individual. It needs to be at least 3-5 minutes long. Every member needs to sing or be in the video itself. You may make the beat and the lyrics original or use an instrumental of a previously recorded song. The lyrics must pertain to your person and show what they have accomplished or why they are great (Think “Hawaiian Superman” by Braddah IZ).You will not be graded on your vocal skills, but rather your effort/willingness to put together a video and your lyrics. You may perform it in class if you wish. Good luck, have fun, and no Shame.

V. The Debate Tournament

By the end of the tournament, we will see who our class believes to be the greatest person of Hawai’i. First, you must make sure you find out as much information about your opponent’s person as possible to find the strengths and weaknesses of the other team’s argument. Then, of course, be sure to have plenty of arguments as to why your individual is greater than your opponent’s. One group will choose a designated debater and also choose one person from the opposing group to debate. The debates will happen like this:

a. First Speech: A three minute presentation for each side. (1min)

b. Second Speech: Trash-talking, slander, refute your opponent’s. Presentation. Come back with reasons why their individual is not as great as yours. Feel free to ridicule satire and be sarcastic. Your job is to persuade your peers and teacher. You will have very little time to prepare during the debate, so the advance research you did will be critical. (2min)

c. Cross-Examination: Both sides may ask each other questions during this three minute cross examination about their individual and why they think their person is better. (3min)

d. Summary: “Last Shot”. Wrap up your argument to back up your person and influence the audience one last time to vote your way. (1min)

Winners (as determined by the audience and the teacher) will move on to a second round of debate and then possibly a third. The winner will automatically receive the maximum points possible for this element of the project.
