Greek & Latin Root Words and Prefixes Name ________________________
Many of the English words we use are made up of Greek and Latin word parts. Each one has meaning, and when you put them in larger words, they can help to define the word. Vocabulary and spelling often become easier and more meaningful by studying word roots. Knowledge of Greek and Latin word parts increases your ability to determine meanings of unfamiliar words on standardized tests (SOL, SAT) as well.
Homework
Your assignment is to prepare a flashcard for each word part assigned. You should use card stock or index cards – please, no paper flashcards. On one side of the card, write the root. On the other side of the card, write the definition, two words that relate back to the word part’s meaning, and definitions for those words. Neatness matters – if I cannot read your writing, you will lose points. For example:

Guidelines for Successful Word Part Cards
1. The words you choose must show a relationship to the root’s meaning.
2. Show how the words YOU choose, relate to the word part’s definition.
3. For the word examples, you must use different word concepts (No same word, different ending! i.e. photograph, photographer, photography)
4. Do NOT choose bizarre, obscure words for the examples. Choose words that have a chance to be part of your everyday vocabulary.
5. The root can be anywhere in the word, not just the beginning.
6. Spelling counts! If you misspell any word parts on the card, you will lose points.
7. Feel free to add color, pictures, or symbols to your cards to aid in your practice.
8. Actually use the cards to quiz yourself. Repetition is ideal!
Quizzes & Tests
To prepare for each quiz, please practice using your flash cards and Quizlet (Landstown Clay Greek and Latin Group 1, 2, etc…). The quizzes will be in a variety of formats: fill in the chart, multiple choice, short answer, context clues, etc... Each time, you will be quizzed on the current list plus several additional word parts taken from previous groups. At the end of the unit, you will be expected to know all sixty-five root words and prefixes on a cumulative test.
Before each quiz, turn in your flash cards for homework credit – 10 points for each group. Please place them in a Ziploc bag with your name printed on the outside.
