The objective was to review and critique the current signage around the area in order to make recommendations on improving current signage and offering suggestions on any additional signage deemed necessary. The Chemainus signage audit was completed on March 11, 2011 by a team of Hospitality and Tourism Management students from Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. The members of the research team included Lara Malan, Amanda Annand, Lauren Fine and Cindy Ohlmann. Of the members in the research team two members had been to Chemainus in the past while the other two had not. This mix was beneficial for the task as it provided the opportunity to observe signage and navigate with people who did not know their way around, like incoming tourists would; yet having others familiar with the area helped to make sure the important sights, facilities and attractions in the town were all covered in the study.Based on the teams observations the main areas of concern that will be discussed are:Entrance points leading into Chemainus The traffic circle on Henry Road The Greyhound bus stop and train station Signage leading into Old Town from Chemainus RoadObservations and RecommendationsThe following section will discuss the observations and recommendations for Chemainus in regards to entrance signs, the traffic circle, Greyhound and train station and Old Town.Entrance Signs Picture A16: Just past intersection of Island Highway/Henry Road247650-3175Entrance into town from Chemainus Road had an appropriate amount of signage that was clearly visible. There was signage directing off the main highway onto Chemainus Road upon leaving Ladysmith and a welcome sign was located further down the road closer to town. The entrance from Henry Road had good signage along the highway and a large billboard at the main intersection before Henry Road to give advance notice on where to turn. The only area of concern was at the Island Highway/Henry Road intersection. While there was a Welcome to Chemainus sign (Picture A16), it was beyond the lights and hidden by trees which could cause travelers to miss it altogether or drive straight through toward the welcome sign. Recommendations:Have a Welcome sign closer to or on Henry Road that is clearly visible so travelers know they are turning onto the right road.Traffic CircleThe traffic circle when coming onto Henry Road from the highway does have signage but it is slightly hidden and is therefore possible to miss. The same direction sign is also on Chemainus Road leading into the traffic circle from town which is clearly visible and easy to read. 247650-1270The traffic circle area is also an ideal place for a welcome sign into Chemainus which could aid in directing travellers around the circle. A large structure is already in place to create an ideal place for signage (Picture A18).Picture A18: Wooden structure at traffic circleRecommendations:Trim back the trees around the current traffic circle direction sign so it is more visible to drivers. Display a large Welcome to Chemainus banner on the front section of the wooden structure at the traffic circle instead of the Chemainus Dollar banner. This is seen as beneficial as the dollar is already represented on the side of the structure. A welcome sign there would also lead travellers to the right exit of the traffic circle.Greyhound and Train Station24765052705Picture A21: Damaged Viarail sign by tracksChemainus has both a train and a bus stop though both are challenging to locate. There is not efficient signage for the bus and it’s possible to drive past without even knowing it’s there. The only sign seen for the train is damaged and is up by the tracks so not clearly visible from the road (Picture A21).Recommendations:Have a clear sign where the bus stops, currently there is nothing.Have a Viarail sign down by the main road instead of just on top of the hill by the tracks.Repair or replace the damaged rail sign.Old Town-9525130810Picture A20: Old Town sign in Waterwheel ParkThere is a large clear entrance sign (Picture A20) to Old Town in Waterwheel Park highlighting the shops, waterfront and murals. This sign is ideal for foot traffic as it is visible from the main parking lot and visitors can walk down through the park to Old Town. Upon reaching the bottom of the park there is no signage so people not familiar with the area might have difficulty knowing which direction to go. More signage is also needed on Chemainus Road for people wanting to drive to Old Town. Recommendations:Put a sign for Old Town at the Oak Street/Chemainus Road intersection as it is a great place to enter Old Town for people driving in from the North.Have a Old Town sign at the Victoria Street/Chemainus Road intersection for travellers coming in from the South.Direction signage is needed at the bottom of Waterwheel park to direct people to the shops, restaurants, beach and ferry. Additional RecommendationsRV Parking sign would be beneficial at Oak Street/Croft Street intersection in Old Town for travellers coming in on Oak Street from Chemainus Road.Signage needed directing to Chemainus Theatre. No current signs seen.Town map on beach needs street names for better reference.ConclusionThe signage audit in the town of Chemainus has yielded 12 recommendations that could work to help people navigate in and around Chemainus. Provided are recommendations for improvement of the current signage and other areas that could use additional attention. The implementation and determining top priorities will be left up to the community after observing the information provided.
