A person holding a private pilot license is allowed to be pilot-in-command of a single engine aircraft for recreational and or personal use in generally good or fair weather conditions. The pilot may transport passengers, however, not for compensation or hire. This rating will allow the holder, the privilege to fly in weather that normally would be prohibited for the non-instrument rated pilot. Since more often than not, a commercial pilot will be required to fly his or her aircraft on a fixed schedule, it is imperative that the skills necessary to operate in weather conditions that would otherwise be unfavorable for VFR (visual flight rules) be mastered before undertaking such a flight. It is a valuable and indispensable skill that is sometimes called the pilots “best insurance policy”. In practice, most instrument training flights are conducted under “simulated” conditions. This is achieved by using what is called a view-limiting device. A device worn by the trainee that restricts the pilot from seeing outside the aircraft for the purpose of simulating flying in the clouds and other possible visual impairment, due to the weather reducing the visibility in flight.ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS17 years or olderPolice ReportJCAA Medical Certificate Category 2Birth Certificate or PassportPrivate Pilot CertificateTwo passport size photographsC-172 SPTrainingHoursCost per hourTotalGround Instruction40US $ 40.00US $ 1,600.00Flight Instruction12US $300.00US $ 3,600.00Simulator30US $150.00US $ 4,500.00Renter’s InsuranceUS $ 360.00JCAA Written and Practical Flight TestUS $ 450.00TOTAL ESTIMATED COSTUS $10,510.00You must have logged 50 hours PIC X-Country time before you can sit the JCAA Instrument Check-Ride Proficiency Examination. Please note: Prices does not include those for other related expenditures.Multi-Engine Rating: The Multi-Engine Rating allows you the chance to finally fly what most people consider a real airplane.
