More on Brakes:

I recently received information regarding brake parts for early Hillmans. There is some good news here. I had long thought that brake shoes for 1948 through 1959 Minx and Husky were no longer available. Well that is not true. Part number 37-3713 which is the shoe set for an 8 inch motorcycle front drum for the Triumph motorcycle T120,TR6 and T150 series is an exact match. They are only sold in sets of two shoes, so you have to buy two sets to get four shoes for two wheels. They cost about $30-35 per set and should be available wherever you can get Triumph Motorcycle parts. Note that if you have a 1960 Series IIIA Special, it uses these shoes. Series IIIA DeLuxe models and later drum braked cars use a slightly larger brake shoe that is shared with the Triumph TR2 sports car's rear brakes (but not fronts).

Also, Jim Whithers in Australia has 6 new master cylinders for Phase II Minxes, his e-mail is jwclassicparts@.au. Price is $95 (Australian) plus shipping.

Batteries:

Fortunately, from the first Hillmans imported into the USA in 1948 through the last Plymouth Crcikets brought in as 1973 models (in late 1972), only four different batteries were used. The standard battery for the 1948 through the 1966 cars (the postivie ground ones) was the Group Size 24F battery. Note that the Group Size 24 has the same physical dimensions, but the battery terminals are reversed, so you may find if you use a Group Size 24, your battery cables won't be long enough.

You will notice, however, that there is plenty of room in the battery area. This is because the Group Size 27F battery was an option. This battery has roughly same height and depth dimensions as the Group Size 24 battery but is longer. It usually has a higher cold cranking amp rating. I am using a Sears Die Hard Gold in my 1969 Sunbeam Alpine GT because it is a hard cranking car and I figure it needs the 900 cold cranking amps! For a Hillman, unless the car stays outside in the winter, a battery with 400-500 cold cranking amps is more than sufficient.

Staring in 1967 Rootes cars went to an alternator and the car's polarity was reversed. These cars, which includes the last Sunbeam Minx, the Sunbeam Arrow and Plymouth Cricket used Group Size 24 batteries. Again optional were the Group Size 27 batteries.

All of these batteries are available whereever automobile batteries are sold; Sears, Walmart, Kmart, Napa, Auto Zone, etc.
