Summary and Reflection The United States has a two-party system, with two strong parties. Third, or minor parties, stand little chance of actually winning against either of the two key parties but they may, on occasion, impact the outcome of the election. This can happen when the third party candidate is close enough to the ideology of a major party to draw off a significant level of support for that party. In addition, ideological or single-issue parties may draw enough attention to key issues that the major parties must address them.
