Music Therapy Practicum I Spring 2007 MUTX 346

This class will meet 1:1 weekly in HFA 146. Confirm your 1:1 time with me by 10 a.m. on Thurs., Jan. 25th Lee Anna Rasar rasarla@uwec.edu HFA 146 836-4260

Please note that there are some differences in the structure of this course since last semester. All grading deadlines are firm, including Personal Professional Growth deadlines. Note that no make-up opportunities are allowed for Personal Professional Growth work and that your final grade in the course is affected in a positive manner by on-time completion of this work and in a negative manner if you get behind in this work. Do the math to note the effect of a 0 for any given week.

WEEK 1 Week of 1-22 - 1-26 - Clinical assignments are made.

To receive a grade of C or higher you must confirm your session time/s and day/s with Lee Anna in writing by Thurs., 1-25 at 10:00 a.m. If you are using the Music Therapy Clinic for your session, you need to double check with Lee Anna for availability of clinic PRIOR to confirming a time with your client to make sure that no one else has already booked that time. A common error is to simply book the clinic based on the times that you and your client are free. If you are actually able to contact your client and meet to complete the enrollment form and permission forms and/or if you are able to orient with a clinical supervisor at a clinical facility, you may do so this week instead of waiting until next week.

Give Lee Anna a copy of your complete schedule, including how to contact you if your client cancels (i.e., for each time slot – work phone number, practice room number). Remember to immediately update any schedule changes as the semester progresses.

Prior to 10 a.m. on Thurs., Jan. 25th, you need to confirm a weekly 1:1 time with Lee Anna that will be the same day and time weekly. During this 1:1 meeting time next week you will schedule 2 off-service meeting times for your final examination and make plans for any 1:1 meetings scheduled on Fri., April 6 and during any tours/field trips.

Update your status on the AMTA Professional Competencies. On the AMTA website they have not been updated since last semester, so you do not need to reprint a copy of them. However, you will need to print off new copies of the Standards of Clinical Practice and of the Code of Ethics. Go to to print these documents. Organize and file all papers from MUTX 345 in hard copy and place them in a folder.

Homework due at 1:1 next week:

* PPGP Parts 1 – 6 (All students may update weekly, 1 part at a time for Parts 1 - 6, as noted in this syllabus.) If your concert attendance is not up to date, you need to get up to date this semester. Include this in your PPG for grading.

* written review of notes from all your specific clinical assignments – include outline of goals/objectives and activities for your particular clinical assignee

* submission of your folder prepared and organized with materials for this course.

* written outline of session plan for assessment of your clinical assignee – will be graded based on meeting requirements in Standards of Clinical Practice and based on organization by corresponding assessment categories with 3 BACK-UP activities for each original plan activity in each category - submit either this week or next week during your 1:1 meeting, based on scheduling days of your 1:1 and your session

WEEK 2 Week of 1-29 - 2-2 – Conduct assessment session. You will need to maintain a record of data from your assessment session to include in data sheets once they are developed.

* PPGP – Parts 1 – 6 written – may update for next five weeks as noted in syllabus

** One song for PPG is due.

* Submission of AMTA Professional Competencies along with Personal Professional Growth Plan update is due to reflect your progress across the winter break.

* Completion of enrollment form, 4 consent forms, and billing statement (give only to Lee Anna – NEVER give to client or to guardian) OR facility handbook sheet and contract with practicum supervisor, as applicable

* During 1:1 give Lee Anna Asst. Plan with 3 back-up activities for each activity on your chosen plan, and, if needed, submit 5 forms and billing statement.

Schedule final exam times and reschedule any other meetings as needed.

Conduct initial contact meeting between therapist and client/significant other or facility/supervisor orientation.

This is your last week of sessions. All sessions must be made up by Fri., May 11 in order to receive a passing grade for this semester. Your final exam for this course is next week and consists of your off-service meeting. Note info below to prepare for that meeting.

All clinical work must have been completed by May 11 and all written work must be completed by your first 1:1 time for your final exam to receive a passing grade for this semester.

Week 16 – Final Exams – May 14 - 18

Final Exam – Your final exam will be held during two 1:1 meetings during Finals week.

Your final exam consists of your off-service meetings. If applicable, letter to client/guardian is included in responsibilities for off-service meeting with instructor.

Off-Service Responsibilities:

Bring 3 copies of Tx Eval, Data Sheets, and letter to client/guardian (if applicable) to your off-service meeting for all clinic clients. If you have facility clients, you will only need two copies.

Sign and date all data sheets.

If letter is applicable:

Bring address/es of client/s.

Bring 2 copies of letter on UW-EC Music Therapy letterhead or bring a less formal card with a note explaining that the Treatment Eval/D/C Summary/Home Program is enclosed.

You will need to sign and date all data sheets, and Lee Anna will need to co-sign them.

Drop/Withdrawal Deadlines:

Fri., Feb. 2 is the deadline to drop with no record as well as the deadline to change to/from S/U or Audit. Mon., April 9 is the withdrawal deadline.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance is expected at all therapy appointments and supervision appointments. For any approved absence, make-up work must be submitted to maintain the point scoring. Make-up work assignments will be created jointly by student and teacher. 5 points will be dropped from the final grade for any uncompleted make-up work. Make-up work is not permitted for unexcused absences, and 5 points will be dropped from the final grade for each unexcused absence.

Grading scale based on points:

A = 95-100 C+ = 77-79 D- = 60 – 63

A- = 90-94 C = 74-76 F = 0 – 59

B+ =87-89 C- = 70-73

B =84-86 D+ = 67-69

B- =60-83 D = 64-66

Final grade in course cannot be any higher than comprehensive grade for music skills across semester.

5 points will be subtracted from any 1 assignment for each question you ask about procedures when these procedures were previously described in MUTX 345 class lectures and/or reserve materials or syllabus.

GRADING - Any deadlines not met result in a score of 0.

Tx applications from concerts/recitals – Please note that you need to be up to date in your concert/recital attendance requirement for graduation. If you are up to date you will receive a grade of 100 for this category in your grading profile. If you are not up to date, include a plan to get up to date in your Personal Professional Growth Plan. You will be graded on this portion of your PPG Plan for this category of grading. This category will count as 100 points in the calculation of your final grade in the course. You may not make any higher grade in this course than your attendance at concerts and recitals reflects, as this attendance represents ACCEPTANCE of RESPONSIBILITY, a very important clinical skill.

Clinical skill – 100 points potential – will be graded by clinical supervisor*

Musical skill – 100 points potential – will be graded by weekly performances on ONLY 1 song/week – will have 15 songs across the semester except that students in MUTX 345 will have only 10 songs

Portfolio for this course is due at final 1:1 meeting and includes Personal Professional Growth Plan (all parts); copy of Assessment, Treatment Plan, and Treatment Evaluation with all confidential information omitted; 3-15 Week Plan; and organized set of session plans. A copy of your documentation including assessment, treatment plan, completed data sheets, and treatment evaluation must be posted on your university portfolio with all client identification information omitted. This work must be posted prior to your final exam 1:1 meeting. During this meeting you will bring up your university portfolio and show it to your teacher on the web. If it is not posted at the time of your final 1:1, your final grade in this course will be dropped one letter grade.

If you choose to complete session critiques using the form with three columns: plans, actual execution, plans for future – this document is excellent for posting on your Web Portfolio.

Things to Remember:

Goals are created based on needs of client – not on an activity that you want to do. Goals should not be tied to an activity. This concept is especially important in setting up data sheets. You may keep the same goal but change the activities that you use to target that goal. Make sure that your data sheets are set up to track responses to goals and are not activity-dependent.

Use “1:1” rather than “individual basis” to describe setting with one therapist and one client.

Include data sheets for any information that can be tallied.

Do NOT throw any confidential charting paper in the garbage can. Give it to Lee Anna for shredding.

Do NOT skip any lines when charting – not on Assessment, not on Progress Notes, not on Treatment Plan, and not on Treatment Eval.

On the exit sentence of your Discharge Summary, refer to Treatment Eval instead of continuing with wording “plan is ...”.

Goals of the Baccalaureate targeted in this course:

Please note that the UW-Eau Claire goals of the baccalaureate degree are encompassed in these course goals. An ability to think, analyze, write, read, speak, and listen is involved in the clinical process of assessing a patient, documenting the assessment, developing a treatment plan, documenting patient responses, and preparing treatment evaluations and home programs. An understanding of numerical data is involved in developing and using data sheets as a part of the documentation of patient responses. An understanding of science and scientific methods is the basis for the entire treatment process, and an appreciation of the arts is evidenced by our choice of music as our medium for medical intervention. An understanding of values and human behavior and human institutions is integral to our interaction with the patients and when applicable, their significant others, whether family or institutional staff. Because this class teaches how to begin and follow through with the therapeutic process, it develops an appreciation of the University as a learning community. International and intercultural experiences are involved for students in many settings, especially in the forensic settings, hospitals, and long term care facilities. A historical consciousness is targeted for students who are involved in institutional in-services prior to placement and for all students in the process of the IRB programming. The multiple layers and levels of experiences for students in this course certainly contribute to the understanding of a liberal education.

COURSE GOALS

Students participating successfully in this course will:

1.      take part in a minimum of 30 clinical contact hours of scheduled music therapy sessions and related tasks.

2.      describe accurately and concisely the clients, client treatment needs, treatment interventions, progress, and problems encountered in the clinical setting (in oral and written form).

3.      demonstrate skills in the identification, observation, recording, and evaluation of human behaviors.

4.      demonstrate increasing confidence and independence in the treatment of clients and in the reporting of procedures.

5.      establish effective rapport and professional working relationships with clinical site personnel.

6.      display mastery of lecture content and reading materials included in the course.
