V1W 3M4Tel: (250) 870-5106 TO KLO MUSIC!We are so excited that you decided to join the music program at KLO for the 2017/2018 school year. KLO has an active music department including choirs, concert bands, and jazz bands led by Mr. Klassen and Ms. Bone. Your first assignment is to review this handbook with your family and locate the KLO music webpage with your guardian(s). Please take the time to copy concert dates to your home calendar and sign up for your "Remind" account. We will need the participation agreement (located on the last page of this handbook) to be signed and returned on or before Wednesday, September 13th.It’s wonderful that you have decided to make music a part of your education! Be sure to take full advantage of the opportunities offered during your time at KLO! Music can be a truly rewarding and memorable school experience, and we look forward to helping you continue this journey with a great year of learning and making music together. OUR GOALSOur main goal is to create beautiful music together in a harmonious environment. Our role is to guide you as you start or continue to learn your instrument or voice, read music, and work together in a friendly and respectful atmosphere so we may perform music to the best of our ability. Not all music students become professional musicians, but certainly all become more mature, cooperative, self-disciplined, hardworking members of society with an appreciation of the arts. The life-lessons picked up in music are significant and can translate to success in other areas of your life!MUSIC ROOM GUIDELINESWe will go over routines more in-depth during class. These are some to keep in mind: Be attentive and respectful at all timesAvoid playing any instrument other than your own (tempting as this may be)Be ready to play/sing at the start of each class with all materials (pencil, agenda, music/folder and instrument in good working order – this includes reeds, etc). There is a strict no food/gum policy during rehearsals. Water, however, is encouraged and can be with you at your seat. WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOUParticipation to the full extent of your ability with energy and enthusiasm.Punctual attendance at all performances and rehearsals already scheduled, and those agreed upon by your ensemble. In addition, be on time for class and starting to setup/warmup by the time the second bell rings. For Choir members, the expectation is that you are seated and ready to start rehearsal by the second bell. When the bell goes, the class has started. Open-Mindedness Your classmates and teachers need you to be prepared for all rehearsals and performances. This may also include helping out with music room "duties" that are assigned to you or your section (E.g., taking care of the rehearsal room, equipment, storage areas, and sheet music). Each member of the ensemble is vital. We all come to depend on one other. You are important to us!MUSIC DEPARTMENT CONCERTS AND EVENTSThere are a number of performances and activities throughout the year, some of which may require parent volunteers to run successfully. These are including but not limited to: two evening school concerts, Remembrance Day assemblies, Grade 9 Music tour, and Kiwanis Festivals. Parents: The single best thing you can do for your student(s) is to come out to their concerts! Please mark these dates on your calendar. We expect to see you there! Please put the following important dates into your family calendars:Tuesday, September 19th Instrument Rental/First Lessons EveningAll grade 7 band students. Friday, November 10thRemembrance Day AssembliesAll Choir Students as well as Grade 9 Band Students. Tuesday, December 19th Winter ConcertAll grades/ensembles in the music departmentFriday, Jan 26th (TBC)Choir Collaboration with Vancouver Youth Choir All KLO Choir Students Tuesday, June 12th. Spring ConcertAll grades/ensembles in the music departmentJun 4-8, 2018Grade 9 Band and Choir TourGrade 9 Band students and grade 8/9 choir studentsThe bands and choirs may participate in the Kiwanis Festival and/or Jazz Festival in the spring. There will also be performances in the community throughout the school year. As we get closer to and have confirmed those dates, I will put them on the calendar.MUSIC PERFORMANCE FEESPerformances often have costs associated with them – especially if they are outside of KLO in the community. For this reason, each music student is asked to pay a yearly music performance fee of $20 for Grade 7 music students, which covers things like transportation, festival fees, etc when we leave the school for a performance. Students involved in more than one ensemble need not pay this fee twice. These fees need to be paid online through school cash online with all other school payments this fall. We don’t anticipate any further costs this year, aside from the touring students in grades 8 and 9, who pay for their trips MUNICATIONIn order to have a successful program, good communication between parents and teachers is essential. We want to be available to you to answer any questions you might have about the program, concerts, individual student progress, etc. If you have ANY questions or concerns please contact use directly by phone or email:tom.klassen@sd23.bc.ca taylor.bone@sd23.bc.caAlternately, you can reach us by phone at (250) 870-5106 and ask for the band room. Instrument accessories and cleaning supplies as listed belowRENTALBand students will need to go to Wind and Reed to rent your instrument. For new band students, there is an instrument rental night happening on Tuesday, September 19th. You will get a separate information sheet with more information about this in the coming weeks. Prior to this, the students will be introduced to the instruments and have some time to choose an instrument they are interested in learning to play. If you require a large instrument or need to rent from the school, there are a few school instruments available. However, we prefer you rent your instrument from the stores for a number of reason, including that they will be able to assist you in adjustments or repairs. Please see one of the music teachers directly if you are choosing a larger instrument and are interested in renting from the school. TIMELINE/ OverviewTerm One sept. 5th – nov.28, 2017Term Two nov.29, 2017 – Feb. 28, 2018Term Three march 1 – June 21, 2018SHEET MUSIC / STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE METHOD BOOKSheet music and method books are expensive. Please do your best to keep them in good condition. It’s okay to write on your parts. Good musicians are expected to write on their music. However, marks you make must be in pencil, and must be erased before the music is collected. Write lightly and always use a pencil. Music is to be returned in a similar condition to when it was handed out.INSTRUMENT STORAGE AT SCHOOLGr. 7 students use the "upper" storage room. Gr. 8 students use the cabinets in the band room. Gr. 9s use the room next to Mrs. Bone's office. We ask flute and clarinet players to keep instruments in lockers. At the end of the day, remember to stop by the band room to pick up your instrument. Your instrument is valuable and it is important to take care of it (and to take it home to practice!) ATTENDANCE IMPORTANT: It is absolutely essential that all members of our ensembles be present at all performances and dress rehearsals. We work together as a team. When even one person is absent, the entire ensemble is effected and virtually incomplete. Think of the Performance as your end of term exam for the class. Not only will it affect your mark if you are unable to be there, but this is one of the main things we are working towards all year and everyone needs to be there to participate. A phone call or email to Mr. Klassen or Ms. Bone before a performance or rehearsal is required for an absence to be excused. Excused absences should be a serious illness or family emergency. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns on this matter well before the week of the concert. Absences are to be made up through special arrangements with the music teachers. CONCERT PERFORMANCE ATTIRE FOR ALL ENSEMBLESBLACK top, BLACK bottom, BLACK socks, BLACK shoes Concert "Blacks" need to be as close to black from head to toe as possible. (This means tights underneath dresses/skirts, or pants (as opposed to shorts), and long sleeved shirts whenever possible (ideally collared). ASSESSMENTAssessments will be conducted both formally and informally. Formal assessments are recorded after which students receive written and verbal feedback. Informal assessments are taken from brief solo performances through Fresh Grade, or through teacher observation as the ensemble plays. Together, students and teachers will assess and discuss skills and help students better understand their targets, progress and set goals for improvement. Rubrics will categorize skills into four levels: Beginning (Not Yet Meeting, Advancing (Minimally Meeting), Meeting, and Exceeding. Students are welcome to stop by for extra help before and after school hours in the music room. Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: What kind of music do you play/sing?A: We try to include a variety of music in each ensemble based on the level the group is at and the learning outcomes we are working towards. Q: Can I switch instruments/voice parts in Grade 8?A: The second year of music is often a great time to switch. All of the basics you will have learned will transfer to a new instrument or voice part if you want to learn something new. There are so many reasons that students might have for switching – for each student, we'll talk about the reasons, and make sure that it's the right decision before moving forward with the switch. Please consult with Mr. Klassen/Ms. Bone before you to switch to another instrument.Q: Can I play the drums?A: It depends. A percussionist is one of the most important people in the band. They also have the most challenging rhythm reading, must be able to play a variety of instruments (auxiliary, mallet, snare, etc). and they don't get a lot of attention in rehearsals with everything else going on in front of them. You must own or rent a drum set with mallets or sticks for home and have private lessons from a professional to be considered as a percussionist.Q: Can I play piano or electric guitar in band?A: In Jazz Band we do have jazz piano and guitar, but a student would need about 5 years of private instruction before they would be able to handle the Jazz band music. Most students who play piano or Guitar in jazz band play a different instrument in concert band, since these parts do not exist in the concert band repertoire.Q: Do you do band trips?A: Yes. The grade 9 Band and KLO Grade 8/9 choir will go to Tofino this spring. There will be a parent meeting in October of where the trip will be presented and discussed.Q: Do we have to practice?A: Of course! The more you practice the stronger you will be on your individual instrument and the stronger the ensemble will be as a whole. This applies to singers as well! Q: How do I get an instrument?A: Options are to rent, rent-to-own, or purchase. You might want to look into buying a good used instrument by checking the newspapers or contacting our local music stores (Wentworth, Valley Wind and Reed). Brochures available in Music Dept. KLO does have limited instruments available for rental for those instruments we are in need of in our ensembles ($150 payable in September). Grade 7 band students will have an instrument rental/first lesson night in Mid September.Q: Do students need to take private lessons?A: No, except if you are a percussionist, bassist, guitarist or pianist. Private lessons are also highly recommended for oboe, bassoon, and French horn. For all instrumentalists, the opportunity to study privately with a professional musician can be an important factor in an individual's success if a student is struggling or wishes to progress more quickly.PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT/COMMITMENT FORMPlease complete and return this section indicating you reviewed the KLO Music Department Handbook with your student on or before Wednesday, September 13th.
