FIVE FORKS MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Explanation of Events

6th grade cello and bass night-This is a night “all about that bass”…and cello. :0) Students’ personal instruments will get tuned and finger taped, they’ll be assigned a school instrument to use in class, they’ll learn how to unpack and travel with their instrument safely, and students will get their first instrument lesson. Parents, stay and enjoy the fun!

Kendall/Gwinnett County Youth Symphony-These county-wide honor groups are based on an audition. Interested students will receive the audition requirements (scales and excerpts) during the first week of school. Kendall Youth Orchestra is open to advanced students in grades 6-8. They rehearse every Monday night at Duluth High School from 7:00-8:30 PM. The Gwinnett County Youth Symphony is for advanced students in grades 6-12. This orchestra rehearses every Monday night from 7:00-8:45 PM at Duluth High School. Both orchestras perform 2 concerts.

FFMS Honor Orchestra-This is Five Forks’ best group of student musicians! Students are selected based on an audition. Honor Orchestra will have 2 concerts as well as other possible performance opportunities throughout the year. The group only rehearses once a week, on Friday mornings, so attendance is vital.

All-State Auditions- All-State is a state-wide event consisting of rehearsals and a final concert in Athens, GA. Students who choose to audition will be asked to perform a required etude, list of scales, and sight-reading. This information will be given to students within the first few weeks of school. All- State is a competitive event. Although not required, private lessons are strongly encouraged for students who wish to pursue the All-State experience. The district audition is the first step towards the All-State weekend. If a student scores high enough to pass the first audition, he/she will be invited to participate in the final audition later in the year.

Solo/Ensemble Performance Evaluation-This GMEA (Georgia Music Educators’ Association) event is not required but encouraged. Students participate in this adjudicated (judged) event as a soloist or in a small group. Before/after school rehearsals will be necessary to prepare for this extra playing opportunity. Students that receive a Superior or Excellent Rating will receive an award. Five Forks has a history of students receiving either a Superior or Excellent rating!

Concerts-Each grade level will be involved in a number of concerts during the school year to show their family and friends all that they have learned! These are required, graded events as they are defined in the Gwinnett County Public Schools AKS.

Violapalooza-This is an optional, county-wide event for any viola student in grades 6-12. Students work with professional viola players in a half-day workshop and have the opportunity to hear a professional viola recital.

Pre-Large Group Performance Evaluation-This concert is for 7th and 8th grade orchestras to have a “dry-run” of our LGPE concert. Mock judges are hired to give comments so we can tweak our performance before LGPE.

Large Group Performance Evaluation-7th and 8th grade students participate in this GMEA sponsored event. Groups are adjudicated by music educators from around the state and country. Students and directors are given positive feedback and constructive criticism that will enable us to continue our musical growth. This is our best and most important performance of the year and all 7th and 8th grade students are required to participate.

Gwinnett 6th Grade Honor Orchestra- Selected 6th graders from each middle school in Gwinnett County will prepare and perform pieces in this one-day workshop. The workshop ends with a grand finale performance for family and friends.
