HMH Has Heart

We Went Red! Did you know heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year? On Friday, February 3, hundreds of team members gathered across our network to take Go Red group photos to kick off our Heart Month activities. Thanks to everyone who participated in our photos.

Help Us Reach 10 Million Steps At the Go Red photos, team members also learned about our first-ever Hackensack Meridian Health Step Challenge for team members. To celebrate National Heart Month, we invite you to increase the number of daily steps you take and join us in achieving 10 million steps across the network during Heart Month!

To join us, grab your favorite device or app and visit HMHhasHeart to enter your total steps for the day or week. We'll track how many collective steps our network has taken in February. Participating team members will also be entered into a drawing to win a FitBit Charge 2TM. More information can be found on your team member Intranet.

#HMHhasHeart Let's get social and increase the awareness of Hackensack Meridian Health's award-winning heart and stroke programs. We have created a Heart Month hashtag that we are encouraging our team members to use: #HMHhasHeart. Be on the lookout for the new hashtag, and feel free to share it with your friends and followers!

We've Been Selected for the National Heart Disease Prevention Program Hackensack Meridian Health is one of the select health care organizations picked by the federal government to participate in the Million Hearts initiative. This national five-year program aims to prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Twenty Hackensack Meridian Health providers and their practices in Monmouth and Ocean County are participating and focusing on patient intervention. They recently kicked off their program, which will feature a new evidence-based approach to determine a patient's 10-year risk for heart attack or stroke. Once a patient's risk is assessed, a personalized risk reduction plan will be created for the patient. Participating providers will focus on improving the "ABCS" ? aspirin for high-risk patients, bloodpressure control, cholesterol management, and smoking cessation.

The program started in January 2017 and will run until December 2021.

Steve Littleson Appointed as Chairman of the Board for New Jersey Hospital Association

At the New Jersey Hospital Association's (NJHA) 98th Annual Meeting in January, Steve Littleson, FACHE, president of the Hospital Services Division and Chief Operating Officer of Hackensack Meridian Health, was installed as the new chairman of the Board for NJHA for a one-year term.

Steve, whose journey with Hackensack Meridian Health began over 25 years ago as president and chief executive officer of Southern Ocean County Hospital (now Southern Ocean Medical Center) before it became part of Meridian Health, has become a trailblazer in the local health care community. At Southern Ocean County Hospital, he oversaw the campus more than double in size, adding new programs and services for the community while maintaining its position as one of the lowest cost hospitals in New Jersey.

at Meridian Health. Under his leadership at Jersey Shore, the hospital was the fastest-growing hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties and was the first state-designated children's hospital in the region.

His experience alone overseeing the major growth period of these hospitals has certainly prepared him to take on his new role as Chairman of NJHA's Board. However, tenure with NJHA is nothing new for Steve ? he has served as a member and officer on NJHA's Board of Trustees for several years and is a passionate advocate for patient safety and quality in an ever-challenging health care environment.

"As fast as our industry has been changing in the last couple of years, it is hard to imagine the pace of change getting any faster," says Steve. "But it has to... none of us can improve the health of the people of New Jersey by going it alone."

At the conclusion of his induction, Steve charged everyone in the room to adopt being "all in," which he later claimed as NJHA's mantra in 2017, specifically in reference to health care strategies we can all deliver to our local communities ? together.

Co-Chairman of the Board Honored with Healthcare System Trustee of the Year

Joseph Simunovich, co-chairman of Hackensack Meridian Health's Board of Trustees, was recently awarded New Jersey Hospital Association's (NJHA) Healthcare System Trustee of the Year for his highly-valued and deeply-respected tenure as trustee leader of HackensackUMC. Joseph, whose time serving on the board for HackensackUMC has spanned for more than 25 years, has been an influential contributor and influencer for the growth of HackensackUMC's success in recent years.

Joseph has seen the once small HackensackUMC graduate into the #1 hospital in New Jersey, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. He has led or played a major role in fundraising for projects, including the Sarkis and Siran Gabrellian Women's and Children's Pavilion, the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital, the Donna A. Sanzari Women's Hospital, the Mark Messier Skyway for Tomorrow's Children, the John Theurer Cancer Center, and the Heart & Vascular Hospital at HackensackUMC.

Congratulations to our respected board member on this prestigious achievement.

Eli Manning Wins Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award

The team at Hackensack Meridian Health is pleased to congratulate New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning on his Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. He shares the award with Wide Receiver Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals.

All proceeds raised by Tackle Kids Cancer directly support pediatric cancer research and program services at the Children's Cancer Institute at HackensackUMC.

"Eli shares our vision in advancing the Tackle Kids Cancer initiative in many ways," said Jon M. Fitzgerald, president of the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation. "In 2016, he issued a matching donation challenge that ignited the community and exceeded the goal. We are proud to partner with Eli on this essential program."

"We are ecstatic that Eli achieved this incredible honor," said Robert C. Garrett, cochief executive officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. "He is a valued team member both on and off the field, and we are particularly grateful for his devotion to our patients and the Tackle Kids Cancer initiative."

campaign ahead of the 2015 season, Eli regularly visits

the children battling cancer at the Children's Cancer Institute at HackensackUMC. His fundraising,

appearances and personal donations are exemplified by the creation of the Sohn-Manning Pediatric

Cancer Survivorship Program, among the many fundraising efforts he inspired. During its inaugural

season the Giants, Eli and HackensackUMC were surprised by the many local grass roots organizations

supporting Tackle Kids Cancer, so Eli pledged to match and inspire those efforts ? and "Eli's Challenge"

was born, exceeding the goal in the first few weeks of the program. To date, his support of the program

has directly led to more than $1,000,000 in fundraising in just over one year, and propelled the new

charitable program to over $4,000,000 in funds raised since its inception.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field. This is the first time a New York Giants player has won the award in its history.

Super Bowl LI Lessons: How Teamwork and Great Leadership Achieve Amazing Things

What lesson about leadership did you learn from watching the Super Bowl?

"Never give up. Never, ever give up. Support each other on and off the field." ? Dean Lin, regional president of Ocean Medical Center and Southern Ocean Medical Center

"Never give up and never underestimate the power of a team!" ? Regina Foley, R.N., MHA, FACHE, FCPP, chief operating officer, Bayshore Community Hospital

"Being down 25 points going into the final quarter, the obvious answer is to possess a `never quit' attitude. But that attitude and resolve must be shared by the entire team, not just the leader. And the strategy for the Patriots was to focus on making one play at a time. The Patriots didn't resort to trick plays or long bombs; they stayed with their strengths to methodically get back into contention for the ultimate victory." ? Paul Huegel, senior executive director, Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation

"The Super Bowl reinforced for me that sometimes leadership is realizing when something is not working and making changes. It's about putting your team in the best position for success." Florey Cruz-Cerpa, Manager, Community Health Department, HackensackUMC Mountainside

"I would say my biggest takeaway would be the importance of perseverance. Although things may temporarily look grim as a leader it is important to believe in yourself and your team and remain committed to the task at hand." ? Kelli O'Brien, RD, MBA, chief operating officer, Riverview Medical Center

"Winners stay focused till the very end and never give up." ? Bob Adams, Jr., FACHE, president, Southern Ocean Medical Center

"Remain calm and in control when all looks lost." ? Louis Longobardo, Special Imaging manager, HackensackUMC

"Actually the outcome of the game reminded me of a quote from a former NFL coach: `Stay focused. Your start does not determine how you're going to finish' (Herm Edwards, Head Coach New York Jets (2001-05), Kansas City Chiefs (2006-08)." ? William F. DiStanislao, vice president of Operations, Raritan Bay Medical Center ? Old Bridge

"As leaders, we are always going to face some tough days when nothing seems to go right. You can never give up because even adversity offers opportunity for greater success. And when you are ahead, do not stop pushing forward." ? Joseph Burt, vice president of development, executive director, HackensackUMC Palisades Foundation

"As leaders, we are faced with many challenges that at times we doubt our ability to consistently deliver. Watching the super bowl and the Patriots deliver a win, only serves as additional reinforcement that when we put our mind to something, we not only deliver but can excel. It is the collective effort of our fellow team members and colleagues that makes the difference in coming to work every day. No man is an island-we cannot excel without the combined work ethic of our peers." ? Carol Anne Giordano, RN, MSN, CWS, manager of QA & Staff Development, Meridian At Home
