NAPLAN EXAMS BEGIN WEEK 4

23 April 2021

Year 9 exams will be sat from Monday 17th May until 21st May

Year 10 exams begin 24th May until 28th May

Year 8 31st May until 4th June

Year 11, which only operates for 3 terms, does not have half yearly exams. They have ongoing assessments, examinations and assignments.

We wish all students well in their half yearly examinations.

From the Principal

Duke of Edinburgh

The first Duke of Edinburgh trek left our school yesterday for a two day hike in the recently opened Blue Mountains. Mr Dimopoulos, our Careers Advisor, was very thankful when earlier this week it was confirmed the trek could take place after rangers inspected recently flooded trek trails. 24 students and 3 staff are currently completing the bronze trek. There are two more treks planned for this term and, weather permitting, they will also go ahead. Thanks to all staff and students for continuing this ever-popular program.

Welcome to Term 2

I trust all students and families had a restful and relaxing holiday before an extremely busy Term 2. There is a great deal happening within our school community during Term 2. These events will be highlighted in the newsletter, on the website and on our official Facebook page.

Sport

Winter sport has begun. Wednesday saw round 1 of the Grade season commence with RBHS fielding many teams in certain sports. Soccer (Football) is a growing sport at Randwick Boys' High School and has proven to be one of the most competitive to gain selection.

Half yearly exams

Late last term, our Year 12 students completed their assessments during the Assessment block. Staff are now busy marking and preparing reports that will be issued later this term.

Year 7 begin their half yearly exams on the 7th May and

finish on the 14th May. This week (10th - 14th) also includes the

NAPLAN exams. We appreciate students will be studying content

for their half

yearly exams as well as completing their

NAPLAN skills exams in the same week;

however, our assessment schedule was

based on the same schedule as other

years and NAPLAN just happened to

fall in the same week. It will be a busy

time for Year 7 and then they will also

await their half yearly reports which will

be issued before the end of the term.

Rugby, on the other hand is dwindling at our school and across the Zone. Unfortunately, schools in our zone could only field an under 14's and under 16's competition. We have promoted these opportunities amongst our students and I am disappointed to report that Randwick Boys' High School will only field an under 14's Rugby Team in 2021. This is reflected across the zone and community and leaves Rugby in a dire situation for the game in the future. We wish our under 14's team well in the competition.

Other winter grade sports are also healthy and popular.

Recreational and house sport continues for all other students. A reminder to all students and parents that sport is a compulsory component of the curriculum. It is only Year 12 who have the option of not participating in sport at school.

NAPLAN

Police talks

The annual NAPLAN exams for Years 7 & 9 begin on Tuesday 11th May and end on Friday 14th May. Ms Payne and Ms Loizou have coordinated the NAPLAN exams with assistance from Ms Cassar and Mr Matin and we thank them for their efforts.

RBHS has arranged for Danny McManus, School Liaison Police, Youth & Crime Prevention Command, to visit school to deliver talks to year groups on issues relevant to each cohort. We usually have Danny speak each year; however, during 2020 and with Covid 19 restrictions, such talks were not possible.

Athletics carnival

The Randwick Boys' High School annual Athletics Carnival will be held on Monday 3rd May. Mr Noreika has issued information to students and there is a copy in this newsletter. It is important that families are aware of all expectations and all deadlines etc are met. Once again, it should be a brilliant day and considering the 2020 carnival did not take place due to Covid 19, we expect attendance and participation to be excellent!

These talks will take place on Tuesday 4th and Thursday 6th May (Week 3) during periods 1, 2, 3 in the Library. Each presentation will take about 30 minutes and will give the students the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarification on social and legal issues concerning them.

We have always found these workshops to be engaging and valuable to the boys as they provide them with the legal information that they require to make sensible and informed decisions.

Sunday 25th April

Students will be accompanied by their teachers and these talks are delivered in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner. Students are also able to opt out or visit the School Counsellor if any issues raised are of concern to them.

Many of our student leaders will participate in the Anzac Day Commemorations on Sunday 25th April. They will be performing duties for the Coogee/Randwick/Clovelly RSL Sub-branch, who have organised an Anzac March from the Coogee Diggers Club to Coogee beach, with a service to follow. I would like to thank all students for their participation and commitment to our community as well as Ms Manzalji for coordinating the involvement of our school and students.

Potatoes

23 April 2021

Early Leavers from School

From time to time, students are required by their parents, to leave school early. On all occasions, we require written authorisation from parents to be able to approve this. This is especially important on sport afternoons (Wednesdays) when large numbers of students are off site at different venues.

Students should bring their parental letters to the Deputy Principal to get signed. Letters are then taken to the rolls office where the early leave is logged on our system.

Administration

In Term 4 2020, Year 11 began their HSC studies. For the Biology classes the first topic was about asexual reproduction. To investigate the process of vegetative propagation, the class removed the eyes from a potato and planted them into one of the garden beds near the cricket nets. They examined the plants that shot up a few weeks later, and even pulled out one of the plants, taking note of the tiny potatoes, which were growing from the roots. The plant was re-planted and pretty much left alone for 6 months.

Today, much to our surprise, a very excited Ms Carle, who runs the gardening club, presented me with 4 enormous potatoes, one sprouting its own little babies!

Student feeling unwell while at school

If your son/ward becomes unwell at school, he needs to:

1. Ask teacher for a note to go to the office.

2. After reporting to the office he will be sent to the Deputy Principal.

3. The Deputy Principal will decide if the parent/carer needs to be called.

This ensures your son/ward's attendance will be correctly marked for the rest of the day.
