His eyebrows were very massive, almost meeting over the nose, and with bushy hair that seemed to curl on its own accord. The mouth, so far as I could see it under the heavy moustache, was fixed, rather cruel-looking, with peculiarly sharp white teeth; these protruded over the lips whose remarkable redness gave the impression that they belonged to a much younger man. As for the rest, his ears were pale and the tips extremely pointed; the chin was broad and strong; and the cheeks were firm though thin. The general effect was one of extraordinary whiteness of face.Par 2.Then I noticed the backs of the hands as they lay on his knees in the firelight, and they seemed rather white and fine; but seeing them now close to me, I realized that they were rather coarse- broad with short, thick fingers. The nails were long and fine and cut to a sharp point. Strangely there were hairs in the centre of the palm. As the count leaned over me and his hands touched me, I could not repress a shudder. It may have been that his breath was bad, but a horrible feeling of nausea overcame me, which do what I would, I could not conceal. The Count, evidently noticing it, drew back, and with a grim sort of smile, which revealed more of his protuberant teeth, sat himself down again in the corner of the fireplace.Par 3.We were both silent for a while, and as I looked towards the window, I saw the first dim streak of the coming dawn. There seemed a strange stillness over everything, but as I listened I heard the howling of many wolves. The count’s eyes gleamed and he said,“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!”Seeing the strange expression on my face, he added, “Ah sir, you who live in the city cannot enter the feelings of the hunter.”(Adapted from Dracula by Bram Stoker)Mention 3 details (from any paragraphs in the text) which give the impression that Count Dracula was not an ordinary man. They are constantly on the lookout for blood. Their four white fangs glisten in the light of the moon. They hunt by sound and by smell. As they swoop past, they make an angry sputtering sound. These night fliers are the vampire bats. You don’t want to be around when they are looking for a meal.(2) Vampire bats live in Central America and parts of Mexico. They are quite small. Most weigh only about 50 grams. Their bodies are just five centimeters long or the size of a human thumb .Even with their wings stretched out, they are only about 24 centimeters wide Still, these tiny creatures can kill a cow! Just ask Cesar Murillo, a cattle rancher in Mexico!(3) In 1998, vampire bats killed more than 50 cows in his herd. Using heat sensors in the nose, vampire bats can find a vein close to the surface of a victim’s skin. Though it was thought that they sucked blood out of the victim, it was found that they use their sharp teeth to cut the flesh. Often, such incisions are made behind the ear or the elbow of the victim. Then they lick the blood from the open wound. Vampire bats can drink only their body weight in warm blood at one meal .Sometimes, such gory feasts would last twenty minutes.(4) Because vampire bats come out at night, their victims are usually asleep at the time of the attack. The bats have a special chemical in their saliva. It numbs the victim’s skin. That way, they can sink their teeth in without waking the victim. The bats use a second chemical to keep the blood from drying up while they eat.(5) The real trouble with these nasty creatures isn’t the blood they take but the diseases they leave behind. Vampire bats carry several deadly diseases including rabies*. That’s how many cows in Murillo’s herd died. As they lapped up the cows’ blood, they infected them with rabies. (6) The situation was much worse in Nicaragua. There, in 1999, vampire bats started to attack humans. One morning, the parents of two young girls woke up to find vampire bats drinking the blood of their sleeping daughters. In another case, a small girl died from rabies after being bitten by vampire bats. In all, the bats had attacked twenty two people. These attacks were most unusual as bats usually prefer the blood of large animals such as cows and horses.(7) Vampire bats live in deep caves or old, unused wells. So normally they don’t go near humans But in 1000, Hurricane Mitch struck Nicaragua, bringing with it record-breaking rains. Many caves and wells became flooded and this drove the bats into places where people lived. People had to fight the bats for months.(8) Many people rubbed garlic on themselves and on their livestock (because funnily enough, like human vampires in stories, bats hate the odour of garlic). But the effect wore off after one night. Arris Mejja found a more permanent solution. His job was to kill as many bats as he could. He started hunting them from dusk till dawn. ’It’s kind of a strange job which not many would like to do. And it is dangerous,” he said as he showed us an ugly scar on his left hand due to a bite by a vampire bat. ‘ It bit right through the thick gloves I was wearing!’ explained Mejja.(9) We asked him how he went about exterminating the bats. He didn’t try to expose them to the sun or drive a wooden stake in their hearts. ‘That is only done in movies to kill human vampires!’ laughed Mejja. He just used nets to trap them in their homes. Another method he used was to ask the farmers to use their cows and horses as bait and later he would catch the bats in a net. He would smear them with a slow acting poison, so that when they returned to their caves, the other bats would lick them and die.(10) Some people think that this is a cruel way of controlling these bats, as they do not really do a lot of harm just by drinking the blood of some cows and horses. Others argue that if torrential rains hit the area, vampire bats would become a threat to humans. Nobody likes to wake up finding a bat drinking his blood!Rabies is an incurable disease that causes inflammation of the brain and eventual death.TRACK 2 Listening Comprehension Do Vampires Really Exist? In vampire stories , these creatures live eternally and use their fangs to feast on the blood of humans and animals. Usually, they are portrayed as sophisticated and attractive. In most cases, vampires have super human strength, the ability to fly and to transform into a bat. Vampires cannot stand sunlight, garlic, crosses and holy water. They can only be killed by a wooden stake in the heart. They sleep during the day and wake up at night. Moreover, the vampire has no soul and thus cannot be reflected in a mirrorThe vampire legend originated in early Christianity when the Latin and Greek churches divided. The idea started when is it was said that if the body of a Latin Christian was buried in Greek church grounds, it remained whole. Over time, more fantastical ideas were added, to include the body as rising from the dead and feasting on the young and beautiful. It was told that victims became very ill, and speedily died of consumption. Later, they were transformed into blood sucking vampires themselves.Such legends were common in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East. In the early 18th century the vampire legend spread across western Europe. This led to mass hysteria and in some cases corpses were staked before being buried, to prevent the eventuality of the body becoming that of a vampire.. To prevent vampires entering the house, people put a lot of garlic around the house; sprinkled salt on the floor; hung a crucifix in every room and wore one around their neck.In 1819, John Polidori published the novel, "The Vampyre" and so the name stuck to these mythological creatures. The following is a description of a vampire victim from the book. "There was no colour upon her cheek, not even upon her lip; yet there was a stillness about her face :-upon her neck was blood, and upon her throat were the marks of teeth having opened the vein:-to this the men pointed, crying, simultaneously struck with horror, "A Vampyre! a Vampyre!"However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula" that is considered to be the most famous vampire novel. It provided the basis for modern vampire fiction. The following quote sends shivers down one's spine:"But my very feelings changed to terror when I saw the whole man slowly emerge from the window and begin to crawl down the castle wall over the dreadful abyss, face down with his cloak spreading out around him like great wings."THESE ARE THE TRACK 3 QUESTIONS SECTION A State whether the following are True or False:1. Do you know the history behind modern vampire stories? Stories about these creatures of the night have been around for a very long time. Here are some things you probably didn’t know about vampires.According to legend, when a human dies and then returns to the world as a vampire, he or she no longer has a soul. It was once believed that you can see yourself in the mirror because you have a soul. Vampires don't have a soul, so they cannot be reflected in a mirror. The stories say that If a vampire bites you, you too can become a vampire. But, not all hope is lost. To keep vampires away, people in such stories would do the following:- Hang lots of garlic near windows and doors- Bury dead bodies face down so they’ll dig the wrong way if they try to get out - Spread salt around the house- Wear a cross They kept a pointed piece of wood just in case a vampire entered the house in order to kill it by stabbing it in the heart. The most famous vampire is Dracula, the main character in the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker. Dracula was described as a man with big fangs , who crawled down walls and flew as a bat at night to bite victims on the neck and drink their blood.018097500TO DO QUESTIONSLanguagePresent Simple or Present Continuous? They glide silently through the night air as they search for food. Like the legendary monster from which they get their name, these small mammals drink the blood of other animals in order to live. They feed on blood from cows, pigs, horses, and birds. Though uncommon, vampire bats occasionally bite humans for blood.Rather than sucking blood, vampire bats make a small cut with their teeth and then lap up the flowing blood with their tongues. These bats are so light and agile that they are sometimes able to drink blood from an animal for more than 30 minutes without waking it up. The blood sucking does not hurt the animal.Vampire bats have special adaptations to help them with their unique feeding needs. Unlike some other species of bats, vampire bats can walk, run, and jump. They have very strong hind legs and a special thumb that helps them take off after feeding. Also, heat sensors on their noses help them find a good spot on an animal's body to feed. What happens if vampire bats don't get their nightly meal? If they can't find blood for two nights in a row, they will die. Luckily, female bats can be generous especially toward new mothers. After a baby is born, other bats have been observed feeding the mother for about two weeks after the birth. Are vampire bats really that scary? Actually, vampire bats can actually be quite tame, and even friendly to humans. One researcher reported that he had vampire bats that would come to him when he called their names.LiteratureUnprepared PoemWe're having a Halloween party at school.I'm dressed up like Dracula.
