Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District

Dear Parents/Guardians, We have been made aware that there is a diagnosed case of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (Coxsackie Virus) involving one of our athletes. At this point the individual who was diagnosed will be held away from any co-curricular activity until she/he is cleared by a physician. The athletic and custodial staff have been notified, and all cleaning and disinfecting protocols have been followed. We are actively monitoring the health of our student athletes. The Coxsackie Virus, also know as Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a contagious illness that is caused by different viruses. It is common in infants and children younger than 5 years old; however, older children and adults can also get HFMD. Symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease often include the following:FeverReduced appetiteSore throatA feeling of being unwellPainful sores in the mouth that usually begin as flat red spotsA rash of flat red spots that may blister on the palms of the hand, soles of the feet, and sometimes the knees, elbows, buttocks, and/or genital areaThese symptoms usually appear in stages, not all at once. Also, not everyone will get all of these symptoms. Some people may show no symptoms at all, but they can still pass the virus to others. HFMD is usually not serious. The illness is typically mild, and nearly all people recover in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment. Complications are uncommon. We will continue to monitor the situation at Ramapo, and if additional actions to control the spread of HFMD becomes necessary, we will notify you.If you have any specific concerns or questions about your child’s health, please contact your healthcare provider. For more information, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Website.Sincerely,Ron Anello Athletic DirectorRamapo High School ................
