2. Brief description of the Division

The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board was established on 1 April 2006. It is the largest acute Division in Scotland. It consists of multiple sites, including Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow Dental Hospital, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Stobhill Hospital, Royal Hospital for Children, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Hospital and the recently opened Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The Division provides a comprehensive range of services from community based care (midwives, dental services and various outreach services) through the full range of general hospital services through to regional and national specialist services. In addition, the Division has close links with the Universities in Glasgow and makes a significant contribution to teaching.

Patients come not only from the Greater Glasgow and Clyde areas but also for the whole of the west of Scotland (for regional services) and from the whole of Scotland (for national services).

Both Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Royal Hospital for Children treat acute plastic surgical cases. The regional burns unit for adults is situated in Glasgow Royal Infirmary and for children at the Royal Hospital for Children.

3. The work of the Directorate/Department/Specialty

The entire service moved from Canniesburn Hospital to a purpose built unit on the Glasgow Royal Infirmary site in April 2003, which includes the regional burns unit. The total bed complement is 41 -13 in the burns unit 16 in the general plastic surgical ward and 10 in the high acuity ward. In addition to this it hosts a same day admission / outpatient procedures / day surgery department

The work of the department includes the full range of Plastic Surgery with specific areas of interest including Hand Surgery, Breast Surgery, Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery, Laser Surgery, Male and Female Perineal Reconstruction, Microsurgery and Burns.

Some patients are referred from general practitioners, but a considerable proportion of the work is referred from other specialties within the hospital, both locally and from other health boards across the region.

There is a full range of X-ray and other diagnostic and laboratory facilities provided by departments in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, including Anaesthetics, Haematology, Pathology, Microbiology and Specialist Radiology.

The Hand Clinics in both adult and childrens’ services are supported by specialist Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapists and also by the National Centre for Prosthetics.

4 .The Job itself

Background

The post of Consultant with a special interest in hand surgery is a replacement post created due to the retirement of an existing consultant, however the job plan is essentially a new post, which has been created to add to the current hand surgery service provided by the department. The postholder will therefore be expected to have a demonstrable training and / or experience in hand surgery, with the possibility of treating rheumatoid hand surgery, wrist conditions and secondary procedures after hand trauma. They will also be expected to have some involvement in managing general plastic surgery patients, especially skin cancer, and to participate in the general plastic surgery on call rota. The exact division between hand and general plastic surgery will depend on the experience of the successful candidate.
