BARCODE SCANNERS

BARCODE SCANNERS

What is a Barcode Scanner?

A barcode scanner is a device that uses a laser or other technology to collect and interpret barcodes. It scans the barcode using a laser or other technology. Before the information contained in the barcode can be used, it must be decoded by software, which is either incorporated within the barcode scanner itself or in the form of software on a desktop, laptop, server, PDA or other computer. This turns the alternating black and white bars seen on a product into a string of letters and/or numbers that can then be used to look up pricing, inventory or other information for that product.

Types of Barcodes

In choosing a barcode scanner it is critical to make sure it is compatible with selected automation software. Do not apply barcodes until you have selected automation software. The two main types of barcodes used in libraries are Code 39 and Codabar with Code 39 being the recommended choice.

Code 39 was the first alphanumeric symbology to be developed. The rectangle of lines and spaces translates into 10 digits, but they are not displayed. The first digit is used to identify whether the barcode is for a patron or an item. The next two digits identify the institution. The last seven digits are a unique code which represent either a patron or an item.

Codabar barcodes are the most frequently used barcodes in libraries. The rectangle of lines and spaces translates into 14 digits. The first digit is used to identify whether the barcode is for a patron or an item. The next four digits identify the institution. The following eight digits represent patron or item information, and the final digit is an error-checking digit.

Types of Barcode Scanners

A barcode scanner can use several different types of scanning technology to scan the barcode and can use various connection methods to transmit the data it collects to a computer.

We would recommend a handheld, laser PS2 keyboard wedge barcode scanner, which connects to the keyboard port on a computer. When a barcode is scanned, the data appears on the screen just as though it had been entered via the keyboard. Keyboard wedge barcode scanners come with a 'Y' connector, which allows the keyboard and the scanner to be connected and used at the same time. This is a very simple and easy-to-install type of barcode scanner, but it does not allow any modification or re-ordering of the barcode's data before displaying it on the screen.

The Metrologic MS9520 Voyager can be used as both a handheld and fixed projection scanner with its keyboard wedge interface.
