SINGLE POINT LEVEL MEASUREMENT SYSTEM (ULTRASONIC)

Part 1. General

1.1 Scope

A. This section describes the requirements for an ultrasonic, single-point level controller with integral transducer and temperature compensator.

B. Under this item, the contractor shall furnish and install the

single-point level system as indicated on the plans and as herein specified.

1.2 Submittals

A. The following information shall be included in the submittal for this section:

1. Data sheets and catalog literature for the integral transducer and transceiver.

2. Interconnection and dimensional drawings.

Part 2. ULTRASONIC SINGLE-POINT LEVEL SYSTEM

Transmitter

• The single-point level transmitter shall be a microprocessor based echo-time measuring type providing an electronic output signal proportional to the level of the material or the distance to the material being measured. It shall consist of an integral transmitter, transducer and temperature sensor package. The unit shall have HART communication capabilities as standard, and will have a visible LCD during operation. The unit can be programmed using the infra-red handheld programmer while still maintaining

Type 4X/NEMA 4X/NEMA 6 rating. The unit shall be able to convert readings from level to volume or flow.

B. Operating principle

• Acoustic impulses emitted from an ultrasonic sensor are reflected back from the material surface and are received by the same sensor. The transit time of the pulse from transmission generation to echo reception is recorded. The elapsed time is proportional to the distance between the sensor and material surface based on the speed of sound for that application. The unit has the ability to automatically shape around obstructions, if necessary.

C. Primary Sensor

• The acoustic sensor/transducer shall be an ultrasonic transducer with a polarized zirconium crystal with acoustic impedance matching face and transformer. After mounting, the unit head will be able to swivel 360° for positioning display.

1. Range is 0.25 to 12 m (10” to 40 ft).

2. System housing

• Enclosure material is PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate). Transducer material is ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) or PVDF (Polyvinylidene Flouride). Conduit connection is

2x ½” NPT or 2xM20 cable glands.

3. Process temperature

- 40 to 85 °C (-5 to 185 °F)

4. Power supply

• nominal 24 V DC with 550 ohms maximum

5. Output

• 4 to 20 mA loop and HART protocol

6. Programming

• Using Siemens SIMATIC PDM (PC) or HART handheld communicator, or Siemens Milltronics infra-red handheld programmer

7. EEPROM memory retains parameters during power loss.

8. Weight: 2.1 kg (4.6 lbs)

9. Conduit connection 2x½ NPT thread or 2xM20 cable

gland

10. Enclosure rating Type 4X/NEMA 4X, Type 6/

NEMA 6/IP67/IP68

11. Approvals:

IS: FM Class I, Div. 1, Groups A, B,C, D (barrier required); Class II, Div. 1, Groups E,F, G; Class III

GP: FM Class I, Div. 2, Groups A,B,C,D T5 (non-incendive, no barrier required)

12. Transmitter shall process all echoes from stored memory which is continually updated after echo enhancement.

13. The echoes shall be processed comparing returns for largest area echo, tallest echo spike and first echo returned. The patented Sonic Intelligence shall compare the various returns and select the echo with the greatest confidence factor.

14. Process Connection/Mounting: 2” NPT, 2” BSP,

2” G/PF2 thread

D. Sensor and transmitter performance

1. Range: 0.25 to 12 m (10” to 40 ft).

2. Accuracy: ± the greater of 0.15% of range or

6 mm (0.25”)

3. Resolution: ≤ 3 mm (0.12”)

E. Indication

1. multi-segment alphanumeric liquid crystal display with

Bar graph (representing level)

F. Equipment

1. The single point level controller shall be a Siemens

SITRANS Probe LU, 12 meter

Part 3. Operator Functions

3.1 Calibration

Calibration of this single-point level controller shall be accomplished by using Siemens SIMATIC PDM (PC) or HART handheld communicator, or Siemens Milltronics infra-red handheld programmer to enter all parameters

.

3.2 Transmitter Function Details

The following functions shall be provided:

A. The controller shall provide a 4-20 mA or 20-4 mA signal proportional to level, space, distance, volume or flow into a maximum of 550 ohms with 24 V DC power supply.

B. Operational range shall be adjustable using infrared hand-held programmer, SIMATIC PDM, or HART handheld programmer.

C. HART communications will be standard.

D. The controller shall have a EEPROM memory and shall not require a battery to ensure protection of stored data.

E. There shall be no internal potentiometers or switches used in programming or adjusting the controller.

F. The controller shall be capable of automatically compensating for variances in temperature.

G. The controller shall be capable of compensating for chemical atmospheres which very the speed of sound.

Part 4. Execution

4.1 Installation

A. Follow manufacturers recommendation for the maximum separation between the transducer face and the closest point of target approach.

B. Mount the device to ensure a clear path to the target surface.

Part 5. Manufacturers Requirements

The local factory trained representative of the selected equipment shall have a website containing manuals for the equipment being supplied, training videos covering key features and basic configuration of the instrument, and list frequently asked questions with troubleshooting guidelines. This website shall list local contacts with name, address, telephone number and e-mail addresses.
