Day 9

Happy Birthday

by Jennifer Rzasa

Card size: 4?" x 5?"

Instructions:

1. Secure a watercolor paper panel to a waterresistant work surface using painter's tape. Saturate the panel with water using a Mini Mister, concentrating the water toward the right side of the panel.

2. Pick up Red-Orange watercolors from a palette using a wet brush. Tape the brush to spatter the watercolors over the panel, concentrating the color toward the right side of the panel. This concentration of color will be your treetop.

3. Pick up Purple watercolors from a palette using a wet brush. Tape the brush to spatter the watercolors over the panel, concentrating the color in your treetop area. Repeat using Blue, Yellow, and multiple shades of Green watercolors. Heat set as needed.

4. Pick up Brown watercolors using a wet brush. Apply in short strokes to create a single-line tree trunk. From the top of the trunk, branch out in thin, small lines to create branches up into the treetop. Extend the bottom of the tree out a bit wider to give it balance. Create three wide sections at the bottom of the tree trunk to "root" the tree to the ground.

5. Paint a few thin, Brown lines in the treetop to complete the look of the tree.

6. Allow the watercolors to dry completely, or heat set.

7. Stamp a greeting in Charcoal Shadow ink on the watercolor panel.

Tips & Tricks

? Who says trees have to be green? Using lots of vibrant colors to create a tree adds to the whimsical look created by watercolors.

? Different concentrations of water on a single piece of watercolor paper can help you achieve a look like the one Jennifer created here! Where the water saturation is heavier, the colors will blend and soften, but where the panel is drier, the individual spatters of color will stand out.

Hooray

by Jennifer Rzasa

Card size: 5?" x 4?"

Instructions:

1. With a font reference in front of you, lightly sketch out your greeting on a watercolor panel using a pencil.

2. Lightly run a large art eraser over the entire panel to lighten the pencil lines. This will help prevent the pencil lines from getting "trapped" under the watercolors. You want to be able to see it, but you don't want heavy lines.

3. Squeeze Mauve watercolor from the tube into a palette. Apply water to thin out the pigment gel without diluting the color. You want a rich color for this technique.

4. Hold a fine, flat brush at an angle (as you would a pen), and trace the letters in broad brushstrokes to create solid lines.

5. Go back in and add additional watercolors where you want the letters to be darker. Smooth out any visible brushstrokes.

6. Allow the watercolors to dry completely, or heat set.

7. Die cut a variety of stars from the watercolor panel, creating star windows.

8. Create a top-folding, landscape-oriented card from True Black cardstock.

9. Cut a 4?" x 5?" panel from Atlantic patterned paper. Adhere the patterned paper panel to the card.

10. Adhere the watercolor panel to the card using dimensional adhesive.

11. Cut a thin strip of True Black cardstock. Adhere the cardstock strip to the right edge of the watercolor panel.

Supplies:

? Memory Box Cosmic Star Set Dies (SSS | EH) ? Winsor and Newton Watercolors Set of 12 (SSS) ? Winsor and Newton Watercolors Set of 6 (SSS) ? Winsor and Newton Watercolors (DB) ? Other: font from online, paint brush, pencil, eraser, die-

Tips & Tricks

? To create your own hand-painted sentiment, find inspiration in free-font websites. Just make sure to sketch everything out using a pencil before starting to paint.

? Go over your sketched out greeting with a large eraser before beginning to watercolor. You want to still be able to see the pencil lines, but you don't want to "trap" the lines inside the watercolor.

Happy Birthday

by Kristina Werner

Card size: 4?" x 5"

Instructions

1. Secure a panel of watercolor paper to a particleboard sheet using painter's tape. This will help reduce warping.

2. Using a ruler and pencil, draw a line about 1/3 from the bottom edge. Draw another line about 1" above the first. This second line will help you keep your drawings well proportioned.

3. Using a pencil, draw several boxes of different heights and widths along the first pencil line, so the second pencil line bisects each box. Draw additional boxes stacked on the first line, considering the heights of the stacked boxes and the ways in which they would lean on each other. Draw the smallest boxes on top.

4. Draw ribbon lines on some of the boxes, in different configurations.

5. Erase the original guidelines from inside your boxes, leaving the ones outside the boxes in place.

6. Pick up Purple watercolor directly from the pigment square in your watercolor palette using a wet brush. Apply the full concentration to the bottom edge of the first box. Distribute upward to create a gradient.

7. Pick up Blue watercolor directly from the pigment square in your watercolor palette using a wet brush. Dab the color along the bottom edge of the first box, directly over the Purple watercolor. Blend the Blue upward, adding more water if needed.

73

8. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for the remaining boxes, switching color combinations between boxes to create a dynamic look. As needed, switch brushes to ensure even color distribution for the size of box you're working. Try experimenting with dabbing the second color at the top and blending downward instead of blending up.

9. Allow the watercolors to dry completely, or heat set.

10. Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to watercolor some of the wide ribbons. Watercolor additional ribbons with a stark Black that will make the bold colors of the presents pop.

11. Allow the watercolors to dry completely, or heat set.

12. Apply a light Gray color wash around the bottom row of boxes, between the two guidelines to create a tabletop.

13. Apply a stark Black color wash below the first guideline.

14. Allow the watercolors to dry completely, or heat set. Remove the painter's tape.

15. Stamp a greeting in VersaMark ink the Black color wash area. Heat emboss using White embossing powder. Note: Reduce warping during the heat embossing process by heating the back of the watercolor panel instead of the front.

16. Sketch in ribbon details as desired using a Black Copic Multiliner.

17. Erase any remaining pencil lines.

18. Add polka dots, circles, and dash lines to a few of the presents using a White Gel Pen.

19. Create a top-folding 4?" x 5" card from White cardstock. Trim the watercolor panel to fit the front of the card. Adhere the panel to the card using dimensional adhesive.

Tips & Tricks

? This is a simple idea with a great finished look... a fantastic place to start for a free-form, hand-painted card. The painting itself really can be as simple or as advanced as you want it to be! Think of all the painting techniques you've learned in class, and try them out with this design.

? Give this fun idea a try for holiday cards, as well as birthday cards. And don't forget to try adding fun, personalized details to your boxes, like polka dots, stripes, or even snowflakes.
