Curriculum Letter – Mrs Hamlin – Spring TermHappy New Year! We have a very busy term ahead and the children are extremely excited about our new theme ‘The Whizzpopping World of Dahl’ where we will be learning all about Cardiff Bay and comparing it with Aberdare.How can you help?Please read with your child as often as possible, 10 minutes a day is ideal. Reading books will be changed every week and need to be brought to school every day.Additionally, please help practise telling the time and using money in practical situations.The main focus of this terms work will be on the core subject areas.Literacy – We are continuing to focus on correct spelling and punctuation this term. I also hope that the majority of children will be receiving their pen licences this term. We will be reading James and the Giant Peach and writing stories set in a fantasy setting during the first half term. We will also be writing biographies of famous people linked to our theme such as Shirley Bassey and Roald Dahl. We will create a pamphlet about Cardiff Bay, incorporating our I.T skills and we will write explanation texts about how the barrage works.Maths –We are continuing to practise 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables in class. We are also adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. We will be learning to tell the time accurately and solving time problems, as well as continuing our work with 2d and 3d shapes and money.Science – Mrs Walters will be teacing science on Monday afternoons. This term we are discussing keeping our planet safe, recycling and making promises to help look after our planet.History/Geography – We will be covering many geography skills this term when we learn about Cardiff Bay and how it is different to Aberdare. We will be using map skills to locate Cardiff Bay and using grid references to find what the land is used for in Aberdare and Cardiff Bay. We will learn about the arts and culture in Cardiff Bay. The children are also keen to learn about the history of Cardiff Bay and they want to know if Cardiff Bay was bombed during the war.RE – Our value this term is Perserverance. We have also learned about Epiphany and we will learn about other important events such as St. Dwynen day, St. David’s Day, Shrove Tuesday, Lent and Easter. Expressive Arts –The children will be learning about a local artisit Martyn Evans and looking at work by Rhiannon Roberts who has done some wonderful art work about Cardiff Bay. We will learn about the different instruments in the orchestra and listen to music performed by BBC National of Orchestra of Wales. We will create music as a class orchestra.Welsh – Children’s Welsh oracy is progressing very well. We will continue with our daily Helpwr Heddiw sessions and we will be completing more reading and writing. We hope to make links with a partner school so that children can have a pen pal in Welsh. PE - This term our PE will be on a THURSDAY afternoon by Mr Morgan. Please can you ensure your child brings their PE kit in a bag, PE kits are not to be worn to school. If your child does not bring their kit they will not be able to take part in the lesson.Homework will continue to be given on a Thursday to be returned by the following Tuesday. As last term, we wll have a mix of maths and literacy homework, some to be completed online. The children are welcome to use Giglets and Hwb throughout the week at home.
