Section 4: the New Madrid District Earthquakes

[Transcribed by Tara R. Barrett, 1999, p. 1 found at ]

This story sets up the court documents found in Breckinridge County, Kentucky

In 1811 and 1812 the inhabitants of New Madrid District experienced a series of the most terrific earthquakes that have ever occurred on the American continent.

The center of the disturbance seems to have been in the vicinity of Little Prairie, as it was there the greatest damage done. Mr. Godfrey Lesieur, then a boy living at that place, wrote a description of phenomena, from which the following is condensed: The Earthquakes spent their greatest force in Pemiscot County. the first shock occurred at 2 o'clock A. M., on December 16, 1811, and was very hard, shaking down log houses, chimneys, etc. It was followed at short intervals by comparatively slight shocks until about 7 o'clock in the morning, when a rumbling noise was heard in the west resembling distant thunder, and in an instant the earth began to shake and totter to such a degree no one was able to stand or walk. This lasted about one minute. At this juncture the earth was observed to be rolling in waves of a few feet in height, with a visible depression between. Soon the swells were seen to burst, throwing upward large volumes of water, sand, and species of charcoal, some of which was covered with a substance having a sulphurous odor. When these swells burst, large fissures were formed, running north and south, parallel with each other for miles. The rumbling noise and the waves seemed to come from the west and travel eastward. Slight shocks were felt at intervals until January 23rd, 1812, when the country was visited by another earthquake, equally as violent as the first, and characterized by the frightful results. Then it was the cry arouse among the people, "Sauze qui peut!" ("Who save can"), and all bet two families left the country.

After the terrible shock of the 7th of January slight ones were from time to time experienced, until the 7th of February, when another very severe one, having the same effects as the other occurred, and caused great injury to land, in forming more extensive fissures, sinking high lands, and forming it into lakes, and making deep lake high land.

It is a remarkable fact that so few casualties occurred during these terrible convulsions. Among the citizens there were but two deaths. Mrs. Lafont died from fright, and Mrs. Jarvis received an injury from the fall of a cabin log, from which she died a few days later.

Page 161, The most important settlement, south of New Madrid, was at the big Portage of the St. Francois, as it was designated at that time, near what is now Portageville in New Madrid county. At this point, from a very early period in the history of the country, a portage had been established between the waters of the St. Francois and the Mississippi. Here canoes and pirogues, came up the St. Francois and Little rivers through Portage Bay, and cargoes, were carried across the land to waters connecting with the Mississippi. Among the French-Canadian voyageurs who lived here and secured grants, we note Joseph Hunot, who was lieutenant in the militia, and an early resident of New Madrid. His name is signed as witness to many document from 1791 to 1799. Toussaint Godair or Goder, who at one time resided in the Cape Girardeau district, and afterward in New Madrid, had a concession here.

On open lake near Portage Bay, and connecting with it, Major Jean Baptiste Olive made a settlement in 1797. He was a native of France, and one of the few emigrants residing in upper Louisiana who directly immigrated to the country from France. He first settled at New Madrid, where he was sub-lieutenant of militia, and baker in the army; was also a merchant, and in 1805 a justice of the peace; his wife, Anne Victoire Auguste, owned a number of tracts of land in this section. Benoni Patterson opened the first farm on the road between Little Prairie and New Madrid. John Patterson, From Kaskaskia, in 1802, and Hiram Patterson lived in the neighborhood at the same time.

Five miles north of New Madrid, on the highest point of lat St. Marys, Benjamin Myers, a carpenter, leased a plantation, and probably lived there, though he was a resident of the village in 1793. [Benjamin Myers, German, native of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, son of Jacob Myers and Helen Ventricle; in 1804 married Rebecca Patterson, native of New Brunswick, daughter of Benjamin Patterson and Betsy Safford.

Six miles north of the village Harry Rauls had a clearing; he was a native of Kentucky and a slave owner. Seven and one half miles north, Augustine Trudell lived in 1794, but afterwards sold his place to Jean Baptiste Barsaloux (1796) and removed to the Arkansas district, where he secured a concession from Francisco Casso y Luengo, commandant of the Arkansas post in 1802. In 1802 Richard and Daniel Hazel lived ten miles north of New Madrid, and Robert Quimby, a blacksmith of Tywappity in 1801, opened a farm at the foot of the hills, now in Scott County, in 1803. His nearest neighbors were John, Charles, and Jacob Friend.

Three miles northwest of New Madrid, and west of this lake St. Marys, Jean Baptiste Racine, dit L'Empeigne, lived on late St. Isidore in 1793. He was a native of France. Benjamin Patterson settled on a grant on lake St. Isidore in 1797.

History of Missouri

Lieut. Spears was shot dead through the forehead, and his death was much lamented, as he had proved himself the most active and intrepid officer engaged. John Patterson was wounded in the fight, and some others were also wounded behind the battery. Having failed in the object for which it was designed, the battery was abandoned after sundown. Our hope all along had been that the Indians would emerge from their covert and attempt to retreat to where we supposed their canoes were left, some three or four miles distant, in which case we were firmly determined to rush upon them and endeavor to cut them totally off. The men generally evinced the greatest bravery through the whole engagement.

Judith Compton (#14) daughter of William Compton

14. Judith Compton daughter of William Compton and Mary Pate was born March 4th, 1822 in Kentucky. Her life is a bit of a puzzle prior to her marriage to Ralph Beavin Walker but after that it’s a piece of cake. With the data gathered for William Compton and the stories previously written I believed that Judith Compton was the daughter of William and that she had married Ralph Beavin Walker. So I am still hopeful that what I have put together is correct. William Compton did not name all of his children in his will, which was a common practice and unfortunate.

Judith Compton first married unknown Taul [other researchers show Judith’s first husband as Levi Thomas Taul]

They had one child:

48 i. William B. (about 1841- about 1893)

[If it is correct that Levi Thomas Taul was the husband of Judith Compton, this Levi Taul was the brother of Major Benjamin Muffett Taul that married the widow of Henry H. Compton. Shown previously]

Breckinridge County Early Reconstructed Marriages in Volume I, page 238; January 21, 1845, Ralph Walker to Mrs. Judith Taul, by James Taylor.

On January 21, 1845 when Judith was 24, she second married Ralph Beavin Walker, son of Henry Hardin Walker (7 Oct 1797-24 Oct 1869) & Elizabeth Beavin (6 Apr 1797-), in Breckinridge County, Kentucky.

In 1853 Ralph B. Walker was the bondsman for the marriage of Jesse Copher Taul to Jonathan Ann Taul. Jesse was the son of Major Benjamin Muffet Taul. Jesse Copher Taul was Judith Compton’s nephew.

Ralph Walker and Judith Compton had the following children:

49 i. Henry C. (1846- ................
