Project overview

Vertical Access was retained by Urbahn Architects to assist with a New York City Fa?ade Inspection Safety Program (FISP) inspection and to perform a hands-on investigation to inform the preparation of repair recommendations and documents.

Building description

The main building of Harry S Truman High School is a 7-story, steel-frame building that is rectangular in plan with a large courtyard. Designed in 1970, it is set in the middle of an assemblage of buildings that also includes two middle schools, two elementary schools, and a gymnasium that serve the Co-op City neighborhood of the Bronx. The complex was designed by Moore & Hutchins, the partnership of John C. B. Moore and Robert S. Hutchins, which individually and collectively specialized in the design of academic buildings at both the primary and secondary levels. Harry S Truman High School and the surrounding

buildings are distinguished by large pre-cast panels at the spandrels, with brick corners and piers and horizontal bands of dark-colored aluminum windows.

Scope of work ? Performed hands-on investigation of the exterior masonry

of four masonry facades from the fifth to seventh floors inclusive. ? Documented representative and notable existing conditions with digital photographs hyperlinked to annotated condition drawings.
