Law – LLM Harvard Law School 1 year

Candidates must have completed their undergraduate law degree by the start of the LLM.

Business – MBA Harvard Business School 2 year

Candidates are advised to apply for the first tranche of places in the autumn; the School may fill most of its places from this first of three application phases.

School of Public Health – Masters in Public Health 1 year

Candidates have to have completed their MBChB (or equivalent) by the start of the MPH. An intercalated BSc is not sufficient.

Policy Programmes at the Harvard Kennedy School (for reasons of history listed as Government on current – 2013 – Harvard website)



Master in Public Policy (MPP) – 2 year; work experience is not required but candidates are preferred to have at least 2 years of full-time professional experience.

Master in Public Administration in International Development (MPA/ID); strongly prefer at least 2-3 years of work in development, preferably in a developing country.

Master in Public Administration (MPA2) – 2 year; 3 years’ professional work experience at the time of application required.

Mid-Career MPA (MC/MPA) – 1 year, usually with a summer school beforehand; candidates should have 7 years’ relevant, full- time professional work experience by 30 June of their enrolment year. Sometimes people have taken part-time further degrees over this time which has kept them within the Kennedy & Knox eligibility window.

School of Education – EdM 1 year

The Ed School offers a wide range of 1 year Master’s programmes. Its typical applicants have worked in many fields, not just as teachers.

School of Divinity – MTS 2 year

MDiv 3 year

Graduate School of Arts & Sciences

This is a vast umbrella covering many departments and smaller schools. Apart from those listed below, the Master’s (AM) is an integral part of the PhD (degree) programme and cannot be taken as a free-standing option.

AM Regional Studies 2 year

This is offered under 3 fields: China & S E Asia; Middle East; Russia, Ern Europe & Central Asia.

Wide range of options and scope to craft a very personal programme of study.

AM History of Science 1 or 2 year

The two-year option enables wider choice of modules but degree can be done in 1 year.

Statistics – AM 1 year

Forestry – MFS 1 year + previous summer doing paid work in Harvard forest

Dept of Nr Eastern Languages & Civilisations expectation 1 year but can do over two

AM offered in 4 fields: History & Culture of Islamic World; Ancient Nr Ern Studies; Jewish History & Culture; comparative studies across two or more of these fields. NB All three have many sub-fields; research via GSAS>Nr Ern Langs & Civilisations>graduate progs

(Advanced reading knowledge of French or German mandatory)

School of Engineering & Applied Sciences (under GSAS)

- M Eng 1 year

- SM 4 year practical programme

Graduate students may work towards a Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Engineering (M.E.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in one of four subjects—Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering Sciences.

Those students earning a degree (ie PhD) in Engineering Sciences can specialize in one of the following areas:

Engineering Sciences: Bioengineering

Engineering Sciences: Electrical Engineering

Engineering Sciences: Environmental Science and Engineering

Engineering Sciences: Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering
