Mahurin Gift Supporting The World Council for Gifted and Talented Children Fact SheetSarah Jo Mahurin Mutter attended the Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students (SCATS) from 1990 to 1993 and the Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth (VAMPY) from 1993 to 1996. She was a counselor in the summer camps from 1998 to 2000. Before that, she volunteered at The Center one summer. She was a founding member of the Alumni Association for The Center for Gifted Studies. In addition, Sarah Jo keynoted the Duke Talent Identification Program Kentucky State Recognition Ceremony in 2008.Pete Mahurin has served on The Center’s Board of Advisors since its inception in February 2001.Pete and Dixie Mahurin created the Mahurin Professor of Gifted Studies, one of the few endowed chairs in gifted studies in the nation. In addition, they established the Sarah Joanna Mahurin Athletic Scholarship. Graduating valedictorian of Bowling Green High School, Sarah Jo was a Governor’s Scholar and a National Merit Finalist. Graduating magna cum laude, Sarah Jo earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Harvard in 2002. She is completing a Ph.D. in American Literature at Yale. She plans to teach at the collegiate level. Her husband, Matt Mutter, teaches English Literature at Bard College in New York state.Dixie, a WKU alumna, has served the needs of WKU’s student-athletes for more than 25 years. Dixie is WKU’s coordinator of athletic-academic support, who, with a staff of five, aids student-athletes in their efforts to graduate by helping track degree programs, schedule classes, hire tutors and monitor study hall sessions. Dixie works directly with both the men’s and women’s basketball programs. WKU is one of only three Sun Belt Conference schools to exceed the NCAA required 925 Academic Progress Report Rate (APR) in every men’s and women’s sport. In seven of the past eight years, men’s basketball posted a 100 percent graduation success.Since the 1960s, WKU alumnus Pete has been with Hilliard Lyons, a Kentucky-based brokerage firm with approximately 1,100 employees whose history dates back to 1854. Mahurin serves as Board Chair of HL Financial Services, LLC, the parent organization of Hilliard Lyons Trust Company and Hilliard Lyons brokerage firm. He is a Board Member of Houchens Industries, Gray Construction, First & Farmers National Bank, FNB Bank, and the Cecilian Bank. Pete serves on The Center for Gifted Studies Advisory Board, the Finance Advisory Council, the Campaign Cabinet, and WKU’s Board of Advisors. He served for several years on the WKU Foundation Board and as Chairman for three years, Campaign Cabinet (Investing in the Spirit Campaign), and Friends of Women’s Studies Group. Dixie is a member of the Hospice Board of Directors and the WKU Sisterhood. She served eight years on the Library Board of Trustees and is past-president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Outstanding Women Educators.Pete was chosen as the Volunteer of the Year for the WKU Foundation at the 2001 Summit Awards. In 2003 both Pete and Dixie were honored as Volunteers of the Year for The Center for Gifted Studies at the Summit Awards. They received the Distinguished Service Medal in 2003. The Mahurins are active members of Pleasant Union Baptist Church in Brownsville, Ky. ................
