Junior Varsity – Speed and Accuracy – Passage 1

A-Haunting We Will Go 5

Doors suddenly slam shut. 4

29 Shades fly up. Footsteps are 5

heard in the night. Is a strong wind the 9

cause? Or is the place haunted? 6

Who Are They? Experts who 5

study these things believe that ghosts are the 8

35 cause. Most experts say a ghost is 7

the spirit of somebody who may have died young, 9

or maybe met a sudden death. 6

Arthur Myers is a ghost expert who 7

travels around the country visiting 5

haunted places. One house he 5

51 visited is called the McLoughlin 5

House in Oregon City. The house 6

is now a museum, and people come from all 9

over to visit it, hoping to see or hear 9

the ghosts who live there. 5

A small boy is just one of the ghosts 9

14 haunting the house in Oregon. 5

The Dead and the Restless The 6

McLoughlin House was built in 1845 6

and owned by a doctor. Another old 7

house is right next door, and in the 8

middle are the graves of the doctor and his 9

wife. According to people who have worked there, ghosts 9

93 go back and forth between the houses. Mary 8

Slaughter was a tour guide and used 7

to hear footsteps when nobody was 6

upstairs; smelled pipe smoke when 5

nobody was smoking. Shades would fly 6

up for no reason. Can ghosts be the 8

explanation when strange things happen in 6

other houses? 2

Junior Varsity – Speed and Accuracy – Passage 2

A Lost Button 3

Nancy Wilson worked there, too. 5

She told a story about a special 7

44 button missing from one worker's sweater. 6

Everybody looked for it. All of a 7

sudden, it came rolling across the floor. 7

Nancy and Mary think a boy ghost did 8

it. 1

The boy "lives" next door and 6

has been blamed for other things, too. 7

Tools left in one house often turn 7

50 up in the other. A child visitor is 8

sure he saw the boy ghost and asked a 9

tour guide, "Is that little boy 6

supposed to be downstairs all by himself?" 7

Some people who buy old houses to live 8

in complain that ghosts live there, too. A 8

woman in California decided to do 6

something about it. She was tired of waking up 9

at night to strange sounds, so she 7

asked an expert for advice. The 6

101 expert said she should talk to the spirit and ask 10

it to stop. The woman stood in the middle 9

of a room and said, "Listen, this is my 9

house. I love it here, and I'm not 8

moving out. So all this nonsense has 7

to stop!" From that time on, she noticed a 9

change. The strange noises stopped. 5

The Company You Keep Someday you 6

may visit an old house, or 6

decide to live in one. There's nothing 7

44 to be afraid of. Remember, you can 7

talk to ghosts. Tell them to go or stay, 9

whatever you please. Maybe you'll even 6

enjoy their company. 3
