Aloha to the End of Summer! Members Perform in Luau Themed Talent Show

Last Friday we said goodbye to an amazing summer by sharing all of our members' amazing talents at our end of summer Talent Show! The luau themed event featured a production of "Spongebob The Musical," which was performed by our very own Constellation Company. Members from all groups either sang, danced, performed magic tricks, or rocked out in a rock band. The fun-filled afternoon ended with our staff, members, and parents dancing the Cha-Cha Slide together!

Thank you to our dedicated team who helped make the Talent Show and musical production possible and who helped make this event an incredible one to share with families and friends!

Shaquille O'Neal Helps BGC Get Back to School Ready!

On August 5, 2019, Boys & Girls Clubs from all over the Los Angeles County gathered at Alexander Hamilton High School for a Back to School Event hosted by former NBA Champion Shaquille O'Neal! Thanks to the generous donations from partners such as Amazon and Zappos, each participant received a backpack full of school supplies and brand new shoes. It was a great event that allowed our members to interact with other Clubs. Thank you Shaq for supporting Boys & Girls Clubs!

2019 National Keystone Conference Keystone Teens Attend Conference in Florida

At the beginning of summer in June, six members from our Keystone Clubs at Canoga Park High School, Cleveland Charter High School, and Chatsworth High School

attended the National Keystone Conference in Orlando, Florida. This year's Conference featured motivational speakers, informative sessions, performances by teens from other BGC Clubs, and an awards ceremony to recognize the National Projects and the Keystone organized events that were planned throughout the year! Our Keystone Club's very own "Pawsitivity" project, which was a monthly event that featured therapy dogs and offered various mental health resources, was honored as one of the top three Keystone National Projects in the entire nation! Additionally, Cleveland High School student Daniela Prado was nominated to be a part of the National Keystone Steering Committee to help plan next year's Conference and lead seminars.

When asked about her experience, Daniela stated, "From being inspired by the guest speakers to learning about natural disasters, every session gave everyone a new point of view and set of skills. I was even given the chance to lead a session along with other Keystone Clubs on climate change in my community." Fernando Perez, a senior at Canoga Park High School, added, "The Keystone Conference was an unforgettable experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with my fellow Keystoners while also meeting others from many different areas. The sessions were very informative and engaging and they inspired me to try to do more to help my community."

The Conference ended with a surprise trip to Disneyworld for all Keystone members in attendance! The experience was enriching and eye-opening for our teens and we cannot wait to see them grow as leaders in their schools and communities!

SAFETY POLICY

The safety of our members is our #1 priority. We do mandatory and ongoing background checks on all potential staff and volunteers, each of whom must follow strict policies and procedures.

We also offer routine staff training to build a culture of safety. WVBGC employs a

zero-tolerance policy for any disregard of our procedures. If any issues or concerns are brought to our attention, we contact the police and Child Protective Services immediately. We incorporate the national BGCA safety standards and work with other community organizations to consistently strengthen our safety programming. Each day we work with kids to reinforce their knowledge of self-defense and safety knowledge. We listen closely to make sure that their voices are always heard. If you have any safety-related concerns or questions, please contact your local Club or our CEO, Tim Blaylock HERE. Additionally, the national organization offers a 24-hour hotline, 1-866-607-SAFE. They have also developed a Child Safety Port.

Creating a Mile of Change 2019 Annual Mile of Quarters

On Saturday, July 27, 2019, we held our Annual Mile of Quarters event at the Westfield Topanga Mall. Club members, staff, volunteers, board members, dignitary aides, and community supporters gathered together to help lay down a full mile of quarters on a long, colorful carpet. The money raised from the event will continue to support our Club's programs and services for needy youth. Check out some photos and highlights from the event below!

When School is Out, Clubs are In! A Message From CEO/President, Tim Blaylock

Dear Friends, We have made it to the end of another successful Summer Camp season and we have reached the beginning of another school year! I would first like to thank my hardworking staff that made this summer one to remember. Your care and dedication for our members is greatly appreciated! As families prepare to go back to school this fall, we want to remind them of the importance of planning safe and productive after-school activities. Each day, thousands of West San Fernando Valley kids and teens leave school with no place to go, putting them at risk for being unsupervised and unsafe. Our Club is a safe haven where youth are empowered to excel in school, become good citizens, and lead healthy and productive lives on their path to Great Futures. Last year we had a total of over 3,030 youth registered in all of our Club sites with an average daily attendance of around 600. This year we are expecting more children to fill our branch locations. The Club strives to provide kids with positive and productive outlets for their energy with programs such as after-school tutoring, character and leadership development, healthy lifestyles, athletics, and art. The Club is committed to providing the best possible experience for all participants regardless of race, color, religion, or gender. We welcome YOU to our Club! Make it a great day for you and your child today!

Respectfully,

Project Learn Corner Keeping the Brain Busy During Summer!

The Summer Program has officially come to an end and our members definitely

kept their minds busy and active during Summer Brain Gain! Along with our Project Learn Coordinator and other summer staff, our members covered many different topics such as U.S. history, health and wellness, cultural awareness, underwater life and conservation, and Hawaiian culture. The kids enjoyed themed activities and had the opportunity to go on fun field trips to places such as the Japanese Garden! Our Great Futures Program at the high school sites is getting ready to kick off the new Fall Semester with an interactive welcome week for new and returning members. The High School staff has been working tirelessly to prepare for another successful semester and school year. We are excited for what is ahead of us and all of the goals that we can reach!
