9a Currently, there is no written SOP in the department for safe storage, handling, usage and disposal of hazardous substances. Disposal of hazardous substances are handled centrally through Materials Laboratory.

9b Updated inventory record and SDS of hazardous substances are placed near the storage cabinets in the laboratories.

9c Purchases of controlled and hazardous material must be reviewed by the Department approving staff before proceeding for acquisition. Chemical related purchases are reviewed by Prof. Lu Li and biological related purchases are reviewed by Prof. Lim Chwee Teck.

9d All hazardous substances are stored under lock and key. Persons who need to use hazardous substances are briefed and shown the SDS before they can use the hazardous substances.

9e Staff and students are regularly sent for training and refresher course on handling of hazardous substances. Two staff were sent recently for the Chemical Safety Refresher Training conducted by OSHE.

9f Chemical containers are properly labelled.

9g Trained staff will brief the students and research staff on the handling of hazardous chemicals and the necessary precautions to take. Refer to User Registration Form in A6-2.

9h When handling hazardous chemicals, laminar flow fumehoods are used.
