Abstract

This study focused on the natural elements in multi-family housing communities which would offer healing environments for improving residents' well-being therein. This study especially targeted public rental housing communities. For the data collection, the literature regarding healing environments was reviewed. Case studies mainly looked at natural environments in five public rental housing communities that received excellent rates from the G-SEED program within five years. This study defined the natural elements that are the trees, plants, water features, and light as the positive environmental factors as Ulrich(1991) suggested and also used the "natural space" concept from the Pattern Language by Christopher Alexander et al (1977). As a research method, the case study focused on the observation of environment behaviors based on the theory of supportive design that consisted of the sense of control, social support and positive distractions. The selected public rental housing is located in the area close to the transportation facilities, and the ecological environment of the waterfront space of the neighboring facilities around the community. Playgrounds, outdoor sports facilities, and walking paths were connected, but connectivity of space with natural elements was insufficient.
