COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an overview of health care issues for persons as they age. The focus will be on health promotion as person(s) age with discussion of concepts, research, and health promotion theories related to aging. Common health problems of the aging adult will be identified. Critical analysis of the current health environment will provide a format for discussion of common health problems and identification of strategies for health promotion and disease control in the elderly.

COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Analyze health promotion theories, concepts, and models that guide health care for the aging population in the United States.

2. Critique the positive and negative aspects of health care access for the aging population in the United States.

3. Analyze common health care issues in aging and discuss strategies for health promotion and disease control.

4. Identify current barriers to long-term care.

5. Compare and contrast the benefits and risks for the caregiver of the frail elder.

COURSE SCHEDULE – Web-Based Course

E-Learning (Sakai) is the course management system that you will use for this course. E-Learning (Sakai) is accessed by using your Gatorlink account name and password at . There are several tutorials and student help links on the E-Learning login site. If you have technical questions call the UF Computer Help Desk at 352-392-HELP or send email to helpdesk@ufl.edu.

It is important that you regularly and frequently check your Gatorlink account email for College and University wide information and the course E-Learning site for announcements and notifications.

Course websites are generally made available on the Friday before the first day of classes.

Web based Lecture, Discussions and Assignments:

This course uses web-based, asynchronous lectures and discussions. The Weekly sessions begin on Wednesday at 8am and end on the following Tuesday at 8pm.

- Please refer to the Evaluation Rubric for E-Learning Discussions.

- Discussion postings made after weekly deadlines will not be considered for evaluation.

- Assignments will have deadlines and Students must post completed assignments in the Assignment Drop box by the Assignment due date. Deductions of 5 points a day (beginning the day following the deadline) will occur for ALL late assignments. Please contact Dr. Sutton prior to a due date if there is an emergency that will prevent you from turning in the assignment by the deadline.

ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to participate in the activities and discussions as listed in the course syllabus and on the course web-site. Timeframes for the posting and receiving of materials are listed in the course materials on the course web-site.

ACCOMMODATIONS DUE TO DISABILITY

Each semester, students are responsible for requesting a memorandum from the Disability Resource Center to notify faculty of their requested individual accommodations. This should be done at the start of the semester.
