PolicyFatigue ManagementPolicy StatementACT Health is committed to the identification, assessment and management of fatigue related risks. Fatigue management is a shared responsibility between employers and employees in the workplace.Fatigue is:A state of impaired physical and/or mental performance and lowered alertness arising as a result of inadequate restorative sleep. It is a decreased capacity to perform mental or physical work, or the subjective state in which one can no longer perform a task. A state of reduced efficiency due to prolonged or excessive exertion. (Fatigue Risk Management System Resource Pack, Queensland Health).The long term health consequences of shift work and insufficient sleep can include cardio metabolic stress and impaired cognitive function and performance. ACT Health employs the following risk management approach to staff fatigue: Identifying the factors that contribute to and increase the risk of fatigueAssessing risks that may occur because of these hazardsControlling or minimising the level of risksMonitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of control measuresPurposeThis policy is intended to provide overall direction to all areas within ACT Health in the proactive management of staff fatigue. This will occur through the provision of a safe working environment for staff, patients and others by reducing the incidence of staff fatigue to as low a level as reasonably practicable.
