This position complements and provides support to a dedicated team of clinical coders who strive daily to deliver quality inpatient coded data for the organisation. A key part of this role is ensuring implementation and understanding by all clinical coders of the Australian Coding Standards, consistency in coding practices, discussing changes and difficult cases with each other within the team, and working to ensure that the monthly coding deadlines are met.The position provides support for clinical coders, management, research and audit activities, and assists clinicians to better understand coding requirements, seeking clinician advice regards documentation concerns to code cases in an effort to code more accurately, and where documentation is not specific enough.A key part of the role is also a routine coding workload to maintain skills, and assisting in times of coder leave to maintain throughput. Reviewing and assisting team members with interpretation of the PICQ audit reports, responding to NSW Cancer Registry data queries and assisting with HAC coding reviews are also part of the role. Also supported are a busy Emergency Department, Coronary Care Unit, ESSU, Urgent and Planned Surgery, as well as a very large Outpatient workload.Accountabilities and Key Result AreasCoding Manager/Team Leader:Assists the Manager HIS & ICT by managing Coding Unit staff rosters and leave requests on a daily basis to ensure adequate coverage of service, and raises any concerns with the Manager HIS & ICT.Provides support to the clinical coders for the coding of difficult cases, to encourage consistency in coding practices, for interpretation of the Australian Coding Standards and for any systems issues.Maintains currency of knowledge regards coding systems and standards, and ensures that resources are requested and available within the Coding Unit to support accurate and timely coding.Processes a routine workload of coding to maintain own skillset, and to ensure throughput is managed to meet the monthly coding deadlines. Assist with clarification of Care Type issues with Patient Services.Reviews and assists team members with interpretation of PICQ reports as required, responds to the NSW Cancer Registry concerning inpatient data queries, and assists with HAC coding reviews when required.Works closely with the Clinical Information Manager and appropriate staff to ensure records are available to meet deadlines and make recommendation to the Manager regards documentation requirements, and discuss any record processing deficiencies with the Clinical Information Manager. Provides coded data reports from iPM, RAP and Health Roundtable Table systems, ensuring that ethical considerations and correct authorities are in place for requestors to receive this information.Actively participates in activities of the hospital’s Patient Care Quality Committee as required and including for HAC reviews and auditing purposes. Assists the Manager HIS & ICT to submit reports.Seeks input from the skilled clinical coder workforce and more widely where appropriate, to assist in making decisions concerning consistent coding and interpretation of requirements. Interacts appropriately with the Hunter New England District Coding Manager, other sites and the LHD regards educational opportunities and coding decisions, and follows CMN requirements.Seeks direction from the Manager HIS & ICT as appropriate and when needing assistance, and completes other tasks appropriate to the role and development.People and Culture:Practice in accordance with Calvary and relevant Government Health policies and procedures, the position description, Code of Conduct and industrial agreements. Patient confidentiality must be protected at all times.Assists the Manager HIS & ICT and Coding Team in a helpful and positive way to provide an efficient and effective clinical coding service for the hospital.Service Development & Innovation:Reviews work practices to determine the most efficient methods of work and discusses with Manager HIS & ICT ideas for development or innovation. Actively participates in HNE Local Health District Coder Meetings, Vendor discussions and liaises with professional colleagues to share ideas and determine the best solutions to difficult coding questions.Reviews and develops local procedure manual for coders and clinicians, and identifies new resources.Seeks learning opportunities relevant to identified needs and professional development.Regular performance discussions occur with Manager HIS & ICT and a formal annual review is conducted.Wise Stewardship:Uses valuable clinical coding skills and expert knowledge obtained through dedicated learning and experience to assign codes accurately and to code comprehensively.Refers to Coding Team, Manager HIS & ICT and accesses other approved resources and people as appropriate to perform work to high professional and personal standards.
