Course Title: HCA 101 – Health Care Administration in Action

(3 Units)

Day and Time: Monday and Wednesday, 9:30-10:45 AM

Catalog Description

This course offers students opportunities to learn about health administration careers by hearing from and interacting with health care managers working in a variety of organizations. Letter grade only (A-F).

Expected Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

• Identify the basic service and program elements in the continuum of health care.

• Define the major health care professions and the role of health care administrators within them.

• Differentiate the roles of clinicians and managers in a variety of health care organizations.

• Identify skills and competencies required for various health administration jobs.

• Know about interactions amongst health care administrators.

Methods of Presentation

The course is taught primarily through lectures by the faculty and guest lecturers who are health administration professionals working in the community. You are expected to complete assignments before the class session, and be prepared to discuss them. If you have trouble understanding what you read or hear, please ask for clarification in class or make an appointment with me to discuss the problem area(s).

Student Assignments and Grading

A. Class Participation and Questions – 15%. Attendance will be taken. Faculty and guest lectures will be more meaningful if students ask questions and offer comparative information. Students are to prepare a list of 3 questions for each day so that they will be prepared to participate in class discussions.

B. Career Tests – 10%. Complete the career tests and submit a one-page summary of what you learned about yourself.

C. Interview – 20%. Interview a health care administrative practitioner or a professional association representative. Write a report on the interview (minimum 1,500 words).

D. Resource Search and Paper – 25%. Students will prepare a paper (minimum 2,000 words; maximum 4,000 words) on one of the health professional career options discussed in class, including coverage of the following topics:

✓ Role in the health service system

✓ Educational preparation

✓ Credential and licensing requirements

✓ Personal qualities essential for success

✓ Advancement (administrative/management) opportunities within the profession

✓ Numbers and most common employment sites

✓ Professional association: Purpose, primary activities, professional development opportunities

E. Group Project and Presentation – 20%. Collaborate with other class members on a career building component (such as networking, mentors, communication skills) and its application in health care and present the findings to the class.

F. Professional Association Event – 10%. Attend one professional health care administration association event. A list of health care administration organizations with links to their websites is available at: .

Cheating and Plagiarism

Please be aware of and ensure that your behavior conforms to the University Policy; as contained the California State University, Long Beach Policy Statement 85-19, dated December 13, 1985.

Performance Expectations and Deadlines

Assignments are due on the date specified. Late assignments lose 20% of the points available for each day past the deadline. The Final Exam will not be accepted after the Final Exam date/time.

Withdrawal Policy.

Withdrawal after 2nd week and before final 3 weeks “permissible for serious and compelling reasons:” instructor will evaluate student withdrawal requests on a case by case basis.
