How to Continue Life During an Epidemic

The PCC News Monthly Magazine is keenly aware of how uncertainty is effecting the lives of our friends and neighbors, those in business and those needing products and services during this time.

We suggest our advertisers assess and set up assurances for customers to feel safe from contagion by communicating the rigorous effort to provide disinfected offices, shops, equipment and products, plus the restructure of conducting business on a personal level with arranging appointments to reduce contact with other customers, attention to staff health, and offering pick up and/or delivery of products, food, and more.

We realize this is a monumental task to stay open for business, but serving customers with respect for their safety and yours will not only fulfill the necessary products and services they need, it will ease the fears of both sides losing to this epidemic.

We want to help everyone stay healthy.

How YRMC is Protecting You During Covid-19

Your health and wellbeing are always our most important priority. Yavapai Regional Medical Center has a strong legacy of caring for the most vulnerable members of our community and this moment is no different.

As our healthcare teams continue to prepare for and track the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID19) in Arizona and across the country, we want to share a few details to help you stay healthy and informed.

Out of an abundance of caution, YRMC has placed restrictions on access to our hospital locations in Prescott and Prescott Valley. Patients must now access both locations from the main entrance at the front of each hospital. On the East Campus in Prescott Valley, patients can still access the BreastCare Center, Family Birthing Center and Infusion Center through their main entry points. Please also note that the main entrance for both Emergency Departments will remain open for patient use. All other access points will be restricted.

To help protect the health and safety of our patients and staff, we ask all visitors to please STAY HOME. We realize that special circumstances exist and in these situations we ask that you please call for any restrictions before you visit.

In the coming days, you may notice large tents being constructed on the campus of YRMC West in Prescott and YRMC East in Prescott Valley. These tents are precautionary in nature and are being installed should we need additional space to care for patients who present with flu or respiratory symptoms. Please don't be alarmed. We are only taking proactive steps to be ready should the need arise for more isolation space.

We are committed to maintain access to the healthcare services you need, and no plans have been made at this time to restrict elective or non-essential procedures. We will provide information if this changes at any time in the future and we encourage you to please discuss your options with your doctor.

We are cancelling or postponing many of our community events and classes until we feel it is safe to resume our normal community outreach activities. If you participate in classes or support groups at YRMC, please check with your event organizer before coming to an event.

We are proud of our legacy of care and continue to work closely with our community partners to meet your needs. Your health and wellbeing are an inspiration to all of us.

What can you do to keep your community going? Although many businesses will be closed, please call your favorite restaurant and order meals for pick up. If you have a household emergency, there will be service businesses open...don't hesitate to call them. Our local medical teams needs support. Check online for items they need and donate! Be a good neighbor. Check in to see they are well.

The Herbalist - Relieving Stress for Better Health

Hello friends, this is a difficult time in our country and community. I write this as the Covid virus news is hitting a fevered pitch. People are arguing over who is right, social media is blowing up with so much information that is contradictory and exchanges are heated. Not to mention, grocery stores are emptying out and parents wonder how to take care of their children who are now out of school for an indeterminate amount of time. Grandparents, who are more likely in a higher risk group may be taking care of those children. This is an uncertain and anxiety provoking time.

I am simply your neighborhood Herbalist, not the CDC or WHO. I am an educator who works with children who, will most likely not become ill but, may be unknowing carriers, and a resident in an area with higher than average amount of seniors living here. I admit, that increases my chances to be in contact with the virus but, I will say that I'm glad I'm not in a busier or more crowded area, just one more reason to love small towns. I can't offer medical advice but, what I can do is to make some suggestions about reducing anxiety and stress levels.

Stress increases cortisol levels in the body, which in turn, wreaks havoc on the immune system.

Staying healthy and sane in these times require a functioning immune system that will help to guard you from nasty pathogens. I am not telling you not to worry, I'm just encouraging you to eliminate some stress and take care of yourself.

Take your dog for a walk or take your neighbor's dog. Fresh air and sunshine are wonderful ways to lift your heart. Meditate, do yoga, tai-chi or qigong, all wonderful ways to improve flexibility and reduce stress. Check in with your friends and family by phone or even Skype to hear the voices and see the faces of your loved ones. Work on your yard and gardens. Soil actually has healthy antibodies in it so get your hands dirty. Drink soothing herbal teas.

Chamomile, Lemon balm and Lavender are among some of the herbs that help reduce stress.

Make sure you get plenty of rest. Read that book that is sitting on your table. Get your mind off the news and angry people, read the comics. Share love.

In practical matters, please wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Soap and water are more than enough. If out in public, use hand sanitizer until you can get home. Avoid large crowds and cover your mouth when needed. Do I sound like your mother yet?

But perhaps, the most important thing we can do during this time is to show compassion to our fellow humans. Smiles and kind words are some of the best medicines out there.

A Taste of Wine

Happy April!

Tax Day (this year, April 17th) is almost here!

Hopefully you are anticipating a refund and getting back some extra cash to splurge on the finer things in life--namely wine. Here are a few reasonably priced wines that you might enjoy. 1. Chateau Ste Michelle Chardonnay Indian Wells (Columbia Valley, Washington); $15. This Chardonnay delivers pineapple, butterscotch, and vanilla aromas with notes of brown sugar and spice. The Indian Wells Chardonnay is soft and rich yet maintains a beautiful elegance. One to sip with salads and seafood. 2. Plungerhead 2015 Old Vine Zinfandel (Lodi); $14. Generous fruit flavors make this wine a standout. There is very little new oak influence, and who needs it when the blueberry, blackberry and raspberry notes are so delicious and layered? A creamy tex-

ture and lingering finish complete the picture. Enjoy with a flank steak and veggies. 3. Fabre Montmayou 2017 Rose (Mendoza); $12. An easy mix of stone-fruit and orange aromas announces a clean ros? of fairly high quality. That assumption is confirmed on a citrusy, bouncy palate. Orange and underripe pineapple flavors finish sound and fresh. Shrimp with garlic lemon butter will pair beautifully with this wine. Happy tasting!
