Legislative Committee Overview:

The mission of the Indiana Organization of Nurse Executives (IONE) is to shape healthcare through innovative and expert nursing leadership. The core business of IONE is education, career development, member engagement, thought leadership, public policy and advocacy. In support of its mission and core business the IONE Board of Directors established a priority to increase awareness and knowledge of legislative process surrounding healthcare policy.

Legislative Committee Summary

A Legislative Podcast was established to bring awareness and education to Indiana Nurses to understand what is happening in the Statehouse relating to the health of Indiana, and how it impacts nurses and the patients we represent. The podcast highlights current legislative bills and explains how they may impact the health of the State of Indiana. Indiana’s most recent health rankings have dropped. Indiana is the 41st least healthy state and it’s time to make Indiana healthy.

IONE represented Indiana Nurses on the state and national level through testimony and advocacy. During the Legislative Session, IONE representatives advocated on behalf of Indiana Nurses with bills such as the Nurse Licensure Compact, Smoking Taxes and Cessation, and the APRN Bill. The IONE Legislative committee partners with the Indiana Hospital Association (IHA) for an Annual Advocacy Day. The IONE Legislative committee had two nurses represent Indiana Nurses on Capitol Hill with AONL Advocacy Day. IONE is represented by Mary Browning, IONE Executive Director, and the chair of the Legislative Committee, at the IHA Council on Government Relations.

Advocacy was highlighted on the IONE webpage by establishing a drop-down box on the opening page. The page is being updated by the Legislative Committee as new information regarding state and federal issues occur.

Respectfully Submitted,
