The Introduction

Dream Job Alert!!!!

You and your team have a chance to be hired by a famous celebrity to be their personal chef. You have always enjoyed food and love cooking, learning all of your cooking skills from your Granny.

There is a slight glitch though. Your celebrity has insisted that you prove your ability to prepare healthy foods for them. They are very particular about what foods they eat. Healthy eating is a priority to them.

Granny’s cooking skills were phenomenal, but you are not sure if what she taught you is considered “healthy”. What is healthy food? How do you know what foods you should eat? How much of each food group is recommended?

You have heard about the Food Guide Pyramid but really do not know what it means. You have heard that it changed in 2005, but you do not know how and why.

The most important question is how in the world are you going to show your celebrity that you know healthy food and can plan healthy menus?

Before you will be hired, you must prove your understanding of what makes food healthy and what kinds and amounts of foods your new client should eat every day. In addition, they want to see a week’s example of menus with recipes (at least 4) included.

The Task

Can you believe you could possibly be working for your favorite celebrity?

After you and your team (of four or five) choose a celebrity, you will divide up the tasks so that you can have the best information to present to your client. Your job is to sell your knowledge of nutrition and specifically, the nutrition needs of your dream celebrity.

Nutrition basics are all about these certain substances called nutrients that healthy foods are chock full of. There are also some substances in foods that are not healthy or good for your body. The Dietary Guidelines established by the USDA will help you understand what those things are.

Knowing about nutrients, the Dietary Guidelines, and knowing how to find out what foods your celebrity (and you) should be eating everyday, will help you plan a great presentation to help you land that dream job.

Your group will need to research this information and present it in either a PowerPoint, poster, video or any other presentation form you come up with, as long as you follow each step in the PROCESS below.

The Process

Groups of 4 or 5

1. First you must decide on the celebrity that you all agree on. I recommend that everyone puts their choice on a piece of paper and you draw the name out of a hat or bowl or purse or whatever.

It is important that you will be able to find the age, height, weight, and activity level of your celebrity.

Helpful hints- Athletes are the easiest to find that info about, although, I did find out that 19 year old country music star Taylor Swift is about 120 lbs, 5’11” and she works out by running, all through a simple Google search.

2. Find out what nutrients are. There are 6 main categories. What are the jobs and resources of each nutrient? That means, how does it help your body and what foods can you find them in?

3. What is your celebrity’s personal food pyramid plan? Use the information you found about your celebrity to discover the foods they should be eating. will help you here.

4. Gather information about healthy eating tips to present to your celebrity.

5. Create a week’s menu for your celebrity.

6. Find 4 healthy recipes to include in your menu.

7. Create someway to present all the information you learned and have gathered. You can use any presentation form you want or a combination of some. Power Points, posters, videos, samples of your recipes, or Photo Stories are some examples of what you can use for your presentation.

Listed below are all the jobs needed to complete this webquest. Put the name of each team member that will be doing each job so you know who is responsible for what. Turn a copy of this list in when you do your presentation.
