USING THE Look, Listen & Speak INTERACTIVE APPLICATION 3 How to Use This Application: Quick Tips for Getting Started

How to Use This Application

Look, Listen & Speak builds vocabulary in context and develops oral language skills through theme-based multimedia activities. Along with accompanying print materials, the program features this interactive application, which provides students with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic pathways to learn basic English vocabulary words. Students can explore virtual scenes for five different themes: At School, At Home, Keeping Healthy, My Family and Me, and My Community. Each theme includes scenes, a story, chants, and a song that provide vocabulary words in context. Each virtual scene displays words grouped together by categories, which include People, Places, Actions, and Things. Students can hear the word pronounced, match the isolated image to its location in the scene, and record their own voice saying the word. In addition, three games provide students with an engaging way to interact with the vocabulary and demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge.

Quick Tips for Getting Started

Log in to Evan-Moor Portals and select the icon for Look, Listen & Speak. The title of the individual module (At School or My Community, for example) will appear under the series icon.

The Home screen will appear with options to view different sections of the application: Scenes, Story, Chants and Song, or Games.

USING THE Look, Listen & Speak INTERACTIVE APPLICATION 4 Teaching Vocabulary: Scenes

Teaching Vocabulary

The Look, Listen & Speak application provides multiple pathways for students to acquire and practice essential English vocabulary. They can view a scene showing words and phrases in context. Students can hear a word spoken aloud, and then practice saying that word while recording their own voice. After students are familiar with the words, they can listen to or read the story, chants, and song, and also play the interactive games. This provides extra practice with words in a variety of contexts.

Scenes

Each Look, Listen & Speak title begins with interactive scenes where students can "see" the vocabulary in context and hear each word pronounced. From the Home screen, select the Scenes icon to view scenes for each theme. Each scene contains categories of vocabulary words in the tray at the bottom of the screen. (For example, in At School, the classroom scene shows vocabulary for three categories: People, Actions, and Things.) To activate the vocabulary words, select the category.

Each category of words has its own "active" layer of the scene. Only the vocabulary words displayed in the tray are active for that layer. Here, the words students and teacher are active for the People category in the Classroom scene.

Select an image in the tray to display the location of the target word in the scene.

USING THE Look, Listen & Speak INTERACTIVE APPLICATION 5 How to Use This Application: Interacting with the Scenes

Interacting with the Scenes The application has several interactive features to help students learn and use the vocabulary.

Selecting an image in the scene brings up a label with the vocabulary word displayed next to the object.

1. Select record. Say the vocabulary word. Select stop.

2. Select listen to hear the system voice say the word, followed by your recorded voice.

3. Select save to save your recording. Then, every time that vocabulary image is selected (in this case, books), you will hear your pronunciation of the word along with the system voice.

Select the microphone icon to display the recording screen. Students can listen to their recording and save the recording.
