Project Report: “Know Your Body”

Class BIO2312 Lecture/Lab Spring 2020

Name: Luisa

Sex: male/female: Female

Age: 19

Ethnicity: Hispanic

Height: 5’7”

Weight: 124 lbs.

BMI: 20.0

Underlying health conditions: None

Pulse:

73 beats per minute

The significance of this pulse rate is that is a normal pulse rate for a healthy human. A healthy heartbeat ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute, and the lower your beats per minute, the more efficient heart function you have.

Blood Pressure:

120/70

The higher your blood pressure is, the higher risk you have for health problems in the future. An average person has a blood pressure of 120/80. You want to have the systolic number be less than 120 and the diastolic number less than 80.

EKG:

[pic]

The second reading is my EKG and it was not done right because it appears that I am dead. Therefore, I have included another correctly done EKG reading. I have learned the importance of doing this reading correctly and the steps that need to be taken to get a good result. There must not be any technological device near, as it can affect the reading, which is what happened with mine. These readings measure the heart’s electrical activity. This test is important because it can diagnose any heart problems that an individual might have. It can detect any evidence of a coming heart attack, which is important for a person who is old or has high blood pressure. It can also portray any bad effects that a lung incapacity is having on the heart. In all, this test is important to take if a person wants to know the health of their heart.

Lung Capacity:

The normal lung capacity for a healthy female is 4200mL and for a male is 5700mL. Lung capacity is the air that is in your lungs after full inspiration. It is normal for the lung capacity to decrease as you age. Today there is a high risk of getting a virus called the corona virus. This virus causes respiratory failure, and in some cases it makes it impossible to breathe, especially for people who already have some kind of lung incapacity like asthma. Asthma is when a person’s airway becomes narrowed or inflamed, making impossible for air to travel down the airway. The airway tends to close at high lung volumes, which traps air in small airways, this results in a close total lung capacity for the individual. However, the FEV1 decreases in a person with asthma. It is important that your lung capacity is around 4200mL if you are a female and 5700mL for a male, and it can be found by taking spirometry test. People with any chronic pulmonary problems can then get the help they need to treat their illness.

Apps Used: sleep cycle

Sleep is an important period for our body. Our body uses this time to regenerate itself, by doing this it assures that we wake up relaxed and energetic for the next day. While we sleep our brain and body are busy working on different parts of our body. Many people neglect this important cycle, but it is important to give it attention. During sleep, the brain regenerates cells needed, and it disposes of waste and plays a vital role in the way we feel. Sleep has different stages. 1.) when you are awake. 2.) REM sleep. 3.) Light sleep, and 4.) Deep sleep. All these stages are important. Stage one is when you stay briefly awake. Then stage there is NREM sleep, which consists of stage 1 and 2, light sleep and deep sleep, and then comes REM sleep, and the whole cycle repeats all through the night.

In 20 years, I see the possibility of developing osteoporosis since my mother has it and it is hereditary. To make sure that I have a healthy life span when I get older, I must make sure that I do not fall because I can easily break a bone. My grandmother was healthy before she fell, after she fell, she broke her hip and could not get up from bed anymore, she developed Alzheimer and before that she became depressed because she used to be active. She watched people clean her and the fact that she could not lift a finger anymore led to depression.

I also see that my mom’s aunts had breast cancer, they all died from that. I would need to make sure to take an analysis every year for a mammogram to be sure that I do not develop any breast cancer.

I also have a history of Alzheimer from my mom’s side, my grandmother had it before she died. Smoking is something that I must avoid since it may contribute to this disease, and I must always keep my mind active. I can provide my mind with exercises, like math or puzzles.

I see that Both my grandparents and great grandparents had a long-life span of 90 years, so I can expect my parents to have that long-life span, as well as me. I can achieve this by keeping myself healthy and active because I know that both my grandparents and great grandparents had a healthy diet, which included vegetables and since they were poor, they could not afford eating outside their home. This meant that they never consumed bad fat, which must have contributed to their life span.

conclusion

In conclusion, I have learned that my body is something that I should take care of. Knowing my family history of disease gives me a better understanding of how better to take care of my body. For example, my mom suffers from osteoporosis and I know that the disease is hereditary. I also know that my grandmother had it and broke her hip easily. This unfortunate event is what basically led to her death. Lung capacity is also important because it measures the health of my lungs. It is important to know what my lung capacity is so I can know if I have any disease that I should treat. A person with asthma might have a close lung capacity to that of a healthy human, therefore doing the spirometry test can tell them if their FEV1 is low or high. A person with asthma will present a decreased FEV1. I have also learned that the EKG reading is important as it measures the electrical activity of my heart. It can detect any heart problems or any heart attack that might occur. Overall, there is various things in our body that we should constantly be checking like, the rate of our pulse, our blood pressure, which should be around 120/80. We should always keep in mind our health because if we do not do it from a young age, it will catch up to us when we become old.
