GOOD HEALTH--It’s Your Choice and YOUR FUTURE (more detailed version, but in progress)

STORY: For 30 years, Marcus and his wife had saved their money carefully for their dream vacation. They were planning to take an amazing trip around the world to see the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel tower and many others. They were looking forward to it with great anticipation. But, suddenly their dreams broke into pieces. Just a few weeks before his retirement, Marcus woke up with a sudden pain in his chest. An ambulance rushed him to the hospital. There he had to have triple bypass surgery. The surgery saved his life, but it wiped out all their families savings and he had to return to work with no hope of ever going on their dream vacation. What a tragedy! If only he had stopped smoking or exercises more or something. Now he sincerely wished that he had paid attention to the health principles that he had known.

Health. It’s something that we so often take for granted. We don’t realize how important it is until it’s gone. But, to understand a little of its importance talk to people who are close to dying. Queen Elizabeth said for example, “All my possessions for one moment of time”. Ask a person who is dying of cancer. Ask the parents of a child dying of leukemia. They you will begin to understand the importance of health. But, it is so much more than just living a long life. Health has a major impact on MANY areas of our lives. In Marcus’ case, his bad health ruined his careful financial planning of 30 years (CNN reported in 2006 that bad health costs the average person $2,200 per year). It affects our energy levels, our emotions, our moods, our judgement, the amount of stress we have in our lives and so many others. Here is a SHORT list of how health can affect your lives:

SOME BENEFITS OF GOOD HEALTH HABITS:

1. Adds many years to your life.

2. Helps you look more beautiful/handsome and younger.

3. Reduces aggression, crime and anger

4. Greatly reduces pollution/helps the environment

5. Helps solve the hunger problems in the world.

6. Helps you save money

7. Prevents many dangerous diseases.

8. Greatly reduces sicknesses (headaches, earaches, flu, stomachache, etc.),

9. Improves sexual enjoyment

10. Aids spiritual insight

11. It’s not cruel to animals.

12. Improves your attitude and helps avoid depression.

13. Helps reduce accidents.

14. Improves relationships.

15. Helps you lose weight easily.

16. Reduces pimples/acne.

17. Gives you higher energy.

18. Gives you better sleep.

19. Increases intelligence and grades by improving memory, etc.

20. Helps you think more clearly and make better decisions.

21. Give good health, mind and appearance to our babies/children.

22. Helps avoid mental diseases in children especially.

***The 22 health benefits and many more all come from these 10 ways to stay healthy: 1) Don’t smoke 2) Drink little or no alcohol 3) Eat a nutritious breakfast 4) Exercise & stay at a good weight 5) Be vegetarian or vegan 6) Get enough sleep 7) Avoid seafood 8) Avoid milk 9) Avoid sugar & 10) Have faith in God. Nearly all of these health practices come directly from the Bible or from its principles.

Health has an incredible impact both on the length of life and the quality of our lives every day as well as on our decision & judgment ability, our studying ability and many others. This is probably why God put so many wise principles of health in the Bible. These principles are also a great place to start in witnessing about the wisdom and love of God. Since health habits are so easy to observe, if we follow God’s health instructions and know a few things about the benefits, we will almost certainly have many opportunities to witness for God’s truth and bring people closer to him. God tells us that his laws are for our best life:

• “Those who respect the Lord will live and be satisfied, unbothered by trouble.” Proverbs 19:23 NCV

• “Keep my commands, and live…For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” Proverbs 4:4,22 (see also Matt. 19:17 & Proverbs 7:2)

• “If you respect the LORD, you will live longer; if you keep doing wrong, your life will be cut short.” Proverbs 10:27 (CEV)

• Psalms 19 tells us that God’s laws bring joy, give insight, are fair and are more desirable than GOLD! Queen Elizabeth would agree with that.

***add slide How many of you play computer games? I play them a little bit and when I play, I want to win. The best way to win is to figure out the rules and how to make points the fastest. Because I want to win as much as possible, I read the instructions carefully and I try to become friends with the best players and ask many questions to them to learn the best strategies and I often win because of that.

The same is true in business, education, sports, stocks, and almost every area of life. If you want to succeed, you need to learn and follow wise experts to avoid serious mistakes, stress, problems and failures. God is the greatest expert of all and he has put his truth in the Bible. Sometimes the world thinks it is smart. But, if we compare the best experts in history to the Bible, we can see many cases that show it is wisest to trust God and you will have benefits that no one else will have if you do. Here are a few examples:

1. ***add slide BLOODLETTING: For over 2,000 years, blood letting was the most common medical practice. The Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Mayans, Aztecs and many others all practiced it based on the idea that the blood was poisonous and too much of it could cause sicknesses. In the 19th century, doctors would recommend this and send people to barbers to have it done. This is why many barbershops have the red and white striped poles. The red represents blood. The white the tourniquet and the pole represents the stick patients would squeeze to make the veins stand out. George Washington, America’s first president asked to be bled heavily after he got a throat infection. Doctors drew 1.7 liters of blood out of him. That’s about 1/3 of the blood in our bodies. Do you think that helped him? Unfortunately it did not. He died from that throat infection probably because his body was too weak to fight against it without any blood. Did the Bible agree with this practice? It most certainly did not. The Bible states, “...for the life of the body is in its blood.” Leviticus 17:11 Unfortunately many people, even some Christians, trusted Greek medical theories above the Bible’s wisdom. If they had put the Bible in 1st place, many patients (such as George Washington) would not have died.

2. ***add slide SAFE DRINKING WATER - God forbade drinking from vessels or stagnant water that had been contaminated by coming into contact with a dead animal (Leviticus 11:33-36).. It is only in the last 100 years that medical science has learned that contaminated water can cause typhoid and cholera.

3. ***add slide DANGER OF ANIMAL FAT AND BLOOD: God warned people in Leviticus 3:17/ Leviticus 17:12, “You must never eat any fat or blood. This is a permanent law for you.” Why? Animal fat is the #1 cause of heart attacks and eating blood causes many infectious diseases. A common ritual in many religions in the ancient world was to drink blood. However, the Creator repeatedly told His people to abstain from blood (Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 3:17; Acts 15:20; 21:25). Of course, modern science reveals that consuming raw blood is very risky.

In these cases and MANY others, God’s way has proven to be far far better for our health and it was 1000s of years in advance of science. These are also very good examples to use with people to show that the Bible has been consistently right while science has often been wrong. The best wisdom of the world is sometimes right, but has often been wrong. It’s far healthier, wealthier and better for THIS life to honor God’s laws.

There is an enormous amount that you CAN do to give yourself good health and experience the above benefits and more. How do we know? Scientists compared the health of twins who had the same genes in the “Danish Twin Study”. They found that about 25 percent of how long we live is influenced by our genes. But, seventy-five percent, or the lion’s share, is determined by our lifestyle-something we choose.

So, Your Health is ~75%+ due to YOUR LIFESTYLE CHOICES!!

(referenced from National Geographic Magazine and )

***add slide Just changing a few habits can make a big difference. This report just came out from PLoS Medicine, news release, Jan. 7, 2008

“Researchers at the University of Cambridge and the Medical Research Council looked at 20,000 men and women, aged 45-79, who filled out a questionnaire about the four health behaviors…. People with four healthy lifestyle behaviors -- not smoking, physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption, and eating five servings of fruit or vegetables a day -- live an average of 14 years longer than people with none of those behaviors”.

It’s not just for our own health. It’s good for the planet too! For example, just one health habit, being vegetarian, can stop hunger, save the environment, add ~10 years to your life and stop cruelty to animals! Paul McCartney explains, "If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty."

LIFE SPAN: How old are you? 25, 50, 60? That’s your real age. But, you also have a health age. Your health age is the age of your body. You may be 25 years old, but your body is similar to a 35 year old person. Or you can be 70 and your body can be similar to a 50 year old. 50 would be your health age. Obviously, lower health ages are much better! Dr. Breslow, a professor from UCLA, did a study on 7,000 people for 9 years. He found out that if people followed 6-7 of these health habits, they would live 11.5 years longer on average (To find your health age, find your age and circle how many habits you follow. Then add (+) or subtract (-) the listed number from your real age. This is the age of your body.) What are the questions? Here they are:

Whether you are a believer or not, God’s health principles can benefit your life. Many actors, models and singers are now becoming vegetarians. They have become vegetarian because of health and also because it solves many problems such as these:

1) HUNGER: Vegfam says a 10-acre farm can support 60 people growing soybeans, 24 people growing wheat, 10 people growing corn and only two producing cattle. You need 10-17 kilograms of vegetables and plants to produce 1 kg of meat. Harvard nutritionist Jean Mayer estimates that reducing meat production by just 10 percent in the U.S. would free enough grain to feed 60 million people.

2) POLLUTION: 1 single hamburger equals 20 miles of fuel. “Because of deforestation to create grazing land, each vegetarian saves an acre of trees per year.” John Robbins, “The Food Revolution” “U.S. factory farms produced 1.4 billion tons of animal waste in 1996. This pollutes American water more than all other industrial sources combined”. Meat production destroys billions of acres of farmland and forests. See many other statistics about how meat damages the environment at:

3) SAVES WATER: A kilogram of wheat uses about 60 pounds of water. It takes 3-6000 pounds of water to make a kilogram of meat. Many people think there may be a war in the future over water

4) SAVES MONEY: Eating vegetarian is often much cheaper. It saves us from all the above problems and it also saves us a lot of money nationally and individually (think of less diseases, less resources needed to raise cattle, chicken, less farmland ruined, less transport costs, cheaper costs at the supermarket, etc.)

Albert Einstein wrote: “Nothing will benefit human health or increase the chances for survival of life on earth as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."

Paul McCartney explains, "If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty."

The above statistics are just a very few of the MANY that prove that the Bible, Einstein and Paul McCartney are right. Not only that, it also makes you feel better (and Ben Franklin below said it helps you study better too):

← "Since I've gone vegetarian, my body has never felt better and my taste buds have been opened up to a whole new world. It's one of the most rewarding choices I've ever made and I invite you to join me in living a healthy, cruelty-free lifestyle." Alicia Silverstone

← "It must be vegetarian. I don't want any meat put in front of me."(Brad Pitt in Celebrity Living Weekly

Some other famous vegetarians include: Einstein, Jane Goodall, Demi Moore, Rosa Parks, Steve Jobs, Socrates, Thomas Edison, Carl Lewis, David Duchovny (Mulder on X-files), Clint Eastwood, Kate Winslet, Oliver Stone, Plato, Claudia Schiffer, Brad Pitt, Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci, Orlando Bloom, Lisa Kudrow, Paul McCartney, Confucius, Paul Newman, Mulder (from X-files), Avril Lavigne Christie Brinkley, Charlize Theron, Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman, Gillian Anderson, Heather Mills, Alicia Silverstone, Brooke Shields, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Chris Martin (from the band Coldplay), Pierce Brosnan, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Redford, Shakira, B.B. King, Tobey Maguire, Ian McKellan, Johnny Cash, Joss Stone, Meatloaf, Michael Jackson, Nikola Tesla, the Dalai Lama, Roger Moore (James Bond Actor), Bryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, William Shatner, Vanna White, Aristotle, Jessica Biel (probably) and many more. VIDEO: Olympian Carl Lewis on being vegan at:

Another thing meat eating affects is sexual satisfaction. In the movie “Super Size me”, Morgan Spurlock eats at McDonalds for a month straight including lots of meat, instead of being vegetarian. Alexandra Jamieson, his wife, reported this about their sex life:

It’s hard for me to watch him go through this. I worry about his health. He’s exhausted by the end of the day…just so tired. Gets home really late from work. He gets all jacked up on sugar and caffeine and he crashes. Then when we do have sex, I gotta tell you, he’s not quite as energetic as he used to be…I mean it’s still good, but it’s like definitely a big difference. There’s definitely a big difference. I can tell.

It’s not just the Bible that advises people to be vegetarian. Here are some other great thinkers and religions who said the same:

• BUDDHISM: "Meat is not agreeable to the wise: it has a nauseating odor, it causes a bad reputation, it is food for the carnivorous; I say this, Mahamati, it is not to be eaten." Buddha

• "One is not a great one because one defeats or harms other living beings. One is so called because one refrains from defeating or harming other living beings."~ The Buddha, Dhammapada, Ch. 19 (15/270), Max Muller, Trans.

• HINDUISM: The Manu-samhita, the ancient Indian code of law, states, "Having well considered the disgusting origin of flesh and the cruelty of fettering and slaying of corporeal beings, let him entirely abstain from eating flesh."

• HINDUISM: "I do feel that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants." - Ghandi

• ATHEISM: “While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered beasts, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth?” “Animals are my friends...and I don't eat my friends.” George Bernard Shaw

• ISLAM: “There is not an animal that lives on the Earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but forms part of communities like you…Whoever is kind to the creatures of God, is kind to himself.” --The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), narrated by Abdallah bin `Amru, in Bukhari and Muslim collections.

• DEISM: "When about 16 Years of Age, I happen'd to meet with a Book written by one Tryon, recommending a Vegetable Diet. I determined to go into it…{I} propos'd to my Brother, that if he would give me weekly half the money he paid for my board, I would board my self. He instantly agreed to it, and I presently found that I could save half what he paid me…I made the greater Progress from that greater Clearness of Head & quicker Apprehension which usually attend Temperance in Eating & Drinking.” Benjamin Franklin, from part one of his autobiography.

OTHER FAMOUS PEOPLE AND PHILOSOPHERS ON BEING VEGETARIAN

• Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds theirs. We live by the death of others: we are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look on the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.~ Leonardo da Vinci (Renaissance painter, architect, engineer, mathematician and philosopher, 1452 - 1519)

• "If chimpanzees have consciousness, if they are capable of abstractions, do they not have what until now has been described as 'human rights'? How smart does a chimp have to be before killing him constitutes murder?" Carl Sagan

• "As long as there are slaughter houses, there will be battle fields." Leo Tolstoy

• "You have just dined, and however scrupulously the slaughterhouse is concealed in the graceful distance of miles, there is complicity." Ralph Waldo Emerson, Fate

• "Vegetarianism serves as the criterion by which we know that the pursuit of moral perfection on the part of humanity is genuine and sincere." Leo Tolstoy

• Until he extends his circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace. ~ Albert Schweitzer (Nobel Prize-winning physician, missionary and statesman, 1875 - 1965)

• "The average age (longevity) of a meat eater is 63. I am on the verge of 85 and still work as hard as ever. I have lived quite long enough and am trying to die; but I simply cannot do it. A single beef-steak would finish me; but I cannot bring myself to swallow it. I am oppressed with a dread of living forever. That is the only disadvantage of vegetarianism." George Bernard Shaw

• "Since visiting the abattoirs [slaughterhouses] of South France, I have stopped eating meat."Vincent Van Gogh

• "If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who deal likewise with their fellow men." St.Francis of Assisi (1181-1226)

• "A vegetarian diet is the acid test of humanitarianism."Leo Tolstoy

• "It may indeed be doubted whether butchers' meat is anywhere a necessary of life. Grain and other vegetables, with the help of milk, cheese, and butter, or oil, where butter is not to be had, afford the most plentiful, the most wholesome, the most nourishing, and the most invigorating diet. Decency nowhere requires that any man should eat butchers' meat." Adam Smith

• "Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages." Thomas Edison

• "We stopped eating meat many years ago. During the course of a Sunday lunch, we happened to look out of the kitchen window at our young lambs playing happily in the fields. Glancing down at our plates, we suddenly realised we were eating the leg of an animal who had until recently been playing in a field herself. We looked at each other and said "Wait a minute, we love these sheep - they're such gentle creatures. So why are we eating them?" It was the last time we ever did." PAUL and LINDA McCARTNEY

• "Those who eat flesh are but eating grains and vegetables at second hand; for the animal receives from these things the nutrition that produces growth. The life that was in the grains and the vegetables passes into the eater. We receive it by eating the flesh of the animal. How much better to get it direct by eating the food that God provided for our use!" Ellen White, co-founder Seventh Day Adventists, 1905

• "I am in favor of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being."Abraham Lincoln

6. GET 7-8 HOURS OF SLEEP: Sleep is far more important than people realize. It affects at least these areas:

1. CREATIVITY/MEMORY/DECISIONS: Scientists at a university in Germany found that people with 8 hours of sleep were 3 times more likely than sleep-deprived participants to figure out a hidden rule for converting the numbers into the right answers (Nature, January 2004).

2. WEIGHT: Researchers from Universite’ Laval’s Faculty of Medicine in Quebec City, Canada, studied the habits of 422 grade-school students. They found that the risk of becoming overweight is 3.5 times higher for children who get less than 10 hours of sleep nightly than for those who get 12 or more hours.

3. SAFETY & PERFORMANCE: Sleep expert, Colonel Gregory Belenky, has done research showing that sleep affects safety and performance. His research shows that lack of sleep decreases the entire brain's ability to function — most significantly impairing the areas of the brain responsible for attention, complex planning, complex mental operations, and judgment.

4. HEALTH: If we don’t sleep enough, our body can’ t fight sicknesses and diseases so well (especially if we eat sugary foods too)

5. EMOTIONS: If you don’t get enough sleep, it can really make you feel down in the dumps sometimes.

So, make sure to get your sleep! Researchers say that the hours before midnight are double the value of those after midnight. So, sleeping from 9-11pm gives you the same benefit as sleeping from 1am-5am. So, whenever possible get sleep before midnight.

7. AVOID SEAFOOD—Seafood is especially dangerous for pregnant mothers

There are 2 major problems with seafood that you need to understand.

1. Women, when you get pregnant and are raising your children in the future, I especially plead with you to stop eating seafood and meat as well as to stop drinking alcohol and milk. Pregnancy and childhood are very critical times for the health of your child. These days, seafood is very polluted with many dangerous chemicals that can harm your baby’s brain. Eating seafood, meat, alcohol and milk greatly increases the risk of more sicknesses and diseases and even mental disease. Here are the facts:

PREGANCY/CHILDHOOD DANGER:

According to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine by Dr. Joseph and Sandra Jacobsen, 11 year old children with high exposures to PCBs before birth were 3 times more likely to have low IQs and twice as likely to have delayed reading ability. Where do high PCB levels often come from? Dr. Kenneth Rosenman of Michigan State University said, “The major ongoing source of PCB exposure for the general population is the consumption of fish.”

“Fish are repositories for the industrial and municipal wastes and the agricultural chemicals flushed into the world’s waters”, says Richard Schwartz, Ph.D. “Mercury, especially high in tuna and swordfish, can cause brain damage, especially in growing children. PCBs, dioxin, and pesticides (such as DDT) have been linked to cancers, nervous system disorders, fetal damage, and many other health problems. Removing fish from your meals eliminates half of all mercury exposure and reduces one’s intake of other toxins.”

2. Maine, Michigan and other states warn pregnant women to avoid fish or to eat a maximum of 6 large fish or 22 small fish per year because 90% of even fresh water fish have unsafe PCB and chemical levels. Large fish are far more dangerous than small fish because they have up to 1,000,000 times more pollution than the water. In 1 site, the lake water had .02 ppm (parts per million) of DDD. The plants/phytoplankton had 5 ppm. The vegetarian fish had 40-300 ppm. The large fish had up to 2,500 ppm.

According to Dr. Steve Patch, co-director of the Environmental Quality Institute, University of North Carolina-Asheville, “We saw a direct relationship between people’s mercury levels and the amount of… fish people consumed”.

3. The media and some scientists often say that it’s important to eat fish because the Omega 3 in fish reduces heart problems and is good for your brain. But, this is not totally accurate. As you see in the chart here, you can get Omega 3 from many vegetarian sources.

In addition to this, there are misleading reports about the benefits of fish. A Dr. Richardson heard these reports about fish being healthy and so started eating some fish every week. Her cholesterol suddenly went up 50 points. She couldn’t understand it. Finally, she realized that all the news reports were comparing meat eaters to fish eaters. They didn’t even consider vegetarians. For her, the change to eating fish from being a vegetarian was much worse for her health.

Researchers did experiments to see whether giving fish to people would prevent 2nd heart attacks.

STUDY #1: DART Trial—Men who ate 400g of oily fish per week had 30% fewer deaths over 2 years.

STUDY #2: GISSI Trial—People ate 100g of oily fish per DAY and had a 20% reduction in mortality.

STUDY #3: LYON Trial—People ate vegetables and fruit with high omega 3 fatty acids. They had a 70% reduction in deaths. This advantage continued even 4 years later.

So, the truth is that if you are eating meat, changing to fish is healthier. But, if you are a vegetarian, changing to eat fish is more dangerous for your health.

Again the Bible gave us wisdom that can help us avoid these problems if we follow it. The Bible’s ideal diet has no seafood in it. But, if you really have to eat seafood, God gave guidelines to help us avoid the worst problems in seafood.

As for marine animals, you may eat whatever has both fins and scales. You may not, however, eat marine animals that do not have both fins and scales.” Deuteronomy 14:9-10

8. AVOID/REDUCE MILK: There are so many commercials about drinking milk and how it “Does a body good”. Unfortunately, these are propaganda. In the countries where people drink lots of milk, there are very high rates of osteoperosis and many other problems with bones. Milk is a factor in breast cancer, heart disease and other serious diseases. Milk also causes many common sicknesses (colds, earaches, etc.) in children.

"Milk allergies and sicknesses are very common in children... They are the leading cause of the chronic ear infections that plague up to 40% of all children under the age of six." Julian Whitaker, M.D., "Health & Healing," October, 1998, Volume 8, No. 10

"I would call milk perhaps the most  unhealthful vehicle for calcium that one could possibly imagine, which is  the only thing people really drink it for, but whenever you challenge  existing dogma...people are resistant." Neal Barnard, M.D. President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

Common, a hip-hop musician, wrote this about his experience in cutting out milk from his diet:

I think and speak clearer since I cut the dairy out. I can breathe better and perform at a better rate, and my voice is clearer. I can explore different things with my voice that I couldn't do because of my meat and dairy ingestion. I am proud and blessed to be a vegetarian, everything became clear.

A mother wrote these things about her experience with giving up milk (and other things)

Six years ago I developed a strong desire to ensure that my family was receiving the best nutrition possible. I realized that what most people think of as 'healthy' was actually harmful to the body. I prayed that God would bring others into my life that had the same desire, and He lovingly and quickly answered my prayer. How wonderful it has been. Six years ago, our third son was having continual ear infections and had been on antibiotics for months. All three boys had suffered ear infections, colds, constant runny noses, etc. After changing our diet [to the Hallelujah Diet which eliminates meat, milk, sugar and white flour and encourages a diet of mostlyfresh fruits, vegetables and nuts], all ailments quickly disappeared. We have had two more sons since that time, and I am happy to say that they have never had ear infections and have rarely ever been sick. What a blessing this lifestyle change has been. It is also wonderful to see the boys (ages 2-10 years) encouraging other children and even adults to eat healthy. Thank you for your ministry and God bless you!"  from testimonies at Hallelujah Acres,

There are numerous other science facts and testimonies at:

9. REDUCE SUGAR CONSUMPTION

Sugar is also a major problem. It is linked to many sicknesses as well as many cancers and diseases. If you eat 6 teaspoons of sugar, your bacteria can only kill 10 bacteria instead of 14. If you eat 12 teaspoons, it reduces to 5 bacteria…and so on. A diet high in sugar is connected with at least 8 different kinds of cancer.

In addition, researchers have done tests on students many times and shown that sugar reduces your thinking ability. In one test, 46 boys were tested. The boys on a low sugar diet scored ~10% higher on tests than their peers who had a high sugar diet. Dr. Nedley states in his book, “Large amounts of sugar in the diet have been demonstrated to impair frontal lobe functions in school age children.” from the book “Proof Positive” (chart).

10. RELIGION/PURPOSEFUL LIFE:

Many of the principles above were first written about in the Bible. Why did God give us these principles 3-6,000 years ago? God tells us right here:

"Listen well to the voice of the Lord your God. Do what is right in His eyes. Listen to what He tells you, and obey all His Laws. If you do this, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have put on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you." Genesis 15:26

God didn’t want us to get the diseases that other people get. He wanted us to be healthy and to have a good life. Now from science we know from that these principles from God are very important for our modern lives.

Many health benefits in the Bible are very scientific and easy to understand now how they make us healthier. Science has learned a lot. Studies now show that people with faith in God live ~3-7 years longer on average that other people. They have less stress, have lower rates of heart attacks, lower blood pressure, go to hospitals less, recover from surgery faster and save more money, etc. But, scientists are now also discovering that just prayer and faith in God are also very helpful in improving a person’s mental health. Here’s what one scientist wrote:

‘Prayer is a powerful and effectual worry remover. Men and women who have learned to pray with childlike sincerity, literally talking to and communing with the Heavenly Father, are in possession of a great secret whereby they can cast their care upon God, knowing that He cares for us. A clear conscience is a great step towards barricading the mind against neuroticism.’ -Dr William Sadler, Practice of Psychiatry

The Bible has much truth about health in it as we’ve seen. But, these are some other reasons why religion may be good for our health:

Another scientist named Dan Buetner is doing research on blue zones—places where people more often live to be 100 years old. He also found that one important factor in long and healthy living is faith in God. You can see many interesting articles and videos on this at (the media section). But, here’s a Venn diagram that shows faith and other common factors they found in people who live in 3 blue zones (the Loma Linda location is mostly Seventh Day Adventist):

Here’s one more testimony of the benefits of good health from my own relatives. Again remember that good health comes over 75% from our individual lifestyle choices. My grandpa, Lester Trubey, recently turned 100 years old (a recent picture is at the right). He is very lively, funny and outgoing. He loves to tell stories and enjoys life very much. He was playing basketball and bailing hay into his 80s. At Christmas 2008, I asked him what helped him live so long. He answered that there were 3 things:

1) God’s blessings of many kinds.

2) Being vegetarian (as well as not smoking, no drinking, exercise, good body weight and all the 10 habits listed above).

3) A wonderful wife who didn’t nag much and was always loving, diligent and encouraging even through difficult times.

My grandma was also quite healthy, but she was somewhat chubby and didn’t exercise lot. She died in her late 80s since her health habits weren’t quite as good as my grandpa’s. Here is a photo of some other relatives. You can see that the relatives on the right half (including my parents on the far right who are in their 60s) are quite healthy. Those on the left half are much less healthy. The difference is almost totally in lifestyle. The people on the right side follow all 10 of the health habits above quite well. The ones on the left follow some of the health habits, but don’t get enough exercise, don’t eat enough fresh fruit and vegetables, and other things. You can see the difference in the picture and as a consequence of this, the far left couple is frequently going to the hospital and spending more than $200 every month on hospital fees and medicines. My aunts on the left are both great cooks and very interesting people and I love them very much. But they are not so careful about eating healthy food. My aunt on the far left is in her 70s now and uses a wheel chair to get around to most places. She often e-mails us about her health troubles. These are typical examples of what happens to her every few weeks:

• Last Thursday morning we went to two doctors for Ken. By the time we got out, I was getting terrible cramps, and by the time we got home I was really sick and was sick all night with diarrhea and only got about an hour's sleep…Anyway, Friday night I was still not feeling very well and couldn't sleep only about two hours.  ---

• We had an appointment with Dr. Linda Foster Friday since Ken's lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides) have sky rocketed and their office called and said he had to come in for a special appointment to go over his blood tests, butwe got a message that they had to change his appointment to this Thursday, so guess that's good since maybe he'll be able to walk better by the time we go in.

• This time my lipids are fine so I'm very happy - I started taking our doctor's special kind of Omega-3 oil three months ago and all my lipids went way down where they should be and it's a first time my triglycerides have been where they should be for a long time.  Guess Ken will have to start on her Omega-3 oil too - they cost about $50 a month so that means we will have to be paying $100 a month for both of us!  Of course that is in addition to our prescription meds, so we pay through the nose just to keep our lipids down!

• Last Monday we went to River Park Hospital here in McMinnville and on Tuesday because of Ken's low red blood count, he had a blood transfusion so he could have an angiogram and the nephrologist also ordered a bunch of ultrasounds. Then Wednesday morning he had an angiogram (heart cath) and they found his LAD artery was 90% closed and he has a back branch artery that needed a stent too.

• Don't know if I've written since my oldest son Chuck had a heart event about 10 days ago and ended up having two stents put in at Scripps Hospital.  He said it was the worst pain he'd ever had and he couldn't even get up off the floor in his office and he was only able to call his wife because he had his bluetooth phone in his ear and told her to call an ambulance.

Now ask yourself the question. Which people do you want to end up like when you get older? My grandpa and the people on the right or the people on the left who are very nice people, but have many health problems due to their poor health habits. I think the answer is obvious. But, the choice is obvious too. The choice is yours every day. Every day you are choosing your future. Everyday the health habits you choose determine what you will feel like now, the quality of health you are having now and your future health when you get older. Learn a lesson from these people and decide to follow these 10 good health habits listed in this essay and others that you learn about.

To end, here are some acronyms and websites that can help you remember the important health tips in your daily life and help you get more information on this topic.

NEWSTART

(simplified from: & )

NEWSTART principles have saved the lives of 1000s of people and given the freedom of health to millions. Here is a brief summary:

N: Nutrition: Eating healthy foods can bring great improvements to life and health.

E: Exercising or physical activity for 20-60 minutes a day reduces many health risks, reduces your stress and depressoin, helps you sleep, makes you look better, healthier and more!

W: Water: 6-8 glasses a day is healthy. If your urine is clear (not yellow), then you are drinking enough).

S: Sunshine: Get enough sun. This is good for your skin. But, avoid sunburns.

T: Temperance: Be balanced and use wisdom in all things.

A: Air: Get fresh air often. Open your windows when sleeping and in the classroom.

R: Rest: 6-8 hours of sleep is important for good health. The hours before midnight are double the value of the hours after midnight according to scientists and Ellen White and help improve your attitude and energy.

T: Trust in God. The famous psychiatrist, Dr William Sadler, wrote, “Prayer is a powerful and effectual worry remover. Men and women who have learned to pray with childlike sincerity, literally talking to and communing with the Heavenly Father, are in possession of a great secret whereby they can cast their care upon God, knowing that He cares for us. A clear conscience is a great step towards barricading the mind against neuroticism.”

6 BASIC HEALTH LEVELS

There are ~6 basic health lifestyles that you can follow. It will take time to learn to cook in new ways and we should enjoy the food that we eat, so change as you learn to cook in new ways. But, there are many benefits to improving your health lifestyle and you don’t have to give up eating delicious foods when you change your diet. It may take 3-6 months to get used to the changes, but your body will thank you and after a year or so, you may even feel disgusted by your previous diet. But, here are the levels of healthy living. The lowest are worst. The top 3 levels will add ~10 or more years to your life and greatly reduce your risk for many diseases:

1) RAW DIET: Eat a majority (~65% or more) of your food raw and uncooked. You can soak many things to soften them up. Research is piling up that this is extremely beneficial to our bodies and produces an energy explosion as well as enabling your body to fight off many diseases and in some cases to conquer diseases like cancer that most people think are incurable.

2) VEGAN: Vegans are vegetarians, but they eat no meat, no milk, no eggs and no cheese. This is significantly better for your health than just being vegetarian since you cut out all connections to the diseases of animals.

3) VEGETARIAN: Vegetarians don’t eat meat or seafood. This helps them avoid many diseases associated with animal fat and blood.

4) NO RED MEAT: In this diet, people don’t eat red meat. They eat more vegetables/fruit, and some seafood and chicken. This diet reduces the cholesterol and animal protein which cause heart disease and many other problems connected to animal fat.

5) CLEAN MEAT: This is the lowest level accepted in the Bible where people are allowed to eat clean meats (cow, deer, sheep, chicken, fish with fins/scales, etc). It is better than the pig diet for sure, but is not at all the best.

6) ANYTHING (the pig diet): This is the diet where you eat anything you want with no restrictions.

CONCLUSION

There is a lot of information above and it will be difficult to remember. To make it easy to remember, use the BEST principle:

1) BE NATURAL: Play sports, get fresh air, water and sunlight everyday, do exercise, rest, etc. in ways that are natural and like country people in nature would do.

2) EAT A RAINBOW OF VEGETARIAN FOOD: Eat mostly or all fruits and vegetables and get a good variety…the 7 colors of the rainbow everyday if possible.

3) SPIRITUALITY AND FRIENDLINESS IS IMPORTANT: Spirituality and a spirit of friendliness and forgiveness significantly improves health.

4) TEMPERANCE IS IMPORTANT: Don’t do too much or too little of anything. Do it in moderation.

The best of health to you always! If you follow these 10 principles of health, you yourself may end up living to 100. But, for sure you’ll live a much longer, happier and enjoyable life as God intended!

Then when we do have sex, I gotta tell you, he’s not quite as energetic as he used to be. I have to be on top, otherwise, you know…he gets tired easily. I think the saturated fats are starting to impede the blood flow to his penis. He’s having a hard time getting it up. I mean it’s still good, but it’s like definitely a big difference. There’s definitely a big difference. I can tell.

"I'm 23 now, and I've grown into this woman. I feel sexy and more mature. I wanted these inside changes to be reflected in both my look and music. I am a vegan now, and it was a conscious decision. I studied a lot about African culture and health and the best way to take care of the body. I really wanted to be healthy. At first I was just trying to challenge myself; I thought it was a phase and that I would grow out of it, but it wasn't. I found out a lot about the body and what [hormones] they put in meat. My taste buds started changing, and I didn't crave [meat and dairy products] anymore." ()

Playwright George Bernard Shaw first tried to become a vegetarian at age 25. Shaw's doctors warned him that the diet would kill him. When he was old and in good health, he was asked why he didn't go back and show them what good vegetarianism had done him. He replied, "I would, but they all passed away years ago."
