Instructions for Hebrew names

The Hebrew name includes:

• First name (and middle name if they feel it is important to use it)

• ben (son of) or bat ( daughter of)

• father’s Hebrew name

• v’ (meaning “and”) with no space after it

• mother’s Hebrew name

Examples:

Miriam bat David v’Golda

Yosef ben Shmuel v’Sara.

Individuals are called up by their Hebrew names for only the:

aliyah (reciting the Torah blessings),

hagbah (lifting the Torah)

gelilah (dressing the Torah)

These are the honors in the Torah service.

Hebrew names are not used for Torah readers (since this is not an honor, but a function of the service.)
