4-H Summer Fun is a special program of NC Cooperative Extension, Vance County 4-H

program. The program will run June-July with exciting, educational and fun opportunities

for youth grades K-12.

1. Participation requires completion of a 4-H enrollment packet. You do not have to be a 4-H

club member to participate.

2. 4-H age is considered to be the age as of January 1, 2013 (except for overnight camp).

3. Registration is on a FIRST PAID -FIRST RESERVED basis. Youth will NOT be placed in

classes until completed forms are received. Registrations may not be made by phone or mail.

4. Come by the Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, 305 Young Street, Henderson

to register between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Plan to spend 20-30 minutes filling out forms. Bring

your driver's license and complete insurance information including policy number,

company address and telephone. 4-H secretary provides free notary service. For your

convenience, forms are available online at vance.ces.ncsu.edu (click on 4-H & Youth).

Download and bring completed forms to be notarized to save time.

5. Registration will be open to any Vance County youth ages 5-18 effective immediately.

DEADLINE: 1 week prior to each event.

6. An annual registration fee of $2 per participant is required in addition to the class fee.

Payment is required at registration and can be paid with cash/check payable to

"Cooperative Extension 4-H".

7. Refunds will not be given unless a class is cancelled. If your child cannot attend, you may

call the office and see if anyone is on the waiting list with whom you could transfer

enrollment and exchange money.

8. Unless otherwise stated classes will meet at the Vance County Cooperative Extension

Office and youth should wear clothing that is comfortable for lots of movement and can

get dirty! Snacks and water will be provided for all programs.

July 2nd 3-2-1 BLAST OFF!

Tuesday Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Administrative Building, 122 Young St.

morning Ages: 8-14 years Limit: 10 Cost: Free

Description: Build and launch your own model rocket, while learning 4-H Rocketry skills.

Snacks will be provided.

***PLEASE BRING A BAG LUCH IF SIGNING UP FOR BOTH CLASSES***

July 2nd POSITIVELY ELECTRIFYING

Tuesday Time: 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building (4-H office)

afternoon Ages: 8-14 years Limit: 10 Cost: Free

Description: Each participant will learn the basic principles of electricity and complete an

electric project to take home. Snacks will be provided.

July 3rd MANNERS MATTER I

Wednesday Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building (4-H office)

Ages: 5-8 years Limit: 10 Cost: Free

Description: Participants will learn the importance of good behavior by practicing good table

manners, respect for others, proper phone etiquette, and sportsmanship. Snacks will be provided.

July 4th HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!

July 5th GOT MILK?

Friday Time: 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building

Ages: 7-14 years Limit: 10 Cost: Free

Description: Explore the world of dairy farms and dairy products. Youth will learn nutritional

facts and visit a local dairy goat farm. Participants must war closed toe shoes and bring a bag

lunch. Snacks are provided.

July 8th FISHING II

Monday Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Location: To be announced

Ages: 8-14 years Limit: 10 Cost: $6

Description: Learn basic fishing skills, fishing safety, and fish identification. Fishing rods and

bait provided. Water and snack provided. Wear hat, sunscreen, and close-

toed shoes.

July 9th-11th BEGINNING GUITAR I

Tue-Thur Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Location: Hill’s Music Store on Hwy. 158 Bypass

Ages: 6-9 years Limit: 10 Cost: $18

Description: For beginning learners. Guitars are supplied for class; fee is for music books only.

July 9th-11th BEGINNING GUITAR II

Tue-Thur Time: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Location: Hill’s Music Store on Hwy. 158 Bypass

July 15 th WILDLIFE EXPLORATION - Cloverbuds

Monday Time: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Location: Shelter 2, Satterwhite Point, Kerr Lake

Ages: 5-8 years Limit: 15 Cost: Free

Description: Kerr Lake Rangers will help youth gain an appreciation for

their environment and the animals of Kerr Lake, while learning how to be

safe outdoors. Participants must bring a bag lunch.

***Parents should arrange drop-off and pick up. Tell the gatekeeper you are dropping off for a ranger program.

July 16th-18th NCWRC HUNTER SAFETY CERTIFICATION CLASS

Tue-Thur Time: 9:00-12:30 Location: Vance County Office Building (4-H office)

Ages: 12-18, male/female Limit: 20 Cost: Free to the first 20.

Instructor: Carl R. Rohr, NCWRC Certified Hunter Education Instructor

Description: Must attend all three classes.  This minimum 10-hour course is required for all

first-time hunting license buyers in North Carolina. Certification is accepted in every state and

province in North America. Learn orienteering, trapping, pistols and

more.  Midmorning snack included. Courses are provided free of charge in all 100 counties throughout the year.Pre-registration is required for courses. Students must bring a pen or pencil to class.

Following completion of the course requirements a certification card will be sent, typically within 14 days. Pertinent information is recorded into the agency database upon completion.

July 19th WILD & WACKY WORLD OF SCIENCE

Friday Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building

Ages: 5-14 years Limit: 15 Cost: Free

Description: Learn about science through fun, hands-on experiments, crafts, and recipes.

Snacks will be provided.

July 22nd WILDLIFE EXPLORATION II

Monday Time: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Location: Community Building, Satterwhite Point, Kerr Lake

Ages: 9-14 years Limit: 15 Cost: Free

Description: Kerr Lake Rangers will assist youth in four areas of learning (1) Sun and water

safety (2) Wildflowers, reptiles and animals native to our area (3) Wildlife habitats (4) How to

protect the environment. Participants must bring a bag lunch.

July 24th DOWN ON THE FARM

Wednesday Time: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building (4-H office)

Ages: 5-18 years Limit: 15 Cost: Free

Description: Youth will learn how various farms are a direct part of their everyday lives.

Participants will visit stations on two local farms about growing fruits and vegetables, raising

livestock, solar energy, making honey, and much, much more. A pork barbecue lunch will be

provided.

July 25th JUST CLOWNING AROUND

Thursday Time: 1:00 -4:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building (4-H office)

Ages: 5-18 years Limit: 12 Cost: Free

Description: Want to be a clown for a day? Join us for make-up, balloons, magic, and more.

Snacks will be provided.

July 26th FLEECE & FUN 4-H STYLE

Friday Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building (4-H office)

Description: Travel to a local farm to learn about llamas, sheep, and the products they provide.

Youth observe wool shearing, hand spinning, and take home a craft made from llama or sheep’s

wool. Snacks will be provided.

July 26 Be EGGsceptional

afternoon Time: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Location: Vance County Office

Ages: 8-14 years Limit: 12 Cost: Free

Description: Gain a better understanding of the food you eat by exploring your “egg

knowledge” and various aspects of Poultry Science. Snacks will be provided.

July 29- EFNEP Kids In the Kitchen Snack Class

Aug. 1 Time: 9 a.m.-Noon Location: 4-H Office

(Mon- Ages: 7-9 years Limit: 10 Cost: $15

Thur) Instructor: Arnetta Wilson, Expanded Foods and Nutrition Education Program

Description: Learn to make healthy snacks and have fun in the kitchen.

July 29- EFNEP Kids in the Kitchen Cooking Class

Aug. 1 Time: 2 – 5 p.m Location: 4-H Office

(Mon- Ages: 10-13 years Limit: 10 Cost: $25

Thur) Instructor: Arnetta Wilson, Expanded Foods and Nutrition Education Program

Description: Learn to cook healthy meals for your family.
