Some are caused directly by meteorological conditions; in others, weather can adversely affect the health and safety of those involved in response and recovery activities. The MetEd website (meted.ucar.edu) provides free, online materials (some of which are in the EMI Independent Study Catalog) that can help teach students about the importance of considering weather events in preparedness and response efforts. This website is produced by the COMET Program?, a not-for-profit program funded primarily by the National Weather Service. Three online modules have been designed specifically for emergency managers and are available through the EMI Independent Study Catalog:Anticipating Hazardous Weather Community Hurricane Preparedness Community Tsunami Preparedness In addition, numerous other modules designed for other audiences could be useful to emergency management students. Included in these are such varied topics as:Weather and HealthDams & Dam FailureFire BehaviorDispersion BasicsTo see the range of modules available, go to meted.ucar.edu, click the “Education & Training” tab, and then choose “Emergency Management” in the Topics selection box. To view a particular module, users need to register in the MetEd system (registration is free). Students who use the modules can also take associated quizzes, and the registration system will keep track of their results. Students can share their quiz scores with an instructor, either automatically or on an individual module basis. If you’re going to the EMI Higher Education Conference, pick up a handout in Room S125. This FEMA in Higher Education funded project was designed with that divide in mind. Our goal is to develop a textbook for use in advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate courses that will focus the attention of academic/practitioner teams on critical contemporary issues related to disasters. For each issue, academics and practitioners will be selected to describe what we “know.” Researchers will be asked to focus on the scientific findings and practitioners will be asked to discuss patterns and variation in national policies/state of practice. The focus of the project will be on facilitating an exchange of ideas between these communities and developing a vision for how their insights could be brought together to make emergency management systems better.RequestWe are currently searching for individuals and/or practitioner/academic teams that are interested in contributing to this textbook for a number of pre-identified topic areas. We are currently looking for authors to address the following issues (in no particular order):Vulnerability Resilience Integration of Persons with Access and Functional NeedsInequity and Emergency ManagementEvaluating and Acting on RisksMitigation Measures Individual Preparedness Insights on the Whole Community ApproachPrivate Sector IntegrationThe Creation and Maintenance of Plans and PoliciesPlanning and Improvisation During Disasters Reflections on NIMS Volunteers and Non-ProfitsAlert, Warning, and Notification SystemsMediaSocial MediaAfter Action, Exercises, and EvaluationLong-term RecoveryEmergency Management as a ProfessionStrategic vs. Tactical Emergency ManagementNeglected Issues in Emergency ManagementYou will note that this list reflects a diverse set of topics. As such, we welcome suggestions from interested authors on how they would approach writing about these areas. We are also open to contributors proposing topics they believe would fit in such a pensationEach contributor will receive a $500 honorarium for their efforts.Interested in contributing?Send an e-mail to either of the volume editors: Dr. Joseph E. Trainor, PhD jtrainor@udel.edu or to Tony Subbio, CEM, MS, Tony.Subbio@ for additional details. We will respond to questions from interested contributors on a rolling basis, but we expect to select all participants by the end of July 2012. There is currently a lack of a dedicated journal serving those with a direct interest in all disciplines of search and rescue.Launching this electronic journal on the Internet offers a relatively cost-effective means of providing this medium, and one which offers the potential for the prompt publication of articles and the dissemination of information to those with an interest in this topic. JSAR will provide a forum for the publication of original research, reviews and commentaries which will consolidate and expand the theoretical and professional basis of the area. JSAR is interested in strategic, tactical, operational and technical matters, across all disciplines including: Wilderness SARRope RescueCave RescueIce RescueDive Rescue Extrication USAR Trench Collapse Canine Search Air Rescue Mines RescueMarine RescueSwiftwater Rescue Animal RescueAnd more…JSAR is now calling or submissions.
