The American Revolution and Declaration of Independence

United States (60% of the test)

I. American Revolution

A. Events leading up to the Revolution

1. Royal Proclamation of 1763

a. After the French and Indian Wars, Britain created a boundary line between

the 13 colonies and Native American lands west of the Appalachian

Mountains. Colonists were not to cross this line for settlement.

b. Britain was to be in charge of all land purchases from Native American tribes.

They did not want the colonists to be able to buy land on their own.

2. Taxation without representation

a. The Sugar Act of 1764 taxed molasses in order to raise money for Britain.

b. The Stamp Act of 1765 taxed legal documents and newspapers.

c. The Townshend Acts of 1767 taxed glass, paper, paint, and tea.

d. The colonists were unable to vote for or against these taxes.

e. As these taxes started to affect more and more colonists, the colonists began

to join together against British rules.

3. Boston Massacre (called Incident on King Street by British)

a. In March of 1770, a crowd of people at a customs house (tax collection house)

became unruly.

b. British troops panicked and fired into the crowd, killing three civilians.

c. John Adams believed in fair trials, so he defended the soldiers.

d. Six soldiers were acquitted and two charged with minor offenses.

4. Refusal by colonists to buy British goods

a. Liberty Tea was made from herbs and berries, and they began weaving their

own cloth.

b. This boycott (refusing) of British goods hurt British businesses.

c. The British government sent soldiers and ships to try and enforce the tax laws

and stop the boycotts.

d. The colonists became angrier.

5. Boston Tea Party

a. Colonists had to pay a high tax on tea, a

commodity used by most people.

b. Smugglers brought in Dutch tea that cost less.

c. As prices fell, the British East India Company had

too much tea that they could not sell, which put

them in financial trouble.

d. The 1773 Tea Act let the British East India

Company avoid selling to merchants and sell

directly to colonists. Now colonists could buy tea

at a lower price, but there was still an added tax

on tea.

e. The colonists felt they should only be taxed by their elected representatives,

not Parliament.

f. In November, the Sons of Liberty, dressed as Native Americans and

"unloaded" 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor.

Washington, Gen. George - He was the commander-in-chief of American forces and the first president of the U.S. He is nicknamed the "Father of his Country." He actually lost more battles than he won but was successful because he kept the army intact and he wore down British resolve. He avoided decisive battles and exploited enemy mistakes. He established the idea that civilian-elected officials, rather than military officers, possessed ultimate authority over the military.

Washington, Martha Custis - She was the wife of George Washington.

Wheatley, Phillis - Sold into slavery at the age of seven to John and Susannah Wheatley of Boston, Wheatley later became the first African American female writer published in the U.S. She received a good education, including Latin, Greek, mythology, and history, and mastered English. Washington thanked her for a poem written in his honor. Jefferson, however, was a harsh critic. Christian themes were dominant in her writings.
