Portfolio Paper/Final Exam

The Portfolio Paper/Final Exam consists of two parts:

Part One

Print out copies of all of your portfolio homework assignments and put them in a folder.

The first page of the folder should include your name, the time and day our class meets,

and the email account you use most in case I need to reach you.

Then include the following portfolio homework assignments in the order listed below:

1) “Allegory of the Cave”

2) Categorical Syllogism and Deductive Logic

3) Rhetoric and Dialectic

4) Bacon, Induction & Empiricism

5) Rhetorical Triangle/Communication Triangle

6) Descartes, Locke & Kant

7) High vs. Low Culture

8) Political Advertisements

9) Television Homework

Part Two

Using the portfolio homework as background/support for your essay, write a single-spaced paper no more than two pages long responding to one of the following prompts:

1) Discuss how views of truth/knowledge have changed and/or remained the same over time.

2) Discuss the connection between persuasion and knowledge/truth.

3) Discuss high and low culture in regards to truth and knowledge.

4) Discuss how the “Rhetorical Triangle” and “Communication Triangle” reflect how audiences are persuaded in the “Political Advertisements” homework and in consumer advertising today.

5) Discuss the ways truth/knowledge are established in our culture today as well as how persuasion is used in our culture to obstruct truth/knowledge.

6) Write your own “Allegory of the Cave” for today. Discuss how your allegory is similar to and differs from Plato’s.

NOTES: You are not restricted to the portfolio homework for support and background (you can add your own ideas), but no other research is required. Documentation is not required for the paper.
